It really seems like this is gonna involve alternate timelines. That would easily explain the "variations of characters".

I just hope they can work it out well enough to where it doesn't turn out to be some goofy sci-fi time traveling thing going back and forth all the time. I would like some actual REAL stories, not just "this happened in this time and then that happened in the other one and this person had to go into that timeline to fix what happened in that one while this other person did this and that in this timeline"

If it's like that they might as well reboot everything all over again because it's just gonna get all out of whack

Glad it's not just MK4 again. Been there, done that. Use the BASIC premise and go in a brand new, original direction. Leave the past behind you.

I get the feeling human Smoke and cyber Smoke will be left existing at the same time at the end of this game's plot just to cater to both sides of the fence.

I think MKX will feature a multiverse.

When the game was being made, the TV show Fringe was all the rage, and that show was all about two parallel universes interacting and colliding together.

Maybe MK9's story writers said, "Oh snap, that's how we'll bring everyone back in the next game." and proceeded to kill half the roster in MK9's universe.

Jarek will be there as a playable character in the main roster. Everyone will be.
On another hand, maybe for some reason, Kano and Sonya will be out this time around for a twist. They both were in MK4.
Meat looked awesome in MKA, hopefully he's in MKX. He would look siiiiiiiick!

That would make sense considering Ed Boon's response. Personally, I still have very low expectations for how the story and characters will be done, but I am also trying to keep an open mind.

I'm in no mood for alternate universes. I just want a decent damn story.

I think it sounds interesting. Sure, it could end up a clusterfuck, but if pulled off, the possibilities could be numerous.

So basically Mortal Kombat X: Days of Future Past?

For some reason I feel like ever since Boon & team went to WB the Higher Ups in WB have been trying to take the MK story & turn it into the DC of fighting games.

Both universes got rebooted in 2011 (MK9 & NEW 52)

Both universe had time traveling aspects were different timelines met another (Note this will only come true if MKX is indeed time travel based)

And now with the idea of MK doing a Multiverse thing if your theory is correct it will remind me of DC again (Yes all comic book universes have Multiverse but no other company is know for there's as much as DC is)

Just my thoughts but I wouldn't be suprised if all this happened.

Wow, totally slipped my mind that they did the multiverse thing with Injustice.

Hmmm...I can't see them so obviously ripping off their own story. Time will tell, I guess.

If I wasn't jaded by the MK9 story mode, this tweet might really rustle my jimmies. At this point though, I just want a solid roster and story that at least acknowledges the existence of the previous continuity.

I've been thinking more about this and thinking they might do a version of Injustice's storyline. Raiden [in place of Batman {expect him as DLC}] will somehow have characters from the original Reality cross over to the new reality like Human Kuai-Liang S-Z [hence his appearance in the trailer], Liu Kang [if the one in the new reality is dead] Kung Lao, Kitana,etc .

So out of desperation do you think Raiden tries to recruit from other MK universes?

What could happen is Shinnok becomes Ruler Supreme of All Reality, as implied Reptile's MK4 ending, and creates a rift in time itself. Of course, I've always felt he and Quan Chi knew about the change in time. Shinnok may use it to his advantage.

Still, it's a repeat of Injustice. Not exactly an original story.

That's what it seems to be pointing towards at the moments. I have to say I'm going to be disappointed to wait 4 years for it and it turns out to be a copy of Injustice.

If characters cross over from one universe to the other, things could change a lot.

And in the grand scheme of things, Raiden just might prevent Armageddon and save the day...in both universes

If my headache that I've had for the last four days would go away, I'd be expressing like a school girl again.

I hated Bioshock: Infinite. Heh.

I'd like for every character to have their own Story-mode. Then we can see how all characters stories turn out instead of having an end bio.
