Kitana and Mileena... Seriously? - Long post -
I think it's kinda foolish how oblivious some people might be in this game when it comes to figuring out the differences between Mileena and Kitana.
Let me begin by showing you Kitana: (Note that I am only showing the models in which both characters have appeared in)
And now Mileena
Okay, okay... And another okay... I don't get how some people could get mixed up with these two characters.
EVEN SONYA IN THE SECOND MOVIE GETS CONFUSED!!! I'll go on a major tangent with that later on in my post.
First off, someone pointed this out in a different thread that makes Smoke get confused when confronting Jade about defeating "Kitana" when she was clearly battling Mileena.
A few things as i pointed out before:
A.) Why would Kitana suddenly go from princess to whatever kind of fashion you call Mileena's?
B.) If her attire is mostly a consistent color, why change it all of a sudden?
C.) Explain the different lengths of hair between the two, why would she cut her hair?
I don't get it, if they're supposed to be made identical, how is it that a huge major difference in color be THAT hard to not realize this isn't Kitana? If this has been explained throughout the story please, oh please, show me how people are this oblivious.
Not to mention, since they obviously gave personality to all of the characters, they could easily see that Kitana acting like a five year old on sugar-hyper mode is DEFINITELY Kitana right? Unbelievable.
Also, explain the changes of weapons. If Kitana holds on to her fans like it's her pride and joy, why would she change it? Could they also tell through the weapons they carry that this isn't Kitana that they're looking at?
Eyes are what I stare at most of the time when I am with my boyfriend (that or his butt... or his body himself *ahem*) If Mileena's eyes are supposed to be different, how can anyone not realize this? Mileena's hair is not in her face completely, but if you can see her eyes and realize that they're bright yellow/orange, exactly what would you do? Just sit there and not do anything or actually say, "Are you Kitana? What happened to your eyes?"
The color is a huge issue that I don't get. If everyone always sticks to one color and has been around everyone for a good long time to realize this, how can you not realize a change in color when you see Mileena posing as Kitana? You can't see that a change in color makes a big difference if, let's say, everyone just wears one color in this entire series though changes their appearance per adventure. You can't just make a character that's supposed to be one color and have another character impersonate that character but not wear the same color, just the same outfit. I get it that color defies a character in this game, but if you're going to make someone impersonate the other, for heaven's sake, make it look like it makes sense. Everyone just seems totally stupid when this happens.
Which now leads me to the biggest complaint I have with MKA. The movie itself already is a complaint, but honestly this scene pisses me off way more than anything else. You have Sonya who has been with Kitana up until they all split up. She has been with her long enough to know what she looks like, what color her attire is and what her face looks like.
HOW IN THE HOLY GRAIL DID SHE CONFUSE THE SO-CALLED "MILEENA" WHEN SHE IS WEARING A FUCKING MASK, TO KITANA?
Does that make sense?
Kitana
Mileena:
Kitana
Mileena:
How? How is this possible? How do you get this confused when you've been with Kitana throughout most of the adventure to KNOW what the hell she looks like.
What possible reason would she change shirts and put a fucking mask on and attack you? Why? What possible reason would there be for this to happen?
Despite that movie threw in so many characters they lost control of what each character really is in the game's series, still... They could have made this huge issue making sense if Mileena had a bigger role in the movie. But it didn't. And that scene couldn't have pissed me off more than any other scene in the movie.
Anyways, I hope you can see where I'm going with this. I want your thoughts. And I don't want to see "tl;dr" comments, I clearly warned you this is a long post.
Fuck!

It was a contrived attempted at putting in an extra gameplay segment into the game. I agree 100% that it didn't make any sense, and there were better ways to incorporate more fights into Jade's chapter.
Though the worst instance was, IMO, when Cyber-Sub took out Goro and Kintaro at the same time... by himself. If Sub was even remotely that powerful, five generic Lin Kuei cyborgs shouldn't have been an issue.

The answer is that all the MK characters are complete idiots.
Although in MKA the reason for Sonya confusing Mileena and Kitana is of service. Like OHAY MILEENA!!!1!
I never realized it Kitana and Mileena have the exact same outfit only in a different color from the second MK movie.

I usually wear black clothing. Its slimming and goes with my shoes. If I got a haircut and started wearing white instead of black people would still recognize me.
If Kitana got a haircut and started wearing pink, people would still recognize her as Kitana. According to the new canon everyone is unaware she has a twin. So say Smoke sees Mileena for the first time. He's going to think its Kitana and not some crazy psycho twin.

I do believe that when Smoke saw Mileena, her eyes were closed. That said, it was the stupidest fight in story mode. To me, Mileena's eyes are such a massive act of stupidity.... Why on earth did they give her those? Not only are they out of place, they actually make her look silly...

They try to make her look more intimidating with Tarkatan eyes
Yet it comes across as goofy. She'd be more menacing with regular eyes with black, or even dark brown coloring. She needed subdued eyes to make her half-monster side effective, instead, this game totally spilled the beans and Mileena completely fell flat. Yes, we knew she was a monster all along, but had the execution been taken more seriously, she could have made quite an impact. Instead, when we first see her face in story mode, this happens:
She looks all scary with her teeth(should not have been seen first...), then she opens her eyes and raises her eyebrows. The effect is underwhelming, and I actually giggled at how silly she looked. Her expression read "boo! I scared you. See?". The voice actress, however, does a spectacular job.
Another thing is that this game tried to distance her from Kitana(getting rid of the growing up together, killing Kitana, etc...) but still kept in the fact that everyone thinks they look exactly alike. Had they actually looked alike(as has been pointed out by this thread) the impact would have been greater once again.

