^Great tips Mick-Lucifer! I also don't understand why you would enter the same combatant twice, unless they were drastically changed...If I enter again, I'll enter a completely new combatant (despite how much I love Lorsid)...afterall, creating the character is part of the fun!

I tried to keep to the serious side of the MK universe. I also kept my characters story style close to what nearly every character involved in the MK tournament was fighting for. Which was revenge in any shape or form.
Yes it's same old, but revenge has always been a driven factor in the MK stories. Johnny Cage is the only character that is not in this format while being oblivious to what he is really fighting for lol.
I also tried to keep my story simple and not overload anyone that read it. But it is hard to write something that half the people want and half the people don't want. It's hard to please everyone.
I also tried to promote my character. I was probably doing this more than most, but I really wanted to tell everything about my character and try to fill in the gaps that people wanted (or I thought they wanted) to know.
Yes I took this competition seriously. It was my first one and I joined this site just to enter into it. So I come into it thinking everyone would be taking it as serious as me, which is why I was acting like a hard ass.
But never mind ay...

I've thought about introducing another character who furthers my Annette's story to give the character a firm foundation. I don't know how much anyone read into it, but I intended Annette's ending to tie in with the fact that the futures of so many of the current MK characters are up in the air. It is intended to firmly root her in the plot of the potential sequel to this game... So I think it would be quite easy to build upon my story AND keep it heavily tied in to the MK story...
But, I've also thought of starting completely from scratch with a character whose story follows the aftermath of MK 2011. Specifically the death of a certain queen...
Decisions, decisions! It's harder the second time.
Personally, I'd like to see some of the better entries this time around be continued next time. I don't want to see the same exact character though, I want it to be the continuatin of their story. What happens next... Specifically Onyx whose story can be built upon rather well.
Even the movelists I would want to see changed up a little bit. Rework some of the less interesting special moves to be as good a the others if that is the case, etc....

I take requests for reviews and speaking of which I would like someone to offer thoughts on my alternative costume for Deon, aside from Daryui, nobody has payed it any attention, please take the time out to offer an opinon whether you like it or not, thank you.

My review of De Kai and De Kio for zerosebaz( I apologize for the delay buddy, but here it is for you).
Bio: Very interesting dynamics of this being's soul, the explanation of De Kai and De Kio was well explained. I also found them moving from a neutral balance of light and darkness to a fighter that takes a stand a nice touch, curious as to him his masters are, perhaps you left that out to leave some mystery for De Kai and De Kio.
Fighting style: A very through walk through that gives us a suitable picture of how they play and the general gameplay section is something I have yet to see with any character, you took the gameplay and fighting style section and kicked it up a notch, I'm impressed.
costumes: I like the original elements like each one having a portion of yin yang tatoo and each one having only one earring in their ear, my only issue with the descriptions was the reliance on the reader having played certain games or seen certain clothing (like the Elder God's Armageddon attire).
Special moves: Explanations are good and it's a mixed of offensive and defensive tools and their alternating abilities seem like they work well enough
X-ray: Decent and I liked the explanation of just how much damage it takes away.
Fatalities: Nice that each one gets their own and is more befitting of their dark and or light nature, I emjoyed the variation
(p.s. you speak/write wonderful English)
Taunts: Interesting to say the least, the variation between the two works well and I like the attention to detail.
Ending: Is great because it brings the character full circle and leaves me wondering what new entity De Kai and De Kio will become.
Overall I think this is a good character, though some fine tuning in his bio, clothing descriptions, and an explanation of who is masters are and how De Kai and De Kio came to be divided into two bodies would boost them up and giving them a conneciton to more characters could really help them benefit and grow
This is such an original and delightful character, some minor missing details could really boost this character up and some minor tweaks, but I love your ideas and in depth gameplay descriptions, you put a ton of thought and effort into this creation and it shows.
I hope my review was helpful take care.

anyways tbh i don't like it. I think the one that you submitted was WAAAAY better, it looked like he actual was in a secret society
This one doesn't seem like that, it reminds me of a guy just dressed to play some basketball at the park
like i think Daryui said, its the program not you. Thats why i didn't do Serenity on heromachine but on SC4

Monkey breath (Khibok) and I are duking it out tomorrow as well. It's rare to have a round where all opponents have been very active on the boards.
Hearts will break.
(Internet) friendships will end.
Can you feel the drama?
@Espio... did you put a Star Trek insignia on Deon? +300000 points!
I like the cop/army feel to Deon with your HM design, but I'm not sure if it fits in with his background as mystical warrior. You probably couldn't do anything about it, but the Nike-esque running shoes look way out of place. I think you should keep the hoodie aspect from your earlier design, to make him modern and yet wizard-like at the same time.
Really, I'd say go back to the drawing board and work on the Order of Finch angle and then write up a detailed physical description; from there, I'm sure someone would give you a picture of Deon.

