They are more used to games with an aloberate game-engine etc,... Like Tekken, etc etc.
I don ́t think it ́s beucause of the violence.... it ́s because japanese people have prejudice against non-japanese games in general.
MK was never a big hit in Japan because it ́s foreign and they just think their games are better... some japaneses games are better, some are not... a lot of good american franchises exist nowadays and Mortal Kombat was always a good reason to buy a game. But unfortunately in Japan MK and things like XBOX aren ́t a hit just because they ́re american.

well, but mk has a lot of eastern influence....real martial arts styles, deities names (raiden, fujin etc)i think that these could bring their attentions

If MK was successful in Japan, we probably could've seen an MK anime by now.
I would trade all of Namco fighters anyway for MK... I don ́t care if it ́s slower... it ́s way more fun to play than those Namco fighters (which look very beautiful but have stupid characters with no worthy storyline, that ́s what I think). MK is dark and that ́s what makes people choose it over the other games.
Street Fighter is my other favorite game, always a classic, but it ́s been 8 years without a sequel... so I guess I prefer MK nowadays cause at least they care about the fans by still doing something.
I think it ́s really a case of prejudice against non-jap games.

Hey MK_KRAZY you ́re just being annoying here.
I ́m not saying that Japan hates MK because of what I think.
I just think that the reason I gave there is way closer to real than your reason.
GTA is not big on Japan, XBOX isn ́t big either.... because they ́re AMERICAN... and japanese people seem to think that their poop stinks better than the rest of the world in terms of technology.
Also, I agree with cosmothehound... MK is, in fact, very competitive.
And if you hate MK so much what are you doing here? Go play Tekken or Soul Calibur with those stupid characters who look like clowns just because it ́s more "balanced" and "competitive".

Well, your reasons are good to prefer the MKTeam, but MK Krazy said the true...
The japanese games are more balanced. I do agree with him on that.
But that ́s not the reason why japanese people boycott american games. Doom was never a success in there, Half-Life wasn ́t, Warcraft wasn ́t, Tomb Raider (not american but western) wasn ́t, GTA wasn ́t, Mortal Kombat wasn ́t, just because they ́re american.
There ́s an american RPG now which is an exception of that rule... I don ́t remember the name of the game, but the japanese gamers were asking for a translation and that was the first time it happened for an american RPG game to be succesful there. I ́ll search for this news and post them here. But it ́s not the way it works... they don ́t really care about what ́s going on here. The proof of it is that Mugen doesn ́t have a lot of western characters since they aren ́t popular over there (MK for example).

This is in the wrong forum as it has nothing to do with MK:A. I will move this to Classic MK Games Discussion Forum.

I can't speak for MK_krazy, but I will say most of the older gamers here that are fans of other fighting games (like myself) currently dislike MK for what it's been since MKT - garbage. Early MK games I like because there was playability within the actual fighting game.
1.) False. The only MK game that is played competitvely in major gaming tournaments is UMK3.
2.) Matter of opinion.
I have heard Mk isn’t popular in Japan for 2 well known reasons:
1- As stated by MK Krazy, (as much as I love Mk) Mk is not as competitive as the other fighters that hold a deeper more powerful gameplay system.
2- Being a famous game created by North-Americans, well, they just don’t like it.
That’s what I have heard/seen in forums, etc.

I have a friend who lives in japan ans she likes MK. though she told me in japan they like fast paced makes. soul calibu and tekken aren't really at the top in japan. they prefer games such a guilty gear which has a real fast fighting speed, also they like ames that have more thing that defy the laws of physics than blood and gore.

From previous discussions, and what's been said here again, MK doesn't sound too popular in Japan.
Which always makes me wonder why the Playstation version of MK2 was specifically Japanese-only.
And why the Japanese Sega CD version of MK1 was called "Mortal Kombat: Complete"
I guess there is, or at least was, some demand back in the day.

Grand Theft Auto is one of the few American games that "crossed" the sea...
