To be fair, Kitana doesn't ALWAYS wear blue. She wore purple in Deadly Alliance, for instance.
I think, generally, most people are upset that Mileena's face changed to not just having sharp teeth, but also a different nose, eyes, hair, and skin color... and then still pretending they look the same.
It's like when Sub-Zero and Scorpion were the only ninjas, they explained that Scorpion actually was wearing a Lin Kuei uniform in yellow, to mock their cowardice... but when they became far too individualistic, they dropped that. They didn't drop the Kitana/Mileena identity mix-ups though.

The whole thing is stupid really. They completely ruined one of the most interesting rivalries of mk.
BTW in deception kitana and mileenna had the same costume.
At least in this game, Kitana and Mileena do look the same minus the eyes and hair....and we don't need sorcery or other silliness to explain a girl getting a haircut. And Smoke (who was probably itching for a fight after watching Sub-Zero get abducted) was still the only one fooled.
Meanwhile in Deception, Mileena fools Bo Rai Cho, Li Mei, and a whole freakin army that she's Kitana. And they don't look anything alike...besides the hair, Kitana is noticeably thicker than Mileena in the 3D games. Now that's ridiculous. At least in MK9 they share the exact same body model.
And yet, I've been lurking on this forum long enough to know that the 3D era is considered the HIGH point of MK storytelling by a lot of you. Go figure.

I personally like them different because I wouldn't like the idea of two characters that look too similar (but then you know, ninjas are an exception! haha)
But I think they should have at least made them comparable, but they simply are too different even upper facial wise.
I like the difference, I love Mileena's and Kitana's individual looks. I just think they need to drop this twin sister thing since they retconned the growing up together part which would have made the most sense of when they looked alike.
Now they aren't even born together to justify the word "twins."

This wouldnt have been an issue if NRS just kept the original story of Kitana and Mileenna. Their rivalry was interesting and unique, something that Scopion and Sub-Zeo's seem to lack.
It would have been so easy to have a scene between Kitana and Mileenna were they would fight for Shao Kahn's attention. Kitana would win, of course, leaving Mileenna to resent her even more.
And there you have it, I just came up with that in ten seconds and it makes more sense than what NRS had years to come up with.

The whole twins issue would make sense if they haven't fucked it up by saying Shang Tsung created Mileena instead of Shao Kahn.
Shang creates Mileena = Shang is 1.000 years old. Kitana is 10.000. Shang created Mileena some time within the last thousand years yet Kitana automatically accepts the fact that she has an ugly as hell twin sister she hasn't seen for most of her life and who, conveniently, appears only after her father gets a sorcerer to work for him.
Kahn creates Mileena = He could have created her when Kitana was just a baby. Kitana knows Mileena since they were both kids. End of story. No conflict there.

But the twin thing is not really present anymore. Mileena calls Kitana sister to because she has her blood it ends there. I like because even if many people complain about it and say that it lack the "super depth" of the original story, it allows Mileena to do something besides getting killed. She is not the flawed replacement, She was actually meant to be born this way as seen with the other prototypes in the flesh pits

Even though it is basically the only way to make another match happen for Smoke, it's completely stupid that someone would get somebody mixed up with a character that has long hair, new appearance and a change in color.
When, I'm pretty sure during the times he has seen Kitana, she has worn the same thing.
Again, I can say this is being way to o technical...

Well, if she is the princess they could think that she has more than one piece of clothing, or that she did used those clothes and cut her hair in order to escape of the fortress (when she actually gets rescued she does have other clothes). Mileena was unconsious so he couldnt see her eyes and the diffirent color could be blamed to the place lighting and to Smoke dumb fury. CSZ defeating Goro and Kintaro on the other hand doesnt make any sense

Sweet I've been referred to as someone here, I think I'm going places. :P
I'd like to think of this specific scenario like it's treated in cartoons, or hell any other form of media. It's blatantly obvious to the player/viewer that the person in question isn't the person they're thought to be.
Who's to say smoke did anything other than quickly glance at mileena lying on the ground? Mileena isn't known about and jade was obviously thought to still be on kahn's side who else would she attack in that case? If anything it's raiden's fault he OBVIOUSLY had a vision about mileena and didn't speak about it, how else would he have known that was mileena... err in this context. The others thought the same (look at liu kangs reaction he looked like he was ready to fight imo) but I guess smoke beat them to the punch.

yeah MK's logic makes no sense... or no sense 2 most of us.
also do the eye's of smoke look more asian than those of sub zero...
(i know that he's from the Czech Republic, that were once invaded by Mongolia in the 1400s. but still!)
or like shang tsung buying guns?! like he needs guns -_-
there should be a thread for MK's illogical logics.

That Smoke mistaking Mileena for Kitana and attacking Jade even while Raiden is screaming "That's not Kitana, fucking stop you idiot!" scene isn't even the only time in story mode that Smoke provokes a fight for no good reason. He attacked Kitana herself before then, WHILE Raiden was trying to talk Kitana into allying with him.
So either the writers weren't paying attention to their own work or we're MEANT to think one of Smoke's personality traits is that he is a dumb, eager to fight asshole who doesn't like to talk or think first and just attacks people by mistake all the time.
That said...Mileena is actually supposed to be able to pass for Kitana if you can't see what's under the mask. The glowing yellow eyes were a huge mistake. Mileena even successfully poses as Kitana in front of a whole army and several very close allies of Kitana's for a long period of time in Deception - though in that game she had normal eyes, she ACTUALLY ACTED like Kitana instead of going around giggling and trying to kill people, and everyone had thought Mileena was dead for years so none of them suspected she could've been switched with a clone.
Why the whole "Kitana wears blue, not pink" thing didn't seem to occur to any of them, I can't say. It could simply be that they do wear different color clothes all the time off-screen, it's just that the games only show their color-coded uniforms so we the players can identify them easier, since...y'know, the average person is kinda dumb. In fact, I have several friends who don't play MK very often and are always getting the two mixed up, asking me "which is the blue one and which is the purple one again?" So yeah, the color coding is necessary.

