Mk vs Dc was a gamble and it paid off. I think the point of your last point is invalid. You seem to want a game with better stories and progression. We all do. You don't get that by taking out all of the characters and elements that brought you to the dance in the first place. I think that is where you are going wrong in my opinion.
After 8 games plus 3 spin offs, which were also a risk, television series, comics, and movies, the established characters and realms are a part of mk. They are a part of its fabric. If you take those out, you kill the series.

I've read a lot of your post, and I ALWAYS agree with what you have to say ^_^
Mortal Kombat has ENOUGH characters as it is and I don't understand how people want there to be a bunch of new characters just for the sake of having new characters and creating a "new" storyline. When in reality, current characters just need to be polished up and given a relevant and exciting storyline.

AcidSlayer, I'm sorry dude, I respect your opinion, BUT you're trippin'. When people pick up a Mortal Kombat game, they pretty much expect Sub Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Sonya, Liu Kang, Jax and a couple other classics. Theres been plenty of times where I take a newly released MK Game to someones house and people always say stuff like, "oh where is the guy that does lightning?" "where is that chick with the fans?" or "wheres that robot ninja?" I think it would be better to just continue with the characters that started off the series. Its interesting when you pick up a MK game and remember Liu Kang being the hero and then all of a sudden, he's a zombie. A good storyline can make all of the classics interesting and when people pick up a Mortal Kombat game, they expect to see these classics. Look at X-Men and Street Fighter, they pretty much always have their core characters. You won't see a Street Fighter game without Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Blanka, Guile, Vega etc. X-Men always has a mix of their main characters. Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, Gambit etc.
I play Mortal Kombat because of all those classic characters. THOSE are the characters that made the series, those are the characters that made the series soooo iconic. Not only that, there are some classic characters that never got the chance to shine, (ex: Ermac, Sektor, Rain, etc) and this would be the perfect time to give them a good storyline.
It would be ridiculous to have a cast of Sub Zero and Scorpion. Then Nitara, Drahmin, Hsu Hao, Kobra, Jarek, Hotaru and Bo Rai Cho and 10 new characters...that would not be a good direction to go.
Midway knows that the classics are the characters that bring in the most CASH, hence why only classic characters were picked for MKvsDC. Those classics are always the best way to go. Especially because they are in need of making cash right now. No more Chaos Realm, no more order realm, no more vampire race!
I think that this cast for MK9 would make it an amazing game with some polished up costumes, new storylines and a touch of darkness.

6) Shang Tsung
7) Reptile
8) Sonya
9) Kitana
10) Jax
11) Ermac
12) Mileena

15) Shao Kahn
16) Quan Chi
17) Kabal
18) Goro
19) Li Mei (Fresh face)
20) Kenshi (fresh face)
21) Jade
22) Noob Saibot
23) Reiko
As for new characters:
24) A Shadow Priest (This would be a relevant character)
25) The Lin Kuei Grandmaster (Again, a relevant character) and thats it for new characters. Maybe a new boss..
This would make an amazing Mortal Kombat game IMO

Honestly, at this point, if I see another Mortal Kombat with half the pre-MK3 sacred cows in it, I probably won't bother buying it.
EdenianNinja, thank you for the kind words. I am glad to that you agree with the majority of my feelings for the series. You build on the basics and make improvements from there without forgetting what brought you to the dance. Not against newness unless it is at the expense of the original concepts.
