posted07/15/2015 01:03 PM (UTC)byUltimateRyuIt's all about DLC, tourney play, making exorbitant amounts of cash, promoting and spoiling your entire roster and just knowing everything prerelease. The MK of old is officially dead. And to top it all off the modern mainstream MK kommunity could care less. I guarantee you Mortal Kombat wouldn't have become this successful if they didn't nail that vibe we all love in the early titles. They had the perfect opportunity to implement an incredible secret fight with Tremor in MKX but instead they opted to have him as DLC for more $$$.

As far as secrets go, they probably didn't put them in because they wouldn't be secrets for more than a day, the hacker dudes would strip the game the second it came out and unleash all the secrets immediately.
I love the secrets MK has had, it was always one of my favorite things about the series, but in the age of hackers and the internet, there is almost no way to keep a secret in the game, especially full characters. It would be spoiled literally within a day or two of release :/

This. It's been this way for a long time, it's best just to get over it. MK still has secrets tho, like Reptile's hidden brutality.

Everyone gives these hackers too much credit. NRS could have easily hid, discreetly named or encrypted the files and folder locations for the hidden content. I mean they don't have to plop the data right in the same damn roster folder and/or with obvious file naming conventions.

They're going the Killer Instinct/MOBA route. Lots of characters released over time. You buy the character you want to main.
If you're buying all the characters... you're doing it wrong.

Except these hacker guys pour over every bit of data they find. That's how we already know most of the DLC dialogues before hand. If they hadn't found the character files themselves, they would've found traces or bits of dialogue and the secret would be out, if not in a day, then a week or two max and honestly, what fun is that for them spending weeks/months planning a surprise thats spoiled that quickly?
I honestly can't say I blame them for not doing so this time around. That age of gaming is dead.

You mean like the Vita challenge tower? I'm glad they made him a fully fleshed out playable character this time around, but i do detest the DLC scheme of doing things.

True, but you can mostly avoid finding out what the hackers find the same way you can avoid mostly spoilers if you want to.

Are you saying it's wrong to want all the content? Because frankly the way of making a 'complete' game and then releasing more content afterwards is bogus. Why shouldn't you have a fully complete game? That's what you paid for. And how do you know you like certain characters before you buy/try them out?

But saying it's only a secret to those very deliberately trying to keep it a secret doesn't mean much. I could just as easily never play any online modes and then, to me, king of the hI'll would be a secret.

Says who? There are people who play more than one character, and some people don't even care about a main or competitive play, they buy the characters they like.

DLC is just like all the different arcade revisions, back in the day. Every arcade had a slightly different version of each MK game, as they gradually added, and or tweaked features.

The online towers already have secret fights sometimes. But if you're talking about secret characters, well... one, you would still need to take a few minutes download the character's data (i.e. Kompatability Pack). And two, the moment the secret character appears, you'll see an avalanche of hatespam from the community griping that the character should have been on the roster already.

Just gonna say this lol. There are probably still some characters with a secret or alt brutality that we don't know. Anyway with secret fights idk why they didn't use make the npcs from story mode. I was hoping back when they were first showing the game that they would have a brand new secret character that they could have playable in mk11 but we just got boring playable character secret fights.

What if there are secret fights, but they are so secret that no one has come across them yet? Nah.
The secret characters were fun in the early games, but we are in a new era of gaming. Hell, some people are mad that the NPCs you fight in story mode weren't playable. Imagine their reaction to more fights against people you can't play as. We are apart of an entitled generation where everything must be available to us or they are ripping us off. DLC for example, would have been a god send back in the early days. Imagine being able to add more people to you MKII game? They even released 3 different versions of MK3 so they could add more people and tweak the gameplay. But, today we get "why do I have to pay for characters that should have been in the game already?"

I agree wholeheartedly, even if I do also balk a bit at having to pay for characters that are already in the game. Tanya is a shining example - she was created for the game, put into story mode, and then re-sold as a fighter you have to pay for later. Worse yet, she was being developed in tandem with the game, so she already existed in it with the full intention of her being sold separately later. I stick by the notion that Tanya and Rain should have been in the game over, say, Goro and Kung Lao/Liu Kang/Kitana. Goro's inclusion was pointless as he had no bearing on the game story. If anything, HE should've been DLC in the Kombat Pack, rather than "LOL SPEND MOAR MONEYZ ON DAY 1" disc-locked content.
But I otherwise agree with virtually EVERYTHING you said. We are an entitled generation. As someone born in that grey area between Gen X and Gen Y (Millenials) in the early 80's, I'm disgusted at how entitled this younger generation of people are. It really is despicable. Such a bunch of whiners. The difference between the legacy fans versus the new fans (who probably weren't even alive when UMK3 was in arcades) is staggering, and why I imagine most of the "legacy" fans have long since abandoned ties with the community as a whole. Frankly I don't know why I bother...I absolutely despise the community.
Whenever I see some little bitch on this forum boast, saying "I already returned it" or "I don't even have it yet and I don't care" - Mortal Kombat ain't for you, kiddiez. Go find another game.

Yeah I don't understand a lot of the constant crying about dlc. You don't have to buy anything you don't want to and if you truly love the game I can't understand how more of that game is a bad thing? As mentioned above older players like myself would have loved the option back in the day..imagine buying extra maps for contra or metroid back then? Instead we had to wait years for crappy sequels that usually weren't that much of an upgrade and would suck.
And it can't possibly be the price..I spend more than 5 dollars for snacks at work on a daily basis. If you are a little kid I can understand it sucking having to ask your parents for more money, but id be willing to bet your parents would gladly spend 5 bucks to get you out of their hair even for an hour.
Bring on the dlc....if I don't like it I just won't buy it...very simple and easy.

Actually yes, it is partly about the price. As an adult responsible for rent and all kinds of other expenses, when purchasing a 'fun' item like a game i want value for money, and to not feel cheated out of content unless i spend more money that i don't really have. (Let's not forget that little kids really shouldn't be anywhere near MK).
The principle is about how corporate companies treat loyal consumers. The assumption here is that everyone has extra money to burn, has internet access on their consoles, has a dumb phone to unlock all the 'extra' extras that really should have been unlockable in the actual product - you know, self-contained.
It's not more of a game. It's the stuff they left off deliberately to shill later.
Still now i don't have MKX but when it finally does come out for 360 i have no idea whether or not to bother until the "komplete" edition (if that even gets released for past gen) because it will be missing about half the content others will have by then.

Yeah, I'm somewhat torn on the subject. In one hand I understand how the cost of games have gone up exponentially along with inflation yet the price of games haven't really increased; on the other hand this is one of the most despised practices in the industry.
I was actually okay with the different approach for MK X because MK9 was pure fan service, and the next step is to appeal to a wider audience. My fear is the MK of old is dying off because WB and NRS found out how popular you can get by pandering to the FGC. I'm afraid they're going to forget why MK became so big.

Every game has stuff they have to leave off. Skyrim was planned to have a war going on with the two sides actively trading bases and strongholds in real time, but due to time reasons they had to skin it down to a quest.
In the case of MKX, the vanilla game, in my opinion has more content than the Komplete edition of MK9(more unlockable skins, an extravagant Krypt mode, higher quality cutscenes, more online options, and while a smaller roster it has much more depth). They had Goro as pre-order DLC, but MK9 had three whole characters (one being Goro) who weren't playable at all without hacking the game. Is that somehow better? What if MKII offered to let you play as Kintaro if you pre-ordered the game?