I dont think they are going to use the sibling rivalry in those games, because they werent meant to be twins in this continuty, they just happened to use Kitana DNA for some random reason(maybe to mock her, Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung are such a trolls). Besides she doesnt need to impersonate Kitana anymore. Now that she was actually intended to ve ugly abd still be the princess she doesnt need to pose as Kitana to get the power she wants. She can have technicolor eyes

Kahn clearly still wanted his "perfect daughter" to be a version of Kitana even in the rebootverse. Just a ruthless, evil version he could control and trust. Hence the cloning. If all he wanted as a daughter, and not "a better version of Kitana", he would've fucking went out and knocked a broad up like a normal goddamn person. Resorting to cloning when impregnating someone is so much easier says the Kitana part is important to him.

Still no sibling rivalry because the jealous one was Mileena
They pretty much just destroyed both Kitana and Mileena's backstory.
I think its kinda weird that on themortalkombat.com website under Mileena's bio it says she "covets the throne her virtuous sister occupies" To me this implies that Kitana was the princess of Outworld and Mileena is jealous of that, referencing their old storyline.
NRS should have just elaborated on Kitana and Mileena's original story and cleared up the stuff that has become their story over the years that is mostly fan speculation from what little canon facts we had. MK komics were pretty good, except Kitana was more grown when Edenia was taken over. Its better if shes a baby. MK Legacy got it right.

KITANA is probably known across the realms BUT if someone had never met her in person and didnt know of MILEENA, then it would be very easy for Mileena to fool someone into thinking she is Kitana. Even if they were BOTH known across the realms, it would be easy to fool someone who'd never met them and had no way to tell them apart.
Who's to say that Kitana doesnt have the weird glowing eyes (from time to time) since i believe that Mileena could make her eyes appear normal if she wanted.
There would just be no way to really tell short of pulling her mask off and someone would really be risking DEATH by just bluntly doing that.

1) The only way to get Mileena out of the circle she was was retconing. As it was her only canon options were: a)get killed and probably getting resurrected in the next game b) get in a position of power and be overthrown. And her ending choices: replace Kitana (all the games except 2 and 3)
2) The bio says that to avoid the telling the new spoilers. On the other hand some of the endings of Arcade mode (like Kitana's) seen to work under the old timeline more or less
When I was a kid and i played Mortal Kombat Trilogy I just thought of jade Mileena and Kitana as the same girl different colour. And my friend Sophie thought like that before I got her into mortal kombat now she tells them apart so well maybe it's just people like me or my friend who don’t observe things to well first time around :> and to be honest in the MK9 story mode they start a fight about anything :\

In response to icebaby...
I've been saying this for a long time. Of course they don't look alike so I'm confused as to how people can't tell the difference between them. I have that MK poster with some of the cast standing around posing and Kitana and Mileena are standing next to each other. I keep trying to see whether they look the same in the eye area (excluding the eyes themselves for obvious reasons) and I still can't see any similarities. But ehh...it's whatever. Thanks for making this post about my two favorite video game siblings hahaha

It's not like it's hard to make it make sense. All you need is for Shang and Kahn to tell Kitana a convincing enough lie. And apparently they're pretty fucking good at lying to her what with it taking her ten thousand years to find out she's adopted.
"Y'know how our realm is filled with rebels and enemies to the throne? Well you had a twin sister, but one of them kidnapped her when you were little, and we never told you 'cause we thought she was dead, but we finally found her."
Honestly, that took me ten seconds.
And the reason people complain about the MK9 version isn't just because it's different from her MK2 story, it's because it's just plain not very good all on its own. There's no emotion, depth, or nuance to either the way the dialogue was written or Mileena's new personality, and Kitana doesn't even discover the truth on her own, Kahn just DECIDES TO TELL HER "Hey guess what, I'm not even your real dad!" for no good reason, because apparently he never liked Kitana. And WHY did he never want Kitana? Only because "bad guy has to be bad in every possible way, no way can we show Kahn like or care for or want to keep his stepdaughter. Loving your family isn't evil!" I'm sorry, but that's called bad writing. If you're gonna go to the trouble of having a story mode with cinematic cutscenes, then you should also at least bother to make the characters 3-dimensional, give the villains some positive traits and give the heroes some negative ones so they're not just bland action figures.

It would have been cool if they made Mileena actually favor Kitana, she could have her own unique costume and the shoulder length hair and still facially resemble Kitana, giving her a bit of a unique look. Her eyes tell you what she is already, they're just like Baraka's eyes, it defeats the purpose of her hiding behind her veil and "replacing" Kitana, hey eyes should have been brown like Kitana or she should have had cat-like hazel eyes or something less obvious.
She couldn't pass for Kitana in this timeline, at least not convincingly to the audience.
The one good thing about this retcon is that Mileena won't spend the next several games obsessing about Kitana, she's free to pursue her own goals and isn't anchored to Kitana for her reasons to return, I miss their rivalry as it was the most interesting sibling rivalry I've ever come across, but new options and new directions for both characters, especially Mileena.
Interesting thread.

In credit to Kitana, when she makes the remark in the Flesh Pits that her and Mileena look alike, she is sort of correct in saying that. In Mileena's alternate she could easily pass for Kitana if it wasn't for her eyes. It's just the difference in hairstyle when she first meets her sleeping (and the obvious Tarkatan teeth) that makes them look different.
