I really wouldn't be surprised if MK9 is made under someone elses supervision. I really don't think Midway will keep Boon on if MK8 is a flop.

My personal opinion on how MK should turn out is 2 different concepts. 1 Being a 3d graphics/2d play mechanics based around the Mk3 gameplay (kind of like SF4 which has 3d graphics, but 2d game play). MK needs to get back to it's competative style, and I personally don't see any reason why Boon decided to chance the formal so drasically from MK3. Most competative fighting game players loved it, but boon scrapped it because the causal audiance abored it for it's difficulty, and lerning curve.

My other take is to go back to to MK1 even (remake MK1 even if they have too). Just a pure martial arts fighting game (ala tekken, DOA, or SC, even Tao Feng). No style changes, not goofy air combat. Keep the special movies and fatalities though obviously. Thats what peple want. No side mini games modes that detract from putting out a quality competative fighting game.

I'm acutally liking the new concept in SC where you can do special finishing movies, maby MK needs to do that with it's special moves. This way it allows them to focus more heavely on martial arts combat, but with out removing special moves entierly from the game which everyone loves.

I like the idea above about making the game competetive - i think it should use the same style as UMK3 with a run button and sick combos with techniques that leave the mind open to exploration (rather than telling us the juggling techniques just allow the gamers to be creative!)

I am still considering whether i would enjoy it more if it was the fighting layout was like MK4 (3D but not being able to travel all around the map [like sf4]), 1 thing that pissed me off in the previous MK engine was that fuckers like my brother would run around the arena all the time - prolonging the fighting. However i still think they should make it so you can knock people through walls and stuff. Then again i liked the freedom you get in the newer MK games.

The characters definately need tobecome more creative - the new characters don't cut it since mk4 anymore - character development has just gotten sloppy and story lines are becomming lazy. I don't like it when these new characters also appear on the scene randomly and seize the entire scene (just as Kenshi, Taven and his brother and that other guy - i forgot the names because theyre damn awful characters). Characters should earn the right to become top notch. Just as characters such as Kung Lao and Johnny cage (who are still waiting for the oppourtunities).

In terms of appearense - the game would be better with over the top gore (it's what made MK at the end of the day) and personally i love the new look of the MK game, it does look quite dark so far but we can't judge.

To be fair i dont know why we are discussing this at the moment :) MK8 has only just been announced and so far has hardly been seen.

Plus, it seems the pro-crossover contingent are hellbent on insisting we want nothing but blood and guts in our MK games. If that were the case, something like BloodStorm would be the biggest gaming franchise of all time. I think we know better than that, so give us some credit.

All you really have to do is actually read every post and actually realise that the "pro-crossover" people are actually right.

With a list where the majority are the same thing and the whole list can be concluded to one sentence "WE WANT BLOOD AND GORE" and everyone seems to be agreeing with him, i think it's obvious.

"1)dark
2)violent,bloody and gore
3)with fatalities,stage fatalities and deathtraps
4)totally new characters
5)decent Unreal Engine 3 usage
6)good,mature,dark storyline and atmosphere
7)gritty
8)scandalous like GTA or Manunt
9)rated 18+/M or better AO(adults only)
10)as more realistical fighting styles with better mechanics than DA,DECEPTION,ARMAGEDDON"

Only 3 out of 10 points there aren't related to wanting the game to be bloody and gorey.
Considering he wants and AO rated game (which is absolutely ridiculous, did anyone even pay attention to what happened with Manhunt 2?) and bows down to the so-called "realistical" game Thrill Kill (a terrible game might i say and very comical with it's deaths) you can assume the guy is under 18 who got a hard-on from seeing over-the-top gore.
The majority of the forum is agreeing with him and others saying things like:

"In terms of appearense - the game would be better with over the top gore (it's what made MK at the end of the day) "

"make an mk game just like the one they showed us but remove the dc characters and add the fatalities and gore. honestly,i would even be happy if they just added fatalities and gore. "

And you don't see a problem here?
Yeah sure Mortal Kombat was built on the whole fatality and OTT blood and that's why it's one of the biggest fighting franchises but the original games, MK1 - UMK3 were actual good games.
After that everything went downhill, personally i think Boon has done some good, if bringing in batman and taking away the fatalities is what it takes to get rid of all the fans that only care about the blood and gore then i'm all for it.
It's only giving the dev team wrong ideas for what would make the next MK an actual good game.
As i remember reading what someone else wrote on here, Boon and his team do listen to the fans and i think that's his problem.
Sure he gets some good ideas and thats why we had some improvements but they also picked up a lot of terrible ideas from fans.
Which fans?
You take a guess.

Do we have any substantive reason to give tobias so much credit? Even if things went to hell after he left that doesn't necessarily mean he was the reason the games were good in the first place.
There have to be at least two dozen other changes the series went through at that point as well. Moving to 3d, having too many characters to manage, plotlines becoming too complex, etc. Not saying he wan't the reason, just that he might not be,

back on topic, I'd really like to see the series as fast as it used to be. Play UMK3 and then play MK:A and it feels like you were dumped in a vat of molasses.

I am in complete, total agreement with what Lastfighter wrote. The next MK(if possible) should be what he stated. I must add that the "Kreate-a-Kharacter" configuration that was in Armageddon be utilized again -- ONLINE and OFFLINE. NO special guest(s).

He was. When MKII came out, I wanted to BE Tobais. lol. I copied his figure drawing style for a while cause I just loved his creations. So I was all up on the info at the time. Tobais was the guy who designed the mood, the characters, a lot of the special moves, the mythology, and he would come up with the bios as he drew the characters. He certainly did not do it alone. But I can assure you that his absence is the reason MK fans have been dying for the story to straighten and smarten up, because when he was in the story made sense and kept an intrigue that other fighters sorely lack. He left, and Boon is left to pretend he knows how to do the job. Boons been doing a sloppy job for the last three games, and dropping loose end after loose end in the story. So I'm hoping MK vs. DC pulls in horrible numbers (weather it's fun or not), Midway pulls rank and boots Boon, and someone with real passion comes in and does us hardcore fans some service for once... hopefully before I gotta start having my prostate looked at.
I mean, we've put up with too much already. All we want is atmosphere and story. Some of us are a little too hung up on gore, but to me it's always been about story and mood. No one complained when Mortal Kombat the movie didn't have gory fatalities. I think the blood thing is cool and all, but that is not my disappointment with "MK7b". I've been around too long to bitch about gore. And after 16 years of being a fan all I will ask for with MK9 is this:

Midway... Tell us a decent story with the characters whom you're LUCKY we still love!

I did an analyst of "what fans want from MK" before...it's long, and has a couple of my ideas in it....but maybe I'll post it up in here anyway?

Exactly, mood and story is what made MK. Along with a bit of gore.
