It's been stated by many people here on this forum that the Raiden they had come to know through previous games, films etc. would never have gambled so carelessly with the souls of his warriors. Like Shadaloo pointed out in another topic, Raiden was someone willing to even give up his own immortality and risk permanent death in order to defeat Shao Kahn. He could have at least offered his own soul first before offering that of others.
I created this topic to ask, what if this WASN'T the Raiden we all knew from the old timeline? I don't mean that it was an impostor or that Raiden accidentally contacted an alternate reality instead of the old timeline, but what if something was influencing Raiden's mind to where he wasn't himself in MK9?
When Raiden called back to the past as Shao Kahn was about to kill him in the old timeline at the end of Armageddon, I think he accidentally also made contact with a malevolent being from another realm. I think that being is the same one he warns about in the comic series, "He who walks in silence".
I think this being is the same one who possessed Forrest Fox.
Whoever this being is, I think he manipulated Raiden through this mental/mystical link Raiden unknowingly created between them. Whoever it is, they wanted to help Quan Chi succeed in laying the groundwork for the Netherrealm's attack upon other realms.
My theory is that they wanted to weaken ALL of the realms...Earth, Outworld, Netherrealm etc. in order to make them vulnerable to invasion by the realm this being hails from.
I think you can probably all guess who I am talking about at this point.
Havik.
Remember Noob's ending from MK9?

Nobody is a strong enough to protect Earth like Raiden. Unless you throw Fuijn in the mix.
You guys REALLY want Raiden to be perfect. Firstly, as said in chapter 2 of the first comic issue, the demon wasn't released until after the netherrealm war. Secondly, and most importantly, the "out of character" or "bad" things Raiden did were SO minor, it would be extremely stupid to say he was possessed into doing them. He was possessed by a demon just for the demon to offer souls to Quan Chi, despite that one line of dialogue likely having 0 importance in the story, since Quan already had them?

Raiden didnt think he could ever die, since he's immortal. knowing he will die fucked him up mentally and he didnt know how to cope and made rushed decisions. Plus he went evil in the first timeline anyway. He's a tool.

I fully acknowledge that it was most likely just shitty writing, and nothing this carefully thought out. I'm just suggesting a way it could turn out NOT to be shitty writing. Even if it had been at first, they could write it this way and help fix their mistake.

So, Raiden is not Raiden?
It doesn't matter anyway because he will die during story-mode and yes, he may most-likely rise corrupted from the "demon" at the end.

I just think that this timeline's Raiden doesn't do good under pressure lol If you really think about it, this guy was more or less tasked with making sure Armageddon didn't happen. He KNEW it was going to happen unless he did something to cause some changes, but he wasn't sure what changes needed to be made, so he had to give it his best shot. Maybe im overthinking it (as I do often) god or not that's a lot of pressure on one person.
Anyway no matter what caused this time's Raiden to do what he did, it still made me take the character a little less seriously.

I always had the theory that Shinnok was able to sense that Raiden was trying to rewrite history, which is why Quan Chi was so much more prevalent in the MK9 storyline, and why 'his plan worked to perfection'. It just doesn't make sense to me that Raiden would be able to go back in time and change events without anyone being able to somehow notice. He's just one of many Earthrealm gods, not God himself. And if Raiden can do it, what's really stopping others from doing the same thing?

Um, when he sacrificed himself trying to stop Onaga he was tainted by Onaga's evil aura. That is what led to 'Dark Raiden'. He's not a tool.

No, did you read my post? I'm saying Raiden accidentally made a connection with a malevolent being from another realm when he reached out to himself in the past, and that being was clouding his judgment in order to manipulate events in MK9.

Exactly!
I'm thinking that someone took notice or even connected with him when he intervened in the past, and that they did some manipulation of their own on Raiden. It makes sense.

Yeah, in all likelihood he was just the victim of shitty writing that made his character look bad. They could still do something like this though and attempt to fix their mistake in MKX. Whether they will or not...well...I wouldn't have thought they'd finally move Scorpion beyond, "teh vengeance!!1", so you never know.

The problem is, that the majority of fans want Raiden to permanently die just for Fujin to rise to power.
Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
These people are still butthurt that their favorite Kuai Liang doesn't re-enact his journey as grandmaster in his clan & got reduced to expendable status.

He doesn't have to die. But the characters so far seem to have their minds made up on Raiden. It should be obvious by now that one or more of them are bound to act.

Honestly, they've been reading me harping about Raiden for years now. The whole idea of humanizing him WHILE he's a God character is a silly idea. At least in terms of his actually becoming human, and especially if they never utilize the idea that he does have an alternate, (higher) celestial form.
There's no way he should be making so many stupid mistakes if they'd raise his impact on the other characters (especially the bad guys), as well as the story-lines that he decides to be intricately involved with. His bad behavior is quite simply, due to bad writing.
On another note, I think it's really pretty stupid that every story arc seems to NEED to have a scapegoat dumbass (Scorpion, Shujinko, Raiden) who does nonsensical things just to be involved in the games. It's really just not well thought out writing. -- I think, if they write everything out well enough, other options would present themselves to the writers that would rid us of conundrums such as this.
So yea, let's hope, I guess.
