In Gamespot's demo you can clearly see that its a parry in Ferra/Torr vs Sub Zero match.

Again, i say it so that its easy for casual players to pull off something flashy. Mr. Ed Boon has said in a lot of interviews that, they want as many people out of 10 to be able to pull off cool looking moves easily.
I do realise that it's still not final and it might change, which I hope changes.

It will be totally awesome if fighters have more than one xray attack, although the chances of that happening seem quite low(imo).

I'd like it better if it resulted in a juggle (since it's a counter), because that damage is minimal for what it is and what we see on-screen, imo.

I don't diss too much since it's (likely) a new Sub-Zero. Shit, his fighting style is dramatically different in general, so all the naysayers should think about that as well.

Like I mentioned, it isn't a counter only X-ray attack.

It isn't a counter only, it's a hybrid.

Holy shit, are you serious? That's awesome! You're screwed if you're not watching out for Sub-Zero then. My favorite character seems to be getting some stellar treatment on the gameplay front.

Reading this puts me at unease. I haven't liked Sub-Zero since MK4. And then came MK9, he's my main. And one of the awesome things to do is comboing into his X-Ray. Reading that it's a counter disappoints me. My friends are not MK players and online netcode stinks. So doing Counters on Cpu who reads your button inputs on higher difficulties....ugh. I hope this gets changed.

Quan Chi's X-ray in MK9 is perhaps the easiest to execute, considering his Trance move.

Sonya's however, has always been difficult for me. She won't stop fucking moving! lol

Learn to combo into it.

I really hope it's an hybrid.

In MK9 you could hold the X-Ray and he would freeze himself, charging on release.

On that game holding it wouldn't do anything if the opponent kicked you, which would interrupt the process, but I hope this time around they changed it so in touch they're frozen and on release he charges like before.

As I said, that video where the barrel throw activates it looks like he lunges, but I'm still not sure if the lunge is just the counter-attack animation when he's hit by the barrel or if the player released the buttons and he just was waiting for the opponent to freeze himself to have a clear shot.

Wahhh, it's too hard! Wahhh!

Just learn how to better use a counter move. Don't give me the excuse of casuals struggling to time it right (is there anything they're good at anyway?). Can't those casuals just learn to be a tiny bit more patient, instead of trying to beat a game ASAP so they can put it on the shelf afterwards? Bloody hell, it's not like they're asked to find the cure to cancer, or the fountain of youth.

Some of them get quite busy with their work, which sometimes do involves saving people's life.

Every now and then when they get a little time they want to just play a little and have stress busting fun.

At 5:16 Subby charges and releases his x-ray, same as in MK9. So not always a counter, at least in this early build.

Steve Beran already confirmed in the Angry Joe interview that everyone would have at least more than one x-ray.
