Older aged females to be excluded/replaced by younger clones?

posted06/14/2014 12:11 AM (UTC)byDarkKard4in all the timeskips i've witnessed in fighting games, is that female fighters are more likely to be replaced if the timeskip makes their age around 40 or 50.
Tekken is good example of this as every girl who wasn't Nina or Anna (who stayed the same age through a loophole) were replaced by younger counterparts (Julia, Asuka) in the main games (not counting tekken tag series)
Yet the men characters are allowed to be older and stay in the series (Kazuya, Heihachi, Lee Chaolan, Paul, Law, Baek, Bruce..... basically almost all the males from tekken 2)
I remember Soul Calibur 5 did a time skip too and replaced most of the female cast except the ones who had the ability to stay the same age
I just hope they don't exclude Sonya just cause shes older V_V

I think an older Cage sounds a bit silly imo, I'd much rather have an older Sonya for sure.

Both Tekken and Soul Calibur are made by Namco. Let's hope NRS isn't just as stupid.
Cassie might be the daughter of Sonya and Johnny, but she plays rather differently than the two, with a few hints to her parents though. So Sonya and Johnny could still return with their own respective moves without having Cassie be a clone of them.

Yeah, i hope it doesn't get too much like what happened with Tekken and SC! Can't complain since Cervantes and Ivy were both in SC5 but i bet Taki players, mostly the vets i know had bugs about fighting with a clone of their favs.
I may just be crazy but i see a lot of Johnny and Sonya in Cassie. Big characters being left out for only one game wouldn't kill me though. I've seen worse than this from this particular franchise.

They definitely shouldn't rule out Sonya because of age.
There are SO many other reasons to leave her in the past.

SCV is going to go down as one of the worst sequels in history. I still can't believe Talim isn't in that game. It goes to show she was just underage wank bait from the beginning, and when that quality was gone, she got ditched.

Even more baffling was Zasa, whose main power is literally to just be around. Horrible. SCV is going to go down as one of the worst sequels in history. I still can't believe Talim isn't in that game. But yeah off the top of my head I can't think of any older human female fighting game characters. Chiyo from Naruto is really the ONLY one I can think of and considering they like to sex Sonya up I can't imagine they'd have a female character pushing her mid 40s.
That said since the story kicks around the better part of 25 years maybe in the first 10 or so Sonya will make an appearance and that will be where they draw her playable build from. Hypothetically of course.

Risk of clones ?
Minimal !

well Frost and Kira (though they're both clones) are also in category of aging female veterans in MK as they're earthrealmer's too.
but the main person i'm worried about is Sonya since shes a huge veteran... a character who was in the original MK I just know that older aged females are not welcomed in fighting games (as you can't sexualize them) and are almost always replaced by younger counterparts in timeskips.
but since this is an american made game maybe things will be different....

damn... that sucks. wouldn't she be 32 in Soul Caliber V? i guess no one wants a mature looking Talim?
well i do know the the japanese favor those girls who look like they're in high school. You see those types in almost all their fighting games (Ling Xiaoyu, Athena from KoF)

I think its fair to assume that NRS has finally learned from their lame mistakes. The style and direction of this game implies (for now) that that won't really be a problem. Look at Cassie's costume. That could have easily been Sonya's.
The Sonya from just a few years after MK9 wouldn't have changed much so that version could be playable, then the 50-odd year old version could just be in story cutscenes or an alt costume. I get the feeling the roster on the whole will be a roster spanning decades, not existing collectively all at the same time.

You have to remember that the story SPANS at least to the point of 25 years into the future. We could get characters from MK9 that haven't aged too much and they could just be killed in the story at some point before the 25 year mark.

Well age didn't stop Sindel.
Plus Kitana, Mileena, Jade and Tanya age slowly so 25 years is nothing to them, I don't think Sheeva would age either.
We also don't know how Ashrah, Sereena, Nitara or Skarlett age since there not human.
I think it only really leaves Sonya, Kira, Frost and Li Mei, out of those 3 I only see Sonya returning.
The big thing is that the story picks up after MK9 and spans 25 years, it doesnt pick up 25 years after MK9 so Sonya or Cage could be the first few chapters.

hmm true about sindel.
but regarding Li Mei, shes from Outworld (like Bo Rai Cho) which means she ages slowly too. Like the Edenians.

Bo Rai Cho has been around so long he even was a teacher to the Great Kung Lao which is around 500 years ago i think.

Forget that MK is just a game?
In real life yes people age over time...
Even more in a MK where the characters die and are reborn several times.
If death is not a problem in the MK, the age of the characters even less.

I don't know, I see Sonya playable in the past. But I feel like Cassie has that Cage personality because she grew up with Johnny as a single father.

Or Cassie adopted her late father's attitude from watching his old films and was raised and trained by her mother.
I just never want Sonya to be dead. Though the dog tags have me concerned. As far as replacing older female characters with younger ones; its only Sonya who'll be affected by such a thing. I'm doubtful we'll see Kira again (a pity) and Frost is already still seen as a copy of a character so I can't see them doing it yet again. But Sonya, given the series' history of how its portrayed women is probably in danger of being replaced. For now anyway.
I see no reason we couldn't have an older Sonya. We've already got Cassie, plus a lot of young looking non-human gals, so one older woman or two shouldn't be an issue. Sadly, I know that NRS probably wouldn't agree.
And as someone in this thread already said, we could get both Sonya's younger self, and her older one, with one of them as an alt. I do think Shujinko's younger selves in MKD should have been alts too.
A fifty-something Sonya doing cartwheels, and blowing kisses, would be entertaining. If we got both Sonya's younger self, and an older one, I think there should be small gameplay differences, like the older Sonya being a little slower and weaker. Same for any familiar human characters returning as older people.

We will probably see both Sonya and Johnny at the beginning, but shortly after Cassie's birth, they BOTH die and Cassie ends up being raised by Jax.

I could really care less if Sonya and Johnny Cage return, especially since we have someone to carry on both their legacy, story-wise. Who wants to play as the same character, game after game? Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the game's two, true mascots, and always will be because everyone knows who they are, even people unfamiliar with the games. Honestly, one of the only things that made Cage memorable was his nut punch, admit it. Every character from the first MK is iconic because it was the FIRST game, but a lot more interesting characters have come along in the 20 years since, and so will more.
If you love a character that much, let them rest in peace, before they become stale. I feel as if MK2011 was the last big show for a lot of characters before the MK team decided, time to move on, as they should.
