Liu Kang had no ties with this "Monk" he was fighting. It was just a match to start it off. Liu Kang came out on top, and the "monk"'s soul was taken from him as punishment for loss, also giving an example to anybody watching of his power. Hakim Alston would have made a great double inside the suit of Sektor, or any other of the robots. Maybe the Mortal Kombat: Devastation movie will have featured the missing robot, Sektor. And since sektor don't do nothing but shoot bombs at shit, I'm expecting alot of shit to be blown up. But Hakim Alston would make a great inside body piece to him, as he is a great martial artist.

The man Liu Kang fought in his first round of MK was a monk from Outworld. They wouldnt have two people from Earth realm fight. That would defeat the purpose of Mortal Kombat.