I will have a detailed review up sometime Thrusday for you on Serenity.
Thank you for your honesty, I've looked at it several times now and I think you're right, although my intent was to make Deon look more "official", he looks too much copish up top. I'm pleased you liked his original look though:)
Oh and the shoes, I see your point, it was the least awkward looking of the shoes available, but it still looks clunky and like you said, like he's "going to play basketball". I'm starting to dislike them myself with that costume.
Serenity does look great on Soul Calibur 4, since I got payed today, I think I'm going to go get Soul Calibur 4, that was my first choice for redesiging Deon on their program.

I guess that's what it is lol, It was the best looking representation of Deon's amulet I could find .
Thanks, I was trying to make this alternative looks his "I'm on missions for the Order look" as a change of pace.
I agree on the shoes, they're kind of ehh on the costume, I thought the other shoe options looks bad as well on him and those shoes do look awkward and out of place.
I appreciate your honesty and I'm glad you liked my original design, I'll probably do some edits on Soul Calibur 4 that are more true to his original design and I'm going to make a radically different look for him as well
I would love to see someone's interpretation of him, but I don't want to impose on anybody as most artists are probably busy with their stuff and I feel bad asking, but I'd love to see it.

and might as well take care of all business here lol

Pretty disrespectful if you ask me :P lol jk..Hope I didnt miss it, cuz your reviews are awesome. As for that new Deon look...wasnt really a fan. I also think the first look was more fitting, and it actually made the Order of the Finch thing seem legit...I dont really know why. And as another person that used HeroMachine..I think anyone that has theri own artwork or did not used it had a better shot of moving on. I think I would use it as more of a springboard for ideas than anything else.

I would encourage everyone to try something different for the next time.
I think a fair criticism of a wide assortment of the 2011 entries is that they're needlessly overwritten and self-indulgent. Making a project of a single character over several years probably isn't going to help that, assuming the next contest is a year away.
It would probably struggle to win the crowd vote, but I was disappointed not to see more characters getting back to basics, grounding themselves in a simple, single premise. It's a tough ask to introduce a character into an existing heirarchy with too much or too little info -- it's that balance that a lot of characters were lacking.
Without wanting to kick that particular hornet's nest, I think this is the moral people should take away from Krustacean's shortlived successes. We all know that joke characters aren't the aim of the game, but there comes a point where a choice between implausibilities will favour the knowingly and delightfully absurd over presumptuous additions to the canon, and other unnatural and serious designs.
Based on this year's contest, I think there is still a lot of margin for working within the parameters set by MK, whilst looking at what archetypes it lacks. For my tastes, I would've enjoyed seeing some more attempts to approach it from the pop oriented, comic book/martial arts influences that gave us the original broad strokes of characters who were built on. Granted, that hasn't been done to great effect in recent editions of the games, but it's where the best characters started.
Of course, I would stress that this is a bit of discussion, food for thought, and not a platinum measure of judgment. It certainly doesn't represent the opinions of the other judges, or any strict prejudice against characters.
I would add that I think creating new characters for the next contest will both keep it fresh for frequent observers, and represent the challenges and strengths of the genre and medium. Fighting games are generally a serialized format, which always benefits from the barod accumulation of interesting, vivid characters.
Creating new concepts plays to that nature and will give you a chance to play around with new things and see what might work. Of course, again, by that very nature, returning characters are also very welcome.

It'd get pretty boring pretty fast if it were the same overwrought characters year after year, yeah. I think there's a lot of fun in bringing them back and it's very natural to the gaming sub-genre, but in a contest like this, you're probably better off if you can make a return be a novelty of some sort. At least so far as back-to-back years go.
Limiting the number of returns to that few, with the best characters in mind, is probably a civil judgment call that just won't happen. To me, that could be the difference between a winning character and more clumsy fan-fic, but I'm certainly not the 'coliseum' vote. It's just more food for thought.

I'll definitely be entering a different character next time. Krustacean was a novelty and I feel overexposing him would be a detraction. Also, I've got a bunch of characters from (ugh) a piece of fanfiction I'm working on. Kind of Earthrealm's B-Team during the MK3 portion of the story. I refuse to believe Shao Kahn only came in attacking/invading a single city, so they're Fuujin's team.

A heckuva lot depends on execution, but that strikes me as a very good place to look to put a character. Earthrealm has really been shockingly neglected, in the games, and in the contest. Getting back to basics, painting a character with broad (human) strokes, and suturing it into the story naturally with as soft and plausible a reference as that is great!
We wouldn't want every character to occupy that space, but it's a more palatable starting point than haphazard encounters with Quan Chi, or establishing unlikely and presumptuous familial/heirarchal relationships over existing characters. Granted, that last part is a much harsher rule for a fan contest than it would be in an actual game, though still applicable.
Contemporary figures (characters whose relevance is recent, or current) is another big thing that I felt was somewhat lacking. Yes, the MK fiction affords you a lot of opportunity to deal with fantastical and longlived figures, but that tends to have been used to cheat seniority, rather than make use of any actual reason for it. Tangential to that -- characters who can answer simple questions about themselves are a big plus, too. It'd be nice to see actual, direct answers in character bios, with any additional context/subtext implied in the bio, or ending. Much like "real" characters.

