How do I know this?
I shall show you how I found this out, firstly I decided to check out this site.
www.uspto.gov what is that?, well its the united states patent and trademark office.
Stay with me here I will show you something very intresting indeed.
http://tess2.uspto.gov/

This database allows you to search alive and dead patents narrowing the field down to alive patents when searching mortal kombat gives you a list.

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state;=4007:pev2el.2.11

If we looks at this one it clearly shows midway filed the patent and trademark but its null and void now.

Now check this out warner brothers trademark for the new game on march 16 2010

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state;=4007:pev2el.2.7

heres another for clothing again march 16 2010

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state;=4007:pev2el.2.8

one more for online again 16th march 2010

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state;=4007:pev2el.2.9

The next game will simply be called mortal kombat.

heres one for deadly alliance to show you that the name of the game is in the patent file.

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state;=4007:pev2el.2.1

Hope that helps.

It's entirely possible, especially if they're going to try and reboot the series, but I get the feeling that maybe at this point, the name hasn't been finalized, or perhaps if it has, the name simply hasn't been patented yet.

Either way though, we'll find out soon enough. Thanks for doing some digging man!

If the game is simply named Mortal Kombat I will be happy as hell. Though obviously WB could just be securing the property, right?

If this is true then I'll be happy. It'd be nice to see the names start from scratch rather than see the new game wrongly titled MK9.

Still sounds like a placeholder to me, but if it is true, then that really lends credence to the reboot theory. Hmmm...a reboot with Kitana already present...

Well, kinda pissed.Reboot the game mechanics, but not the story. If it's called simply 'Mortal Kombat' then they may have rebooted the story, which I found that pretty lame. Why reboot a great plot? And guess what,we'll never know what happened after armageddon...

Because in my opinion, the CURRENT way the plot has gone is pretty silly and virtually done for.

New company, first real next gen game. Why not start all over and add to it? It worked for Batman, it worked for Star Trek, why can't it work for MK?

A reboot would be interesting, but at the same time, if they lose stuff that I really like, then that will suck. Could go either way. Wait and see I guess.
Agreed on the series needing a reboot due to the story. It could easily be done, and it could clean up a lot of the mess the series has degraded into. It's going to be great.

The current plot leaves many unanswered questions that need to be answered.Scrap this plot and move on with a rebooted story?NO!!!!Look guys, thus far,it was a very clever plot in my opinion(although it had some plot-holes,they were not major and could be fixed). They don't have to change that god damnit!lol. This plot was a relative strength of the series and what draw you to play mk some more....With the reboot I don't think it will be the same..

This isn't necessarily proof of anything. They may simply have not decided on the final title of the game yet. When they do, THEN they will file for it.

Well aren't you quite the detective. I must say I am very impressed. However, I am going to call b.s. I think it could be a number of things. One, it is simply warner bros. claiming the rights. Two it could be they don't have a name yet so they just stuck with Mortal Kombat for the time being. I would find it highly unlikely for them to do a reboot or remake.

If that patent was from last year then I would agree its a placeholder name, but its from three weeks ago and the reveal is almost here. Im not saying this game is a reboot of the entire franchise, but im hearing wispers that it is.

^ this dude told us for certain about MK vs. DCU before it was even close to being announced, so I'm inclined to believe him
