Did anyone else undergo the torture of having "special" kids in the arcades near them? Kids that argued things like the pronunciation of character names in MK.
For instance, there was a young boa at the video store where the MK3/UMK3 machine lived that insisted on these:
Shang Tsung = "Shang Tuh Sung"
Noob Saibot = "Know ahhb Sih bot"
Kabal = "Cable"
Thinking back I get a kick out of it. Were there any other popular mispronunciations like these wherever you played/play MK? Or was this strictly limited to our town idiot.
P.S. You remember that guy MK2KungBroken? What was his name? He looked like a rat, but a skinny one, not like Rat Boy from University Pinball.

Dreemernj = "Dree merng"
Anyway, I get what you're saying...
A lot of kids mispronounce names of characters in games including Mortal Kombat. Here's a conversation with my cousin about Guilty Gear X2 about a character called I-No:
ME: It's "Ee No!"
HIM: It's "Eye no!"
ME: "Ee no"! Look, I'll go into sound test to prove it.
HIM: It's "Eye no!"
( I go into sound test and make the announcer of the game say..... )
ANNOUNCER: "EE NO!"
ME: See?
HIM: IT'S "EYE NO!!!"

Yeah, everyone argued Sonya's name with me. It's was SONYA. Not "sahn-ya" SONYA!. And back in elementary school we always mispronounced names we weren't quite sure how to read.
Kung Lao = Kung Lay-oh
Shao Kahn = Shay-Oh Kahn
Shang Tsung = Shang to shung
Kung Lao = Kung Lay-oh
Shao Kahn = Shay-Oh Kahn
Shang Tsung = Shang to shung

Actually, I just remembered, one time a few months ago, a wrestling site was having a chat with XPac, but it was horribly organized. Anyways, there was one of those ultra lame 'wrestling talk shows' on at the same time, they were gonna interview XPac while taking chat questions from the fans. I went in under my nic, 'Blade-Tsung'..I decided to say I was XPac..after a while of answering questions (and getting some scary pm's) they said on the radio show 'It looks like XPac is here, under the name Blade-Sew-ung(butchered the name)'...I thought that was funny..

I guess our idiot wasn't the only one.
I now remember someone claiming Kung Layo and Sindle as well. And Showa Kahn.
And, Sponge-Zer0 brings up the excellent point that These names were said in the game. I remember that being my argument, that it was said in game, but it fell on deaf ears. The only one I would have understood was Goro because his name wasn't really said in game until MKT or MK4 or something.

I've heard "Show Kahn" for Shoa Kahn
"Sindle" for Sindel
"Cable" for Kabal
"Sindle" for Sindel
"Cable" for Kabal

LOL, your idiot...
I remember calling Lui Kang "Luey Kang" until I selected him in MK2 and heard his name.
Oh and one of my friends said Rye-den instead of Rayden.

Well depends. If it's spelled "Raiden" then it's supposed to be pronounced "Rye-den"

0
No, Raiden is supposed to be pronounced "rye-den", but since they didn't spell it correctly in MK 1 and 2 it sounded like ray-den. They finally spelled "Raiden" correctly in MK4, but since we've been pronouncing it the other way we just keep using it.

I remember playing MK1 in the arcade. In the arcade version of MK1, it's "Raiden" and the announcer pronounces it "Rayden". It was only spelled with a "Y" in the home versions because there was already a video game released called "Raiden" and I think some kind of a legal battle ensued. Anyway, the prononciation hasn't changed since it first came out and was spelled with an "I".

That would be Raiden from Fatal Fury, if I'm not mistaken, whom is also in Capcom Vs. SNK.

Actually, I was refering to a Flight-Sim game called "Raiden", which was pretty fun, but the legal battle may have come from that game as well. I'm not too sure though.

I've always heard the "Sahn-ya" one for Sonya, even though it is clearly "Sonya" like they say in the games.
And i've also heard "Loy Kang" for Liu Kang. Either the person who pronounced it like that was a straight up idiot or he thought it was "Lui" instead of "Liu".
And my friend said Quan Chi as "Quan Chy".
But the one I have always heard the most, mostly from adults that have know knowledge of MK or any video games for that matter, was calling Jax "Jack".
But those are are the only ones i've heard that I can remember, other than the ones already mentioned in the thread. Although the Sonya one was mentioned though.

I find it funny when people mispronounce character names in Mortal Kombat. I had a friend that would constnatly call Kabal, Cable (like that X-man guy) How can you mispronounce it when.
1. You pick that character on the select screen and it says his / her name.
2. You win with that character it says his / her name.

Because some people are too stubborn to believe that they might be wrong in pronouncing a name and that the game is always right.

OH Yeah, all the little kids around here say Motor Combak for Mortal Kombat, some adults say that too, they sound like idiots when they do.

Yeah, I did stuff like that before too. The key is, as you mentioned, you heard it pronounced and realized how it was supposed to sound. Its the people that can't do that, and continue despite being proven wrong, that bother me.