Mu local stores were sold out, now I gotta order off Amazon, disappointing, but that game will be worth it, I've been meaning to get it anyway, the creation feature is just a glorious bonus.

@ICEgrenade: I would love to see the SC4 version of Serenity, I dont think I have.
@Ab_Horrence: That updated version of Yaray in your sig looks incredible, is the full pic posted anywhere? He's still one of my favs, cant wait to see how far he goes
and might as well take care of all business here lol
@Espio..So you spank me in our match up and you still cant even give me a review on Shiku that I asked for a while back? Pretty disrespectful if you ask me :P lol jk..Hope I didnt miss it, cuz your reviews are awesome. As for that new Deon look...wasnt really a fan. I also think the first look was more fitting, and it actually made the Order of the Finch thing seem legit...I dont really know why. And as another person that used HeroMachine..I think anyone that has theri own artwork or did not used it had a better shot of moving on. I think I would use it as more of a springboard for ideas than anything else.

Shiku
I will try to have yours on Thrusday as well.
Oh and thanks I try to be as through as possible
You know what? All these preferences for the original look is great news, I was doubting myself and my design choice which is why I made a redesign, but if people are liking his main much better, it's great news, I personally preferred the main as well.
Thank you for giving me straightforward feedback., Heromachine does seem like it's more suitable for a starting point as opposed to an ending point for a character, thanks so much:)
Sorry to gatecrash any conversation that was going on here guys. I just wanted to address a comment made about my character in the voting thread, which I felt would be more appropriate to continue in here so as not to litter the votes.
Okay, so like I said in the voting thread, I'm not trying to bash your opinion or even change it, as it is yours and you are completely entitled to it.
All I want to do is explain Casilde a little more in depth so as to clear up any confusion with Nitara that you, or anyone else may have.
Casilde is basically a spanish woman thats body has been taken over by a wendigo. The way I have it worked out is that the vampire race which now reside in Outworld are descendants of these Wendigo demons, which are actual mythilogical creatures, not something I made up.
In my intepretaion of this creature, they are basically the first vampires, they are more demonic, powerrful and deadly than an average vampire, aswell as slightly more wolflike, (hence her howling). For instance as opposed to having to bite a victim and drain the blood, they can summon it from someone without even touching them. They also absorb the blood through their skin, not just orally. (Something Skarlet had not been revealed to also do when i came up with the concept).
These Wendigo's became near extinct, from both dying out and being banished by an outworld tribe (enter the male character featured in Casildes ending, a tribesman that may appear in next years contest). The vampires of Nitara's time are basically weaker, less powerful descendants of the Wendigo's.
When Casilde's body was inhabited by the spirit of a wendigo she basically becomes and unwilling vampire. She's still essentially good and fights throughout the invasion to free her homeland, but the spirit is slowly corrupting her, and once Nitara learns of her existance she begins to hunt her so as to force a complete transformation of Casilde into a wendigo. Since the Wendigo's are so much more powerful, the hope is that she can help seperate Nitara's realm from Outworld. However this is only hinted at in the ending, and there is nothing to say that this actually plays out, she could very well be cleansed of this spirit by the tribesman. I also like to think of her and Nitara being great rivals, as Casilde wants nothing more than to get back to her human self.
Appearance wise, I can see how her primary may appear similar to Nitara for you, but it's all just colour schemes. She covers much more skin than Nitara and the style, in my opinion is very different. When I chose the colour scheme I was trying to evoke her spanish heritage, and the corset style is all stemming from her job as a dancer in a sleazy bar, (think of a Sucker Punch type club)
As for the alternate, I don't see Nitara in that at all, if anything its the result of an uncomfortable threeway between Sheeva, Motaro and Dracula.
bbfreak328, I really don't want to seem like I'm ranting at you or patronising you by breaking her story down so much. If anything I hope this will enlighten everyone to the full picture of Casilde's story. I have seen various users on her post extra info about their characters and I guess I've take your comment as a trigger for me doing the same.
I appreciate your opinion as your own, I just felt that the comment you made, implying that Casilde basically is just a cheap Nitara knock-off, was unfair. I don't want to dwell on it anymore, so no hard feelings. I just feel very protective of my character as I'm sure you do, and will defend her to the bitter end
Thanks to everyone that's been voting my girl through, it really does mean alot, some of these entries are amazing, and I'm truly suprised to see mine get this far. The creators of Nyctaro, Fu Lei and Merrick have all done a helluva job on some great characters, and battling against them has been both fun and nerve-wracking!
