An official announcement is to be made by NASA today about a new planet that was recently discovered!
It has been called 'Sedna' after an Inuit goddess of the sea.
Check out a CNN report for some information. I haven't been able to find too many sites about it, but if you search for it... You'll find it!
This is the first planet discovery since Pluto in 1930!
Enjoy!

Very interesting. But I find it wierd that they would name it after an Inuit goddess instead of a Roman god or goddess, like all the other planets (besides Earth).

This is interesting news. I saw on the news today, they were like "hey theres a new planet in our solar system!" I was like "My life is complete!!!"

I'm not really impressed...sounds like a big asteroid trapped in an orbit around the sun.

Everybody knows there are BILLIONS of planets in the universe so I don't see a reason to rejoice unless it showed possible signs of life.

It's not a planet, there is a big debate going on about it, pluto also is not a planet, it has or is going to be re-classified as an ice based asteroid, the new so called planet is also an asteriod. Planets are going to be defined as being able or have in the past sustained life of some form. pluto cannot it's just a rock made of ice, the new asteroid, is also too far out in to space to be able to have or had life hence not a planet.

If a being a planet is defined as being able or in the past being able to sustain life, how do you contend all the other planets except for Earth and possibly Mars obtained their titles as planets?...last time I checked, it was a little impossible to live on Neptune...always has been, and probably always will be. Your logic - not working for me. And another thing, Pluto will be a planet until a scientist capable of making such a statement proves otherwise and changes the history books to reflect that. Whoo - done rantin...lol

And if planets are categorized as just being able to sustain life then the moon Io on Jupiter has the capacity for such life and is therefore a planet. I dont think so.

the reason they were classed as planets was because they were labeled that way when they were discovered and haven't been disputed since then, but they didn't have the technology and understanding as we do today, many of the things that was used then to determin what makes a planet a planet have changed we understand more about how the universe is made etc. that's why there is a debate about what makes a planet a planet, if your interested check out the link below about the Pluto debate.

There are three rules for doing scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.

Pluto is usually still classified as a planet because it has a sattelite of its own.
Don't forget that if you look at size, Mercury might also not qualify as a planet since there are some moons in the solar system that are bigger than Mercury (I think the two biggest Jovian moons?).
Cheers,

planet - pla 'net, n. A celestial body which revolves around the sun or other center...from New Webster's Expanded Dictionary. Now, I know there's more to it, as even a moon could be classified as a planet, but this is from a dictionary - you know, compiled by people who...ahem...KNOW what they're talking about! I've heard of the whole Pluto debate, but obviously not a lot came of it - Pluto is still classified as a planet. I've definitely never heard a scientist disputing whether Jupiter, Neptune, Uranus, etc. were planets, so really - everything you've said - hasn't made much sense. Be informed before you decided to TELL people what's what.
Edit - after reading this over, it kinda sounds mean...sorry!...it's my inner debater coming out. I still don't believe in your definition or reasoning for disregarding this new planet, especially since you couldn't adequately prove your point.

It seems you didn't bother to use the link i provided, in which case if you had you would have found that what i have said about pluto is prity much correct, yes it's still kinda classed as a planet, for now, but only because the governing body that name planets etc dont want to re-write history also they cant make up their minds as how to determin planets and which therory to beleive so things are kinda up in the air at the moment many want to leave things as they are many dont it's kinda like when people were told that the earth wasn't flat many didn't want to change that fact it was already written in history, but that was re-written and changed over time the same here, as to to where i got my info i was informed by a university professor at Oxford uni he's one of the experts that wants to change the definition of what makes a planet he's not alone in this, this is'nt some wild thing iv'e just plucked out of nowhere ive done a lot of research as well as studying for a degree on the subject so i think i do know what i'm saying, maybe the definition will change maybe it wont maybe something totally different will be used. I dont want to get into a major argument over this I just posted what i was told and what i knew to be true at the time,
