Not holding out hope for Havik, Tanya et al now...

Same here. That said I don't know if it's a wise choice on their part having 95% of the cast be new. I mean I want new characters and I'm loving what I'm seeing, but too many newbies could easily backfire and turn people off. Like a poster said last night, I don't want this to feel like Scorpion & Subby are guest characters simply because there's so many newbies.

Again, I LOVE the new characters, I'm just hoping for some of our old favorites to show up.

One thing's for sure, Boon is bound to piss a lot of people off. lol

I could tell by his reply to the question regarding the return of familiar characters that he senses a backlash. Boon pretty quickly skimmed passed the question and alluded to familiarity rather than familiar characters.

This presents the possibility that there will be very few characters returning from previous games.

Hopefully, there are no more than 10 new characters.

I *definitely* got the impression that Boon was trying to tame the heat and balance fan expectation there for returning characters. Well, there's still over a year before release. Who really knows how far along this is in production? It seems so polished, but who can say? Boon still has time to gauge fan reaction. Although this is looking *awesome* and there's zero doubt I'll purchase, - I'm a little worried what we will get is "Mortal Kombat: Third Strike". Fans have waited a long time to see a few revamped favorites, and there was a strong expectation of that. I hope there's a balance here and not a flat out clean slate.

Could Subz/Scorp be the Ryu/Ken of SF3 here? It's a risky strategy. At the very least, I'm expecting new characters to outnumber returning players for the first time since - when? - MK2?

At this point, I could probably see half and half. So if there's 24 characters to start of with, I could see 12 new characters added. And then besides Scorpion and Sub-Zero, we could see 10 returners. Maybe 6 from MK9 and 4 from the MK4-MKA era?

And maybe some new characters might actually be old characters. Like Ermac's dominant soul becomes King Jerrod for this game and he's considered new or like Ed Boon said, we'll see decedents of older characters.

My gut says 12 new characters, 6 from MK4-MKD and 6 returning from MK9. Which gives us a total of 24.

The only game I've ever seen where a horde of new characters proved successful was Tekken 3.

I guess the characters were just that amazing, and they are. lol Hopefully MKX obtains similar success. I'm still loving D'Vorah, nonetheless. grin

Ok, so my first two posts in this thread were before the trailer and news we got today. The direction the MK team seems to want to take for this game could set an unprecedented amount of new characters, so disregard my original predictions and thoughts. Expect the unexpected for this game it seems.

Also the 'Who's Next?' tagline is starting to make a lot of sense.

Messy, hopefully they know what they're doing. Hopefully they don't pull a SF3/SCV and have the game flopping like these 2 mentioned.

SF3 is universally considered the best SF game and one if not the best fighting game of all time, and flopped. Your point?

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised to see all new characters save Scorp and Subbie. I say this hoping I'm wrong. I don't hate the designs, I just want there to be a few returning characters.

Although I want a GREAT MK game, a new cast is no guarantee of that in itself. It's also important Boon delivers a commercially successful game (for obvious reasons).

Alienating hordes of casual gamers (and MK hardcore) who may not be willing to adopt a largely new roster may not be the best approach for that, quality game or otherwise.

So far, MK2015 is taking some big risks. There are ways for Ed to approach this without pissing too many people off, it's a careful balance I hope he makes.

You see Boon didn't get worried at "ton new characters" if anything I am glad they are exerting efforts into new stuff. What I am worried about is familiar descendants. This absolutely goes against originality. What's the point from bringing a new character only to cast around him the shadows of other characters.

I think that would be a cool way to balance things out. Even though I'm not really a fan of characters after MK3, plenty of people here are, so I'm sure it would make them happy....Besides I do kind of miss Tanya and her shady ways lol

Well, Deception was somewhat the same, and it was quite successful.

It had only six characters from Deadly Alliance, it had eight new characters, and eight characters returning from previous games. It was a big risk, and the game sold over a million copies in a week, and over 2 million by the next year, making it one of the best selling games of the series. In addition, Deception received amazing reviews, some heralding the game as one of the best games of the franchise.

Who knows? MKX could prove to be the same.

I find it funny that everyone was hating on me when I was saying that this game would consist of more than half being brand new fighters. Now that everyone has seen these videos, everyone's on board.

As I stated in my thread last week, this game will be SF3-Esq.

I'm hoping that there's another row tacked on before release so that there's at least slots for 8-12 more characters who we won't know about. Taking a huge dip from MK9, which had 32 and going to 24 might sting a little. Especially when a majority are unfamiliar faces.

I think that the DLC for this game will be all returning characters though.

The initial roster will be more New than returning, and the DLC will be fighters from past MK games.

I like how you feel the need to stress that you LOVE these new characters as if you're trying to avoid any bashing by others. No need for that mess, here's what I think straight up.

D'Vorah or how ever you spell it is cool/badass
I don't know what to make of this Katal Kahn dude yet
Ferra/Torr is interesting and a breath of fresh air (reminds me of Bran and Hodor)
And I HATE the idea of this Cassie Cage chick I mean really? C'mon!

I would like to see four characters returning from the MKDA and MKD era: Bo Rai Cho, Drahmin, Hotaru and Havik, to me they're all badass and would fit nicely, but I know Drahmin ain't coming back, unfortunately...

I actually like these characters more than any new character from IV.

As for new characters, bring a whole bunch of them, I like the idea.

You know, I really wouldn't mind if there are more new characters than recurring. I really wouldn't mind at all. Granted that this series has 60+ characters, some I doubt will ever get another chance in a game, but you know, I go tired of playing characters that have no originality to them. I mean with Ferra and Torr, they're brand new looking characters, none of them looks like anything that we've seen before, and I'm amazed to see that. I say bring on the new characters.

I mean, really, the only recurring character I really cared about seeing is Sub-Zero, so I'm already pleased. (Well, it's not that hard to please me anyways)
