As far as Sonya goes though, its a different universe. Not saying that she wont be doing the odd bit of hand to hand(She does get her ass kicked by The Rock in Star Trek Voyager) but both Jax and Sonya send out Scorpion to do their dirty work so chances are both of them aren't going to be heavily involved in fighting.

But that's the thing, how does telling us about the origins of the Rebirth trailer encompass the characters we "know and love"? The press release made this series feel like a pure promotional tool for the game, setting up the characters that are found in the game. So wtf?

Cant argue with that really but that is just promotional BS. Of course they are going to say this "Rebirth" Universe is going to tie in with the "Reboot" Universe.

Its going to be one of those things you watch rather than speculate really. Because the original trailer was far away from Comic Book and that has been what MK is all about.

But then again there could be an obscure link between Sonya in Rebirth and Sonya in Reboot. This is MK.

I'm talking about when the series is actually shown. There could be an obscure link between each character from the two universes.

I mean based on the short-
Baraka has his head decapitation fatality and blades in his arms.
Scorpion has his spear and seems to be undead.
Reptile tears the heads off his enemies and eats them.
Johnny Cage is a (failed) movie star and buddies up to his fellow American characters.
Shang Tsung organises the Mortal Kombat tourney and as a mob boss could "own a man's soul". I nicked that from someone.
Sub Zero - I dunno with this one.

Jax and Sonya seem to to be in a position of police authority and thats it based on the 10 minute trailer/teaser/whatever. And you dont need me to tell you what they are like in the games.

I mean just guessing.
Kintaro - Large Japanese Man wearing a Tiger pattern suit, bodyguard of Shang Tsung.
Kitana - Fan dancer/glamour model said to be as beautiful as a princess.
Mileena - Got into trouble with mob bosses (debts/drugs?) pissed off at her twin sister. Said to be able to give you a blowjob from hell.
Liu Kang - current champion of Mortal Kombat. He fights for Shang Tsung for unknown reasons.
Kano - Mob boss / collector of expensive knives. Possible grudge against Jax and Sonya. or vice versa

Stuff like that. Ultimately that could be all that links the two Sonyas. Blond, busty, in a position of police authority and a bit of a bitch.

Hey, I don't know if you guys have seen this or not, but, Jeri is constantly sharing exclusive pictures of her work in the MK Rebirth set and there are a few new articles about her+MK as well:

Apparently all of this took place while shooting in a "haunted mental institution" (confirmed by her). That comment she posted on twitter kind of pushes for confirmation that this series might be closer to the rebirth concept and not the games.

A "haunted" insane asylum, eh?

Well...that just lends more credence to the theory I've had for a little while now that Tancharoen's plan to explain how Baraka, Reptile, etc. are humans instead of Outworlders and the magic is "demonic" instead of "asian mysticism" will be that Outworld is more like Hell and the villains are all possessed by evil spirits. How original. And by "original", I mean the same as every horror movie ever.

Hopefully we are wrong. Lets remember that this might be a special chapter featuring Sonya and the Black Dragon (Kano), in which case an inside asylum makes sense and it wouldn't mean change much of the original story that we know and love.

Wait...how does an insane asylum make sense for Kano or the Black Dragon? I dunno, Kabal maybe I could see going nuts after his face gets torn up, considering the way he dresses and wears his hair makes him look like a ragged, unhinged homeless person...but Kano?

Why would you change the one guy who's already a human gangster's backstory in a series about gritty street crime stuff?

It was just a random example. For all we know they could just throw Kano in there for examination or whatever. Like I said random example.

Those pics could be anything (granted, they seem to be indicating for towards the "gritty street crime stuff" than the "supernatural Elder gods tournament".

Someone just posted something that maybe indicates Sindel is in. I'm curious to see what that's all about.

Well, the way I see it, given how the short had her and Jax involved with handling guys like Reptile, Baraka, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, I doubt Sonya's story will be limited to "she's after Kano" and she could be in that asylum for any character in the game because they're all basically human criminals now.

But, has it been confirmed that this series will indeed be exactly like the rebirth trailer?

There's a (small) chance that it might adapt the original storyline...no?

Eh, I guess it could happen, but setting up some other character's origin story strikes me as more likely. Like maybe the asylum is where the Rebirth version of Mileena lives. She'd certainly fit in at a mental hospital and being an Outworld character in the games means the "haunted" part fits too.

It's very plausible that the shoot location itself is known locally to be "haunted", but that fact has nothing to do with the actual story, and the place is being used just because it looks dirty and abandoned.
