Money my dear boy.
Given, this is but a conceptual plan, and the endproduct might as well displease all of us. However it will bring in money. And what post-Midway MK team needs is dimension. In any way. IF this project is critically panned but grosses high enough they will have something to fall back on, and still won't go bankrupt. And that is what Revenge of the Fallen is all about. Money. And boobs, but thankfully Megan Fox has been booted off.

What would any of us as fans have to gain by encouraging "make something that sucks just because it makes more money"?

Hence the issue with every franchise ever created. All of them have something to show that the fans aren't proud of.
I'm all abuot the lulz. Guess what, this could be interesting: as Baraka is now Dr. Alan Zane, I did a quick search and, ....get this: he really exists.

Ear, nose and throat specialist. Not exactly a plastic surgeon, but a tracheotomist is fine too. Question is, is he gonna sue? Imagine if people were to go to him after watching the movie.

I need a new sig, something with Kabal from UMK3 would be sweet. Just imagine that here

I think this would be a successful film if it were actually made. But as far as reboots (or "reimaginings") go, id rather see them go back to what made the first two games great. That is to say I think it wouldn't be a bad idea if they made the new mortal kombat in the style of an old kung fu epic.

You know what my preference would be? Hero had a very epic and continuous storyline. This can be done with MK if you take the basic premise and surplant it into a much more darker setting. MK1-2 is essentially a hero's epic, bit similar to Japanese stories (multiple individuals and episodic in nature).
And brutality. MK should not really show gore. Do not do it. Imply it. That is alot more effective. Also being a heroes epic, but not within the sense of the west.
A hero is not heroic. In my truest vision: Liu Kang is a determined shaolin monk hell bent for the murder of Shang Tsung, because someone has to do it. Sonya is obsessive over catching Kano, wouldn't mind having her in some psychotic scenes which would imply to what lenghts she would go. Johnny Cage could adhere to the westerner hero sense. Snobby bastard rising up to the challenge and valuing his and others lives. The others need no introduction, but PLEASE remove Raiden as the mentor figure. It would serve no purpose with such protagonists. Scorpion, Kano, Sub-Zero are given being bastards.

ZOMFG! THIS IS NOT MORTAL KOMBAT! IF THIS IS FOR THE GAME, I'M GOING TO KILL EVERYONE ON EARTH BECAUSE I'M NOT GETTING MY WAY!
Haha. Like I said before, I have no problem if people hate this video if they have a good reason and some people in this thread do have a few reasons why they don't like it, and that's fine. But I also see some people saying they hate it because they just want to bitch and cry, and to the people who do that, I say give it a damn chance. Yes I know, you want to see magic, but who knows? Maybe there is magic in the game... or movie... or whatever the hell it is. We did not see much of it, so don't say you hate it or your child has been raped just yet. And if it does not have magic, you can go back to cutting yourself.
BTW, don't say "I'M AN OLD SCHOOL FAN AND THIS SUCKS", because I too is an school fan who played the old Mortal Kombat games for hours and hours and hours... and hours. I like what they have done, I find it to be mind blowing, and besides, we don't even know if this is going to be made into a movie, so there is no need to go insane now...
I can't wait until E3. People are going to be saying it's great and then some are going to say it sucks, and I'm going to get some popcorn and enjoy the e-fight.

Statement: those thrilled by the prospect of unrelated materials packaged with the MK name, logo, and trademarks have absolutely no awareness for how unbelieveably stupid they are.
Shame on me for not expecting a contemporary "realistic and mature" version of the same moronic crap that's plagued the fanbase for this long. I really didn't think there was a discussion to be had here, but lo and behold, we've upgraded from whining about wanting the palette swap characters back -- to being a gelatenous glut of easily distracted stupid. Bravo!
Someone is actually attacking THE NINETIES on the back of this blood spattered, metal inserted schlock fest?! Holy crap! Nothing like a lack of perspective to make something look fun. This is nineties to a T, granted, with some pretty new filters and a bigger budget and less sense of humor than their Troma predecessors. Yeesh!
Getting a city involved? Fair enough! Injecting some new urban characters into the mix? Also reasonable. Completely ignoring everything that's come before it to diddle in cinema du shite so some shut-in maladjusted horror fans and easily amused kids trolling gaming sites can spend seven minutes getting off on being naughty while the parents are out?! Please!
The fact that realism and maturity keep getting misappropriated by this is laughable. This is the cultural continuation of the same wankery that's being attacked by some, with all the stupid of being a complete departure from maintenance of an IP. Fortunately, though there may be a vocal swell for a very finely produced seven minute clip free on YouTube, Warner Brothers are probably smart enough to differentiate between the sustained mass market value of a once very mainstream property, and the comparatively miniscule R18+ movie market which probably translates even less to video games. Those Saw games aren't exactly setting the NPDs on fire.
And of course it's being compared to Saw. Is that entirely fair? Well, probably not. Saw was motivated by an idea, has maintained it's franchise quite appropriately over a shocking seven films (plus other material), and was predicated by a very specific high concept. So, being led by our noses to something some of the least admirable MK fans have always had a fetish for... probably not a fair thing to attribute to those guys making the Saw movies.
As a side note of personal interest, I don't know where people are assuming Batman was some how radically reinvented for the recent films. That's what Batman always was. That's actually a damning counter example to what supporters of this unrecognisable crime horror version of MK are claiming. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight took what comics fans always knew was there and adapted it with manipulation of only the most minute details. The Batman films could've gone much further with their contortions, but delivered a pastiche of some of the very best Batman work the comics have seen. The source material. They were a departure from the shite films that accidentally got made in those fabled mid-nineties by people who thought it was a good idea to do something different, but for the source material, they were an overdue reflection.
Mortal Kombat runs the absolute gamut of fictional premise.
The ideas being expressed in this video are not so exclusively removed that they couldn't be inserted into the MK universe, but they should not be done so at the cost of cultural and markettable identity.
Thumbs up from 10,000 global YouTube users does not translate into an intelligent or well considered direction forward for the MK franchise. It does not validate a chilidish and arbitrary reinvention of an established brand with the barest of touchstones. It certainly does not translate into tickets for an R18+ cinema screening.
The conversation is moronic. As a freebie short film on the internet, it's a lot of fun. So was Batman: Dead End and all those other demo reels and fan vids that have followed. This one clearly isn't the way forward. Don't be stupid.
I've used a lot of words here, so like the actual MK story, I'm hoping you'll all lose interest in the subject now and resume being ignorant and dreadfully under exposed.

