It's not like it's hard to make it make sense. All you need is for Shang and Kahn to tell Kitana a convincing enough lie. And apparently they're pretty fucking good at lying to her what with it taking her ten thousand years to find out she's adopted.

"Y'know how our realm is filled with rebels and enemies to the throne? Well you had a twin sister, but one of them kidnapped her when you were little, and we never told you 'cause we thought she was dead, but we finally found her."

Honestly, that took me ten seconds.

And the reason people complain about the MK9 version isn't just because it's different from her MK2 story, it's because it's just plain not very good all on its own. There's no emotion, depth, or nuance to either the way the dialogue was written or Mileena's new personality, and Kitana doesn't even discover the truth on her own, Kahn just DECIDES TO TELL HER "Hey guess what, I'm not even your real dad!" for no good reason, because apparently he never liked Kitana. And WHY did he never want Kitana? Only because "bad guy has to be bad in every possible way, no way can we show Kahn like or care for or want to keep his stepdaughter. Loving your family isn't evil!" I'm sorry, but that's called bad writing. If you're gonna go to the trouble of having a story mode with cinematic cutscenes, then you should also at least bother to make the characters 3-dimensional, give the villains some positive traits and give the heroes some negative ones so they're not just bland action figures.

Totally agree.

I think they should have kept the original story, but just filled in the gaps. Like you said explain how Kitana and Mileena were told they were sisters or whatever when Kitana has a good 9000 years on Mileena. Not thoughtful writing at all there.

Another thing. It was pretty dumb that Shao Khan just out of the blue told Kitana hes not her father and then hes like lets kill her too. Like uh did you not raise her for 10,000 years and stuff? If he didnt love or even like her that much, why would he keep her around for that long? Sindel convinced him of her worth or whatever, but he kept her that long, he had to have some affection for Kitana.

Yeah the retcon gave Mileena a new personality and now shes not bound to Kitana, but c'mon. They had an iconic rivalry. How are you just gonna cancel all that out?

I wish they would make Kitana stay evil somehow. If not evil, then just like a bad guy or neutral. She could be like the Baroness from GI Joe.

Kahn did have affection for her, in fact he WANTED to have her as a daughter. But becuase of what he did to her father and mother, she would turn against him immediately once the truth came out and betray him.

So becuase of that, he ordered for her death, thus having Mileena take over as his new daughter.

I hated what they did with Kitana and Millena in this game. It would've been much much interesting if they had hept the original story, with the original Millena. They gave this new Millena a interesting personality, but that is not Millena, with the change they destroyed the awsome charachter they had made, who during the second trilogy was the most interesting female charachter. They should've kept the old story and made them out of the same model, only changing the clothes, hair and mouth. The eyes are the worst thing. I'm really anoyed about what they did with Kitana and Millena. So sad.

That's literally the exact opposite of the words that come out of his mouth in MK9 story mode. He makes it very clear that he NEVER wanted Kitana, the only reason he kept her alive is Sindel begged him to. He let her live basically as long as she made herself useful by being obedient and a good assassin. But Kitana had started failing her missions and pissing him off, so the moment he found out Shang had successfully finished making a Mileena, he was like "Ha ha, you're useless and now that I have the kind of evil monster daughter I always wanted, I can get rid of you."

Easy. The original timeline Kahn had some affection towards Sindel and her daughter. Current timeline Shjao Kahn is probably a solipsist egomaniac who does not.

That's not exactly bad writing, but a different choice altogether. This Kahn is more of an asshole simple as that. Apparently someone decided that the Kahn and his affection was superfluous. Their choice. Ion retrospect this might make him more bland, but Kahn's familiar ties are among the least important things to MK.

Like MortalSidd said a page back, this scenario is in all forms of media. So much so, that it's probably referred to as a "device" in tv/film making. The viewer knows Clark Kent is obviously Superman, but take those glasses off and the citizens of metropolis have no clue. I've seen it on sitcoms, cartoons, movies, and videogames. Like when the evil brother of space ghost had that goatee...

The hell it's not. You think everything is subjective, Chrome. Y'know what? No. Not this time. One-dimensional characterization is NOT a deliberate artistic choice, it's not a matter of opinion, it's the product of a lack of skill. Professional writers are supposed to flesh their characters out. Shao Kahn is not evil for a reason, he's evil for evil's sake and the script just takes for granted that the audience doesn't need a reason, they'll accept a bad guy doing bad things just because he's the bad guy, and writing is a craft and that is poor craftsmanship. That's like a carpenter putting only one nail in a shelf and then when it hangs the fuck off the wall sideways, going "I meant to do that, I think it looks better that way."
Consider that this is probably the last time for a long time that we'll see Shao Kahn as a major figure in a "canon" MK game...and they STILL didn't fill in his origin story! They just didn't bother! We get to know that Johnny fuckin' Cage, the game's comedy relief, has an origin story: he's got powers because his ancestors were an ancient greek magic cult or some shit, like we even needed that when he's already a master martial artist and "chi" would've been enough...but the end boss, a character who's been around for eighteen years, still has nothing more for backstory than "Durr...he stole Onaga's throne and he wants to merge the realms to rule the universe." Is there a why? Pfft, of course not, why would a bad guy need a reason to be bad!
