I really liked his costume in MK vs. DC, which was kind of an interpretation of the "Young Shang Tsung" from the first MK comic book, which was also what his alternate costume in MKDA was, I think.
But I wouldn't want them to bring it back, and just recycle the MK vs. DC look.
I really liked the MK1 look, the old sorcerer Shang was always awesome, I wouldn't mind it as an alternate costume. But for his main, I'd say go with something in between MK2 and MK3, like RazorsEdge701 said, there's usually a flaw with every Shang costume. What I'd like to see is his MK2 costume, but without that silly hat, and just give him long hair like in MK3, or maybe even his face from MK vs. DC.
But I definitely miss Yellow clad Shang Tsung, so a reimagining of his MK2 outfit would be cool. Like I said, except without that hat.

My favorite look for Shang is his MK vs DC look. It has the regal feel of his MKDA/MKA primary, but the evilness of his MK3 look.

I could get down on old man Shang Tsung. He has been young for 8 games now.

Absolutely! I don't have a clue where anyone's coming from wanting to see him dressed like a Chinese peasant or a maskless ninja swap, but if there was a reason to dislike the red robe, it was the bizarre bulky mid-section.
If they're going to give him the regal robe look he deserves, it'd be nice to see some decent fabric textures. That thing was really bizarre.
The thought occurs that they're still sticking on strange and artless moulded pieces of plastic onto characters in MK2011with a really bulky and unelaborate Sektor, weird black stuff on Scorpion's chest...

It is called armor. Han dinasty is the closest style which describes it, but even then it is a large bit nondescript.
I am thoroughly biased for the MKDA look, which is the only time Shang actually looked chinese aside rfom MK1. In MK2 he looked like a Malaysian or a man from Indo-China. The clothes were fitting though except wit the whole barechested thing which is thoroughly stupid if you have those suspensors.
MK3 is a fucking atrocity and whoever designed needs a shot of baseball right into the creative lobe. WHY, WHY mix wrestling spandex and the Undertakers hair on a white man, who has cheap drawn facial hair and the makeup from a KISS junkie?
MK vs DC harkened back to MK2 with more clothing and sadly, more white man from America. The problem is twofold: Shang needs to look regal, which is exactly what his MKDA costumes were about, and second: it has to look chinese. NO PLASTIC high tech parts.
One of the things that irritate me is that the fighters wear no protection for mortal outcome battles, even with hand to hand combat. Shang managed to disprove me, but yes, they did overdo some bling on the torso.

Either old man Shang or something close to his MKDC look. Though younger and please no ponytail! If it's the old man Shang Tsung though I really hope when you get your power bar up he can throw 5 fireballs like in the original.

I prefer the MK1 look, The Ancient Shang Tsung living through nine mortal kombats. But it would be cool if you can start out with a mk3 Shang Tsung and as he gets beaten up he loses his souls and grows old. I hope they bring his morphs back!
Okay, don't kill me for this, but my favorite is his movie costume (who doesn't love Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa?).
However, of his video game costumes, I prefer his MK:DA main costume.
His original costume was too old. His MKII and MK3 costumes were too weird (suspenders and yellow spandex just don't fit him, in my personal opinion). His MKvDCU costume just didn't feel regal enough. I really liked his MK:DA costume.

I don't. It's not Shang Tsung unless he has a goatee. What kind of ass can't be bothered to grow facial hair? And I know some Asian men can't, but he ain't one of them, I have SEEN him with a beard before.
I know it sounds so silly and petty...I can handle Kitana being at the tournament, I can handle Reptile being a gecko in a statue or whatever, it's the goatee that sends me off the edge? But for whatever reason, I don't know why, it is seriously my biggest pet peeve about the film. Probably because it doesn't seem like it was a deliberate artistic or writing choice someone made, it just seems lazy and nothing else. Y'know, there are some things where you can use the excuse "well not everything that works in a game works on film." A dude's beard isn't one of them. So I've been bitter about that since I was like 12 years old.

It's called plastic looking bullshit and a heckuva stretch to justify it!
Decent fabric textures and a little referencial design would go along way.
At least the red robes of MKDA (and MKA) fared better than the action figure plastic of a plain purple aged Shang Tsung.
Even though I like his part 3 look the best the MK vs DC look was pretty good too although I don't want a pony tail, and even though someone else disagrees I'd like to have him with the black face paint with the all white eyes. One of my biggest gripes with him is the stance they put him in, I'd rather he had something a little more normal looking. I like his MKvDC stance better than his old ones though. Maybe if they found a way to make him look like a younger version of the MK vs DCU with his hair let out and the all white eyes.

How would you handle the movie costume but with a goatee?

I personally think his best look is from MK: DA, just remove the chestplate. His alt in the game looked too... akward, so keep with the main.

I like all his looks that he's had but my fav would be his MK3.
