Why are all of these "not human"? Yeah, Edenians aren't from Earth, but that doesn't mean they aren't human. They seem awfully human-like to me, just because they are from a different realm doesn't mean they are a different species. If there was a bird-like creature in Edenia that looked exactly like a bird, would you not call it a bird simpy because it is from Edenia and not Earthrealm?

As for Li Mei, I think the same can apply. There are a few species of humanoids in Outworld, but not all of them are Tarkatans and such.

Just for the record the color of someone's skin does not equal their race. And many anthropologist agree that race doesn't really exist at all. Just putting that out there.

Also I don't think people should focus on characters' race anyway. I just see people not colors <3 wink

BTW I didn't even notice that there wasn't a single Asian woman in the game until I saw this thread.

I thought Mileena and Kitana were Asian.... Oops. I just thought they looked white sort of like how Anime characters look, but are actually Asians. Haha.

I don't mind what they are, but it'd be cool if they were Asian. We need more diverse representation!! :)

I wont say my opinion on the subject. I do however feel Im in a unique position to talk about this isssue.

I live in the state of Nebraska, which is well over 90% white. However my closest friends are Newell (Dark Black), and Jason (Mexican). Then I am of course a white guy with an interesting speaking style lol. This is a synopsis based on what Ive observed and the topic does come up quite often.

I personally dont care about race, but that could be because my race is widely represented in almost every game. I have a vast selection to choose from. My favorite character is Nightwolf and the fact that he is native american does have a little to do with. Growing up in Nebraska, most of the land around here was formerly native American tribal grounds. Our counties and cities are named after the tribes and I was very much into Native American culture growing up. Nightwolf to me seams like a very proud, wise, and noble warrior. He strikes me as little deeper than the other combatants.

Newell is a very proud African-American man. One of the first things he wants to know about a game is if he can play as a black character. If he can, he does. So it matters actually a very great deal to him. He can enjoy a game in which he must play a white character, but would much prefer to play as an African-America. His favorite character is Jax. Newell was raised in a military family, and his personality is that of someone who takes care of buissness and presents himself as a definite alpha-male. Newell almost is the real life Jax lol.

Jason is much more laid back, and doesnt really care if their is or is not a latino character in the game. However he does notice the diferent races of the characters and he does take notice of the ethnicities of the diferent kombatants. His favorite character is Noob Saibot, because he just likes Noob's move list.

So there you have 3 diferent perspectives from 3 diferent people.

I wish this appearance for Kitana had become the official look. She was masked in MK2 & UMK3 (minus ending pics), so when they finally unmasked her in MKG we got to see a Kitana who looked like a woman from East Asia. Too bad they decided in MKDA to remove this lovely look for her. Oh, and I think Li Mei, if she were on Earth, would be bi-racial consisting of Mongoloid and Caucasoid.

I disagree. Her MK Gold look was heavily based off of Talisa Soto (who doesn't even remotely look Asian (IMO).) She always appeared Hispanic to me, and definitely not Asian in MKG. The closest thing she could pass for is a Filipina Mestiza, if she were from Earthrealm.
She did look a lot better in MKG compared to her lazy-eyed, big lipped, half-asleep reincarnation in MKDA (again IMHO.)

On the topic of this thread. Most of the females from the Mortal Kombat cast are not from Earthrealm, which is only one of 7+ realms. Eventually, I'd like to see another Earthrealm female (as there are currently only 3).
However, I frequently play as people who are not my race/gender, and same with my friends. We certainly have a diverse enough cast.

If you played MKG frequently, which is your "qualification" to denote her racial influence, then we should trust your opinion instead of actual pictures that show an obvious East Asian influence; makes sense. Carry on, I say.

Jesus Christ! No need to get so pissy.

I simply said MKG Kitana does not look Asian to me (which means 'in my opinion.'

I'm sorry that I don't see it.
I see Talisa Soto (who is Italian/Puerto Rican), who she was modeled after.

God damn. confused Whatever.

Ah the age old debate over MK character ethnicity. Seriously at this point I don't know why people bother as:

A. It always ALWAYS leads to circular arguments and pointlessness.

B. The interpatation of said character's ethnicity is inherently flawed since it's subjective and based on a fantasy character. While physical attributes for some character can be guessed at with some educated confidence (such as Sonya being caucasian or Jax being African-American), more ambiguous characters like Jade and Tanya are almost impossible to determine.

