Sonya, on the other hand, has always been solid in terms of gameplay and purpose. She's always been fun to play but she's been consistently great in the last 3 games. Her MK9 appearance was an absolute disaster, but it's good to see they've fixed their mistakes with MKX. She gets my vote.
Dont particularly like either but Kabal gets my vote here.

Sonya has been one of my favorites in each of the last two games. Her Covert Ops variation is awesome. I feel like she's been s bit underrated in this series and might not get the same fan love as other classic characters, but to me, she's been great for a long time.
I will say though that her stories haven't been among the best, so that drops her down a little. At times, she seems stubborn, which tends to get annoying.
As for Kabal, he was the only newcomer in original MK3 that I liked. Love the hook swords and his combo potential, and I feel like he's always among my favorites but he's slipped a bit.
His move list never seems to evolve much and his story never seems to be nearly as cool as his look. As much as I loved him in MK3, I hated him in MKD and was kinda "meh" on him in MK9.
I'll be more than happy with either advancing, but I'm going with Sonya here, much to my own surprise.
Kabal has a cool look (or at least he did before MK9) but his gameplay has never appealed to me and his story is a clusterfuck. In the old timeline he flip-flopped and was directionless, and in the new he's retconned to be a cop sidekick and gets magical powers for some reason. Weak.
Sonya, on the other hand, has always been solid in terms of gameplay and purpose. She's always been fun to play but she's been consistently great in the last 3 games. Her MK9 appearance was an absolute disaster, but it's good to see they've fixed their mistakes with MKX. She gets my vote.
This. I didn't mind the former criminal turns into a cop story, but super speed being a residual effect of Shang Tsung's magic? That's a bit weird.
Anyway I gotta go with my boy Kabal. he has been a favorite of mine since MK3, I instantly fell in love with his mask and hookswords back in the day.
I get most people view this as a popularity contest but it should be looked at as who will win in a deathmatch?
Actually, the rules state : Criteria for voting is completely up to you, but as this is an annual event, we recommend focusing primarily on the current versions of characters seen in Mortal Kombat X! [Note: We always suggest voting for characters, rather than against them.]
Some people vote for their favorites or who they hate the least. Others look at who would win in a match. I personally look at their overall importance within the current timeline during MKX and if it's not possible I reflect upon their stories and who has more impact.
I voted Takeda over Reptile because Reptile hasn't evolved much since he debuted while Takeda was a great newcomer with a cool weapon.
I voted Rain over Shao Kahn because Shao Kahn has been watered down a bit in MKX when it was revealed Shinnok orchestrated the events of MK9 and manipulated Kahn while Rain is alive and well in MKX, making the plan to steal the amulet to destroy both Mileena and Kotal.
It's really up tp you how you vote. In the end whoever gets more support for whatever reason wins, and that's the point.
I will rock you.
Plus Sonya is MK's first female, so she's our Chun-Li. I'd vote for her on that reason alone.

A grudge match from an untold past! Kobra is a martial artist who lives for the rush of the fight, and the thrill of the kill. His lust for kombat attracted the attention of the Black Dragon, who were impressed by his brutal victories. Erron Black thought he may have killed Kobra in a previous encounter. Will he finish the job, or taste payback? Choose their destiny!... FIGHT!
As for this round... Erron, Kobra has one thing going for him, and that was his connection to the Black Dragon. Erron has that plus a great design and personality.