I thought you were talking about people in reality. I'd have *facekeyboard*-ed instantly!
The mixing of Kitana and Mileena is a bit funny for the most part but people of Outworld could mix them after someone (e.g. Kahn) claims that Mileena is Kitana, they do have similarities after all. Outworld citizens would of course wonder and make their own theories on what made the changes to Kitana but Shao Kahn is a powerful person and people under his rule want to believe him (so is princess Kitana).

Only thing I could think of is that maybe they thought kitana was in disguise since she was turning on kahn, not sure why'd she would do that though...
I also think the fight with jade vs smoke is probably a different context than it is in game. It could've been as simple as jade smacking smoke upside the head with her staff and ending that confrontation right there but that wouldn't work to well with the gameplay so instead you fight lol. It's the same with other fights I don't think liu kang and kitana for example had a full on fight seeing that liu kang was basically playing with her or with jax vs johnny he probably just slugged johnny in the face in reality, he only had a black eye compared to the many things you do to him during the fight.

My biggest problem is that there a different skin tone, and even with there masks on they look nothing alike.
"She..She looks like...me!"
"NO. SHE. DOESNT."

This.
I was like, 'Really?'
And at the Smoke Part with Mileena, I felt that was so fake...

One can easily thrown in the "It's fiction. It's not supposed to make any sense!" card, but even in a fictional story, you can have a sense of logic. In the new MK game, it's one of many little things that show how much of an idiot plot the story is. When you have that kind of format for telling the story, you're going to have nonsensical things like that.

Well in MK II they looked alike, it doesn't have to be taken literally. although I did laugh out loud when Kitana brayed the "She looks like me" line during story mode.
Yeah the naked woman with scissor teeth sticking out and blood shot red eyes resembles you, she must have really low self esteem to believe that.

Well, a few things could be said here:
-Kitana and Mileena, other than the mouth are supposed to be identical
-Maybe MK warriors don't ALWAYS wear the same clothes or clothing color?
-Maybe MK warriors DO need haircuts?
Honestly if you put those 3 things together, than Smoke could've easily mistaken Mileena for Kitana. I mean, if some girls can change their looks once a year, why can't Kitana get a chance after 10,000?

When Smoke thought Mileena was Kitana, I was like "Jesus Christ Smoke! Really?" *Facepalm* Really, was that fight really necessary?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
The fact that you put it in quotations made me picture you standing there with Kitana saying it.
I however, am still confused as to why they changed Mileena to be younger than my 2 week nephew.

I good a good laugh at that part, and the part where Smoke thought that Mileena was Kitana. They don't resemble each other at all in this game. Ok, maybe in the forehead and body areas, but that's it. Is it me, or does Mileena look slightly tanner than Kitana?
Mistaking Kitana for Mileena in this game, is like mistaking Johnny Cage for Jax. What a joke, lol.
Okay, as much as I love MK2011, even the story mode, and Kitana and Mileena have a history of being "twins".... let's be honest, they don't look a thing alike.
Differences include: eye color (burning yellow eyes are a dead give-away), very short hair, different nose, different mouth, different skin color, different voice.
So... Kitana DOES look just like Mileena.... they both have boobs, right? And then they're different in every other way possible.
And then Smoke gets confused by who is who.
That's even more hilarious when you realize Smoke was the one that, somehow, realized that this man:
Was the same as this guy:
Apparently because they wore blue or something.
Personally, I think it was just miscommunication. I think they wrote the story with the typical "Kitana-Mileena" twin idea, then as they were making Mileena they decided to give her more originality, and by then they couldn't change the story and we end up with a Mileena that in no way, shape, or form could ever be mistaken for her "sister" unless the lights were off and you were groping her under the covers from the neck down....

First off:
Secondly, the answer is because the MK writers suck. That's all there is to it.
They simply can't come up with a plot that isn't some form of this: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdiotPlot

Honestly, I think most of you are making way too big a deal over nothing. Smoke mixing them up and confronting Jade is an excuse to play a Jade vs Smoke match and nothing more. Like someone already said, what "really happened" in the story is probably Jade giving him a good wack with the staff and that's it.
Unless you'd rather also think Raiden was trying to kill Sonya in Goro's lair, and Jax and Cage had the gloves completely off and were doing x-ray attacks on each other with Raiden standing right there.
Or for that matter, ANYONE taking anyone's x-ray move and not only not dying, but getting up for a 2nd round. It's a video game...there's always going to be a certain disconnect between the story being told and the actual gameplay.
At least in this game, Kitana and Mileena do look the same minus the eyes and hair....and we don't need sorcery or other silliness to explain a girl getting a haircut. And Smoke (who was probably itching for a fight after watching Sub-Zero get abducted) was still the only one fooled.
Meanwhile in Deception, Mileena fools Bo Rai Cho, Li Mei, and a whole freakin army that she's Kitana. And they don't look anything alike...besides the hair, Kitana is noticeably thicker than Mileena in the 3D games. Now that's ridiculous. At least in MK9 they share the exact same body model.
And yet, I've been lurking on this forum long enough to know that the 3D era is considered the HIGH point of MK storytelling by a lot of you. Go figure.

You know, Kitana only wears blue in the games because its her trademark and people would go apeshit if they changed that. But offscreen she could wear clothes of other colors. In the first games that looked like each other, in Deception most of people thought Mileena was dead and Mileena MKD model and Kitana DA werent created to be together which explains Armageddon. In MK9 up from the middle of the nose and down from the neck Mileena looks like a darker Kitana. Smoke didnt see the tarkatan eyes because, you know, unconsious and "blinded with dumb fury". Also in this game Mileena is like a year old or less and pretty much nobody knew of her and if she looked like Kitana (though darker) and she didnt have sisters it wouldnt be too farfetched assume that Mileena was a runaway Kitana maybe using magic to make herself look darker and with sais because she couldnt find her fans.