I don't want to analyze this too much but since these fictional characters resemble the physical likeness of real-world ethnic counterparts YET remain characters constructed in fantasy, it's near impossible to make statements like "Jade is Black" or "Jade is Indian". Honestly, these fantasy Edenian characters at BEST are an amalgam of real-world ethnic influences yet DEVOID of key real-world CULTURAL influences that make a simple classification such as "Hispanic" or "Chinese" unreliable.

Or...in short. Skin tone of these character alone is not enough to designate cultural identity ESPECIALLY in conjunction with a ficional/fantasy cultural setting.

Disco Diva "seems to me like you got a chip on your shoulder. There's NEVER been a consensus about what Jade's race is. To outright ASSume that everyone knows she's black and I must be racist because I, knowing she's black, want her to be something else just makes you look stupid. Her skin isn't even that dark, and she has GREEN eyes. How many "negroids" do you know with vividly emerald green eyes?"
LOL at this entire thread laughable really...as in regards to negroids as you so eloquently put it I am black with hazel eyes but I suppose thats genetically impossible lmfao you all need a real life or something more fulfilling to replace what appears to me to be idle hands.

Y'know why Tekken and Street Fighter fill up their rosters with a character of every race and culture on the planet and MK doesn't?

Because MK is about other planets

Too many "cultural" characters means too many characters from Earthrealm which means the good guys outnumbering the bad guys and you can't fucking have that.

As Razor said above, thats the reason we don't have characters from various ethnic origins from Earth realm. I'm quite ok with humanoids from Outworld and other realms, they seem fine to me in terms of proportions.

But I would love more MK characters to represent various different parts of Earth. It seemed for too long that there are only three countries in MK, USA, China and Japan. Now we have Cyrax hailing from Botswana, Smoke from Prague being a European, Mavado being hispanic and Kano being portrayed as Australian was a great move etc. This adds depth to Earth realm characters, just like being from Outworld adds depth to their characters. I can understand the over use of Chinese characters as this game's roots go back to kung fu tournaments and martial arts which originated from this region. But there are too many representatives from USA which is not necessary.

Perhaps in future games they can add stuff like Kabal is originally from Canada, Jarek could be Afghan or more middle east based. Kai could be from the Indian Sub-continent, Kenshi could be Japanese as he is very samurai like. I would love if there was stuff like this added to them, not necessarily as I type them but they can be from other places in earth realm. I would love if Skarlett ends up from Japan as she seems very ninja like. The not so popular characters like Kai, Jarek, Kobra and Kira could be updated and given more background by adding to their ethnic origins and giving them some personal traits which people can relate to.

Just to make it clear, I don't have problems with characters which are white, black, asian etc, I but I think MK could add more diversity in terms of adding characters from different continents, hence if you have to add a white male, why through in one from USA when you can add an English, Irish or Scotish character. If you have to throw in more asians, adding a middle eastern or a subcontinental character is a better idea imo as there is already a lot of oriental asian characters. Also characters like Sareena and Ashrah were not always demons so just because they come from the Netherrealm doesn't mean they cannot have ethnic origins from Earth realm if they were originally from here that is.

The next game should present us with a lot more newer characters who were mostly very underdeveloped, I hope they add such diversity and show that Raiden sought out fighters from different parts of Earth realm to battle Shinnok and Quan Chi's invasion.

I dont want to get too in depth as were going around in circles
firstly I'd like to say I'm not in the slightest bit concerned what race a character is just so long as they have character! but at the same time I can understand that everyone wants representation in any media.
Lastly while the argument that many characters are not human is perfectly valid, is it out of the realm of possibilities that like Earth, Edenia has other continents and countries along with other ethnic backgrounds?
Just a thought ;)

Jeesh, FINE. I will rephrase it then. Why is it that all the characters from "different planets" always appear as some type of caucasian?

Right, there's absolutely no difference between this guy:

And this guy

Those two look pretty much the same. Not a bit of difference between them other than their stature, hair color, arm length, etc. GTFO.

Whether or not any politically-motivated "study" shows that race "doesn't exist," normal human beings with a lick of common sense can spot the main difference between the russian president and the nigerian president the instant they look at them.

Yes, it's perfectly "valid", but it's not very useful. The alien characters' looks (except for Sheeva's and Reptile's, of course) are OBVIOUSLY based on EARTH-DWELLING HUMAN BEINGS and their respective races, and most of them are white.
