Ed Boon Teases Big Mortal Kombat Surprise In 2020
Creative Director teases an end and the future!

With this month's release of The Terminator: Mortal Kombat 11 is now halfway through its Kombat Pack DLC expansion. The sixth and final character will arrive March next year, but in an interview at the Brasil Game Show, Ed Boon has suggested there may still be a big surprise to come in 2020! Read on for details:

Asked via translator if there was any news he could share about new or future Mortal Kombat projects, Boon answered with a reserved and slightly cryptic "yes and no".

The Creative Director went on to allude to Mortal Kombat 11 being viewed as an end to the Mortal Kombat story, with more characters still coming to the game, and a "big surprise" in 2020. The Sao Paolo interview clip can be watched in the embedded video above.

The story of Mortal Kombat, we're pretty much calling this one the end of the story, but we're certainly not through with Mortal Kombat. You know, there's more characters that are going to come, and we have a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat.

The MK11 Kombat Pack is scheduled to release Sindel in November, with comic book guest characters The Joker and Spawn bringing it to conclusion next year. The final download release is forecast as late as March.

Data-mining of the game revealed the possibility for additional characters still to be revealed for subsequent release. Listings for undetermined "Environments" and "Story" were also noted in the examined files. Data-mining and "Kombat Pack 2" have since been playfully referenced in-game via Terminator's victory sequence. Ed Boon previously confirmed the leak of the main roster in an interview with Gameinformer, but plans for additional characters remain unverified.

It's unclear if Boon's interview has simply ruled out the possibility of additional DLC chapters for Story Mode, or if Mortal Kombat 11's time-bending plotline will indeed serve as an end to the saga.

MK11's story closed with the defeat of Kronika and the rise of Liu Kang as a god who will oversee the creation of a new timeline. It presents an ambiguously open-ended future for the series, similiar to 2006's Armageddon, with the prospect of another cyclical reboot similar in circumstance to 2011's Mortal Kombat, which served as a slightly altered retelling of the original three games.

Avenues for speculation about the series' future span the mundane to the radical, with some fans choosing to put their hopes in remastered re-releases of past games. The schedule of the last decade has conditioned fans to expect an Injustice sequel around the corner, but a big surprise involving Mortal Kombat might spell something different. Rumors of animation and comic book projects continue to linger without result.

Big things are certainly on the horizon for the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole. Filming in Australia will continue next year for a theatrical reboot release coming in 2021. Free Mortal Kombat 11 Scorpion & Terminator PS4 Theme
Kommunity themes by BossLogic!

PlayStation now has a new Mortal Kombat 11 PS4 Theme you can download completely for free from the PlayStation Store! The "Kommunity Art" offering features the work of digital artist BossLogic. Take a look:

Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden appear in a fiery all-star MK background, while the second design celebrates the downloadable release of The Terminator guest character, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a cyborg-eyed Dragon Logo! The artist explained his enthusiasm for the series and creative process in a post to PlayStation.Blog:

Video games are life and Mortal Kombat has been a mainstay for me. Sadly, I have less and less time to play these days — that’s why I play fighting games: they’re quick and fun. I love MK, I love Street Fighter, Tekken… these got me through some tough times. So when Sony and WB reached out to see if I could help design a new PS4 Theme to celebrate the release of Terminator and the MK Kommunity, I was onboard instantly.

Designing this Theme was an easy process. I started with the Terminator. When I think of Terminator, I think dark, post-apocalyptic world. I generally prefer stylization & simplicity, and I wanted the focus to be on Arnold. WB loved the piece so much, they asked for a second one featuring the iconic original MK characters. I decided to make Scorpion the focus of this one, with Raiden and Sub-Zero featured as well. I originally had others in there, like Noob Saibot, but it didn’t work for the Theme. I love the distinctive, bright imagery and I wanted to capture each character’s personality using their iconic colors. My favorite part was putting Scorpion on a mound of skulls. To me, that just screams vengeance.

BossLogic has made a name for himself with a variety of digital creations, including envisioning the live-action Mortal Kombat cast in costume and new movie logo. His work can be found on Twitter and Instagram, as well as digital campaigns for the Avengers films.

You can download the Mortal Kombat 11 Community Art Theme right now! Got designs of your own you'd like to share? Submit your work to the MK Online Kreations archive and like, disuss, and share artist's work on the forum! Find and discuss more from the latest game on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!

NBA Jam Book Released Today!
A detailed look inside inside a historic chapter at Midway Games.

First initially reported by Mortal Kombat Online last fall, a new book about the history of NBA Jam — and more broadly, Midway and the ‘90s arcade scene — is coming out today! Published by Boss Fight Books, NBA Jam by Reyan Ali is an intimate look at the making of the hit arcade game (which featured Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Raiden as secret characters in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition) and life at Midway’s office in Chicago around it.

The book’s story is built off over 60 original interviews, including ones with Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, Sal DiVita (NBA Jam artist and Nightwolf/Sektor/Cyrax/Smoke in MK3), Kerri Hoskins (Jam cheerleader and Sonya in MK3), Doom co-creator John Romero, players Shaquille O’Neal and Glen Rice, secret characters DJ Jazzy Jeff and George Clinton, and the original NBA Jam team (including lead designer Mark Turmell, who worked closely with a young John Tobias at Midway on Smash T.V. and Total Carnage).

It also goes into the story of Midway’s downfall in depth, looking at the company before the company went bankrupt and the brand was bought by Warner Bros. in 2009.

NBA Jam is out in ebook formats today through Boss Fight Books’ site and Amazon Kindle ($4.99), and available for pre-order in print edition ($14.95) or paperback and ebook ($16.95). Click here to read an excerpt about the first night the public played NBA Jam at an arcade in Chicago in 1992.

In conjunction with the book’s release, Mortal Kombat Online is giving away a vintage mint-condition Mortal Kombat flyer. Midway sent these flyers like these to arcade owners to promote their new games and encourage them to buy them. This is an original piece of Mortal Kombat history — not a reproduction!
