If you track or add MK9 to your wish list, you can see a release date. I know it's not true but I had to post it.

It also says it is 2D.

I don't know what's funnier, the fact that it comes out on New Year's Eve, or that it's listed as a 2D game.

When they guess at game release dates why do they always choose New Years Eve or Christmas day.
No ones gonna believe that.

I honestly don't think it matters and am kinda happy its 2d. To me the 3d was good but the 2d was much better and Im hoping they greatly improve it..

Could be fake.

If truly 2D, then this franchise has dug it's grave deep enough.

gamespot is won of my favorite sites i like to go on besides ign.com.
the release date is most likely real but will be pushed back like most games on the gamespot site. also mk says it is 2d which is wrong because gamespot makes an occasional error when it comes to fighting games on 2d or 3d.

my guess that it will get pushed back to early january or the end february and will be 3d.

I think the date is probably to signify that while they don't know the exact date now, it'll be coming by the end of 2010.

My guess is that it'll be coming in October of 2010, given that's usually around the time that most MK games have come out recently. I seriously doubt it would come out 6 days after Christmas. I know a lot of games are getting pushed past the holidays this year, but that's more first quarter 2010 than a few days after the holidays.

As for the whole 2D thing. That could be Gamespots error, or maybe the MK team has seen the success that SF4 has had and realized that it's okay to make a 2D fighting game with 3D elements as long as it's good.

Personally, I doubt this. It's certainly possible, but I don't see the MK team heading backwards like that. They've been trying to craft a good 3D MK game for about 10 years now. I can't see them throwing in the towel and going back to what worked 15+ years ago.

yeah I don't get where this sudden interest in a 2D fighting style MK came from. Forward progression please.

If it's done right I think a 2D MK9 could be badass. I would be concerned about the story though. Like in MK VS DC the game got very old for me because there was nothing to do but climb the tower and fight the same people over and over.

How do you put a good konquest with 2D? I like the konquest but we should be able to use different characters. MK needs something new to keep it fresh and have re-play value.

I don't know why people are complaining about it being 2d. For me I was kind of excited. The old school MK were the ones i played the most and had the most fun playing. The new are only decent in my books. If they could pull off a good fighting game that could compete with SF4 I'd definetly be happy. I think they shouldn't do Konquest ne more or if they do make it a seperate game or better yet an online game, similar to wow perhaps.

2D MK > 3D MK

2D Fighter > 3D Fighter

This isn't about the evolution of a gaming franchise, or forward progression. 2D fighters are more enjoyable than 3D fighters. Street Fighter, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, SNK, and of course classic Mortal Kombat are better than Tekken, Soulcalibur and DOA

It's not gonna be 2D. They devs are not THAT stupid.

Besides, they're using the Unreal Engine again, which means it'll most likely be developed from MKvsDC's gameplay system and mechanics.

I disagree with the general 2D > 3D point of your argument. Mostly because I enjoy 3D over 2D.

wasnt it already stated that MK9 had the unreal engine??? that would make it along the lines of mk vcs DC in terms of presentation would it not???

unless I misheard, it has been a while.

BUT there is evidence that MOTION CAPTURE is being used, and boon tlaking about doing 14 fatalities in one day. Too much points to this not being 2D.

as long as it is good, 2d or 3d doesnt really matter, id pick 3d if I had a choice because i want the gore we can get from it.

Going back to 2D doesn't mean they have to go back to digitized graphics. Don't forget that MKvsDC plays like a 2D fighter if you use the dpad only.
I'd expect something like MKvsDC without the sidestepping options (left trigger/thumbstick).

That's exactly what I thought about because generally speaking, that's how I played MKvsDC. Felt better without having to worry about side-stepping. It was added strategy, sure. But I didn't miss it in MKvsDC because I really wasn't forced to use it.

That said, I'm not sure that I'd mind a 2D MK if it was like that, but I would be disappointed that they didn't really ever master their territory in the 3D world.

I really wonder if they've been holding out all this time.

I don't think they are going back to 2D. For some reason I'm getting the feeling, that they are too proud for that. They made a little step back to the 2D roots with MK vs. DC, but look how many games/years they waited untill they finally did just that little step. I could be wrong tough, just a feeling.

I wouldn't mind, and the same goes for a lot of gamers, who are asking me time and time again .. when is MK going back to their roots? because they still love playing the old MK games.