So people are stupid for having a different taste than you? Check. It's not okay for Mortal Kombat to attempt to drastically change to attract a bigger fanbase and that it must always stay the same? Same could be said for a lot of the subpar characters introduced in Deadly Alliance through Armagedon as unrelated materials packaged with the MK name, logo and trademarks.

I see Jax Briggs, I see Sonya Blade, I see Shang Tsung, I see Hanzo Hasashi as well as mention of the Shirai Ryu, I see mention of a tournament where warriors go to battle each other, and I see a deadly hatred between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Check, check, check, check, check, check and check. That's seven major things in a seven minute trailer that's only purpose is to attract money for a project that essentially is meant to regain interest in Mortal Kombat and could very well possibly change every point of its aspect by the time it begins filming.

I seem to remember a time when Batman successfully reinvented itself in the late 80s and then came back with a P.O.S. that almost had nothing to do with a lot of its characters source material. It's called Batman Returns.

Better than those same YouTube users damning the project because of it being Mortal Kombat and the fact that the majority of the gaming public seems to be in agreement that Mortal Kombat is pretty much now a stale relic. And also, the video is now at 950, 595 views since two days ago. Pretty astonishing for a franchise that was thought to be outliving its welcome. Seems like it's gaining a lot of positive interest from that almost million something viewers, along with IGN, Kotaku, CHUD, ShockTillYouDrop...ext, ext, ext.

I think you're confusing a viable demographic with this.
Good response, though. Some great intelligent points about creative direction and overall, just a very nice mature and realistic tone to your post. Just the kind of poster revamp we've been needing!

Seriously?... It's obviously an aesthetic descriptor, as much as a reference to lazily piled blood bags around a refrigerator.
Maybe it's an age thing? If this looks like MK to you, I really have to wonder what kids saw when they were playing MK1 and beyond! Maybe red blobs look like actual gore when you have to tippy-toe to see the arcade cabinet.
Perceptions of what the violence meant to MK have always been pretty skewed toward the maladjusted, for some, I suppose. Describing this as anything similar to what Mortal Kombat has actually ever been like, is just wrong. False. Incorrect. Sorry, chief.

Mick, stop beating around the bush. Say I am stupid for this.
You could accuse this segment to be the brainchild of the 90's. Evil guy in the suit? check. Violence? check. Visually? Full nineties. So is the new Batman movies which are overrated pieces of overburdened acting from Bale. Hell Clooney was more stylish in some places than him...
Tell me (and I am hoping I am right ) when did you see an action thriller in the 90's (by the 90's I mean the radical age of 1985-1990's irst part, up until, let us say, Se7en in this case) that dared to bring harlequin-type ichtyosis, realistic beheading shot, distrubed self-mutilating individuals to the screen? Paired with not made-up martial artspoiltation and actual martial artists?
I -and only I a I know it- see a rare opportunity here. Raw violence paired with disturbing imagery (this is oh-so much far from hammer-films and the 80's horror, or the overly symbolic fridge horrors of the late 90's ). Add the fact that it bears MK as it's name. I like it. I like this as it is for now more than the Mortal Kombat I have been subjected to from 1993.
Why am I stupid for liking something that is appealing to me, and bears the MK logo?

Check, check, check, check, check, check and check.
... People who actually put their name on sentiments like those are stupid.
I really think we're getting distracted by the being impatiently called stupid, and not dwelling enough on the reason you're stupid. Let's focus, people. A little healthy reflection, eh?
And I think people who can't accept change and calling people stupid for having their God-given opinion need to grow up. We'll agree to disagree.

I was just thinking that. "I think it would be great if the movie starts very realistic and down to earth, with murder cases being investigated, and once they get to the Tournament, they get plunged into a world of the obscure, bizzare and mystic."
Agreed entirely.
The video is an interesting take on the series. I love the inclusion of characters often skipped over when talking about the series.
