Greatest Game Character Designs
There are plenty of games, some good, some bad, that have characters that just look... inspired, cool, original... and while I'm curious to hear which characters you think meet this criteria, I'll admit I'm being a tad selfish in this thread and seeking inspiration for a game design job I'm applying for. So, regardless of game or character quality, which characters do you think have the visual flair to stand apart from the masses of generic, boring filler characters? Oh, and please post WHY... that tends to make all the difference.

WOW, where do I start? Well, Mario(yes I said mario) is a classic insantly. He's awesome for the role he plays.
For MK, I have to go with Ermac's newer 2004 revamp via MKD and how he looks in MKA now. This is arguably the best revamp for a video game character I've seen in quite some time.
Rain's isn't too shabby either( but since most think he's gay, he'll never hold up lol)
I'll get back with some more later on, good topic.

Marcus Fenix GoW! Altar AC. Apocalypse & Magneto. In the cinematic for X-Men Legend's 2. Martain Manhunter JLH PS2.
I loved in XML2, when Cyclops used his beam and Knocked Apocalypse, into the subway track's. Only to be hit by an incoming train. Apocalypse had none of it. He stoped the entire train w/o breaking a sweat! Then when he turned his head around and gave that sinister look. Man i get goose bump's when i seen that part. Apocalypse (En Sabah Nur) is like my ALL TIME favorite boss/character in any franchise known to man. I eagerly await his Debut in X4.

Wow Garlador.....I'm not sure where to start....but you gotta start somewhere.
Voldo
Soul Edge/Soul Calibur
I'm not sure what it is about Voldo that I am so taken by. Perhaps it's his stylistic costume, his deadly claws, or the fact that he does the crab walk rather well. I have loved Voldo since I was a kid. I think that it is the fact that he is so horrifying, yet at the same time he is beautiful in his movement.
Pyramid Head
Silent Hill 2/Silent Hill: The Movie
Now, I love both versions of Pyramind Head. The version in Silent Hill 2 just had that disturbing aspect to it. When you encountered him on the game you were not only terrified, but you would be left with an uneasy feeling as well.
The movie version of Pyramid Head kicked ass as well though. But I don't feel that he really had that "disturbing" side to him. Perhaps it was because I was all ready used to the character, or maybe it was just because it was just so kick ass. Garlador I think you know what I'm trying to say, I know that you're a fellow SH fanatic.
I will post more if I can think of anything. But these two are the ones that immediately stick out in my mind.

My favorite is Sub-Zero's Grandmaster design (main costume from deception). It is the perfect design for his character.

any character wearing daedric armor from oblivion looks good, it just has massive detail and gives you the feeling of a badass. The characters for the upcoming unreal 3 have impressive suit designs too.
others-
Nelo (or nero cant remember which is right) Angelo-Devil May Cry
Kratos-god of war
Nemesis-Resident Evil 3

Hmm, I will give you a short list and post more later:
- Venom
- Onimusha 3 (the evil guy who had a strange head and the main good guy)
- Plenty of the MK characters.
- Lara Croft
- Many from the final Fantasy characters series.
- The “Eagle” character from a classic fighting game (forgot the name). He had an amazing costume that looked like it was made of eagle feathers, he used it to do many cool special moves.
- Pyramid head
Damn, Im too tired right now, I might get back to you later.
Definitely.
Im new to the Silent Hill series, but I can definitely say Im a fan already, and that I LOVE IT!
The story is so beautiful, deep and brightly built, the games are incredibly fun, addictive, and well developed. The music...wow, it just rocks!
I was always interested in the series, but never really had the chance to play any of the games, then I got for a present SH4, and it is awesome. Im still far from finishing it but the game is very well done, and I hear that this one is not even the best one, and that its not so good when compared to the classics.
The movie....wow, no doubt one of the best videogame movies ever made, and it’s a shame that Resident Evil didn’t accomplish what this movie managed to accomplish: please the majority of the fans. It took the main elements of the game and incorporated them in the film, unlike RE (a series Im also a big fan of and I adore), that decided to go more for the action and some cheesy parts that ruined the beautiful dark atmosphere the games provide. The first movie was good and fun, but it just cant compare to the superb movie that was SH.
It was actually thanks to the movie that I fell in love with the series. So beautifully done, I love it.
I hope to get the other 3 as soon as I finish with 4. Sucks so much that the first one is only for PS1, I own a PS2.
BTW, do you know any links for awesome Silent Hill sites? I would love to explore/know about this world.

(now) Staff Sergeant Matt Baker from Brothers in Arms. Physically he's not unique except for that nasty scar on his forehead he got during the defense of Hill 30. The true greatness of Baker stems from the depth of his storyline and his personality.

Leon from Resident Evil 4! Yeah baby yeah.
Here's the designs I've always admired and think stand the test of time.
Solid Snake:
Everything about him is utterly memorable, from his gruff, gritty voice, to his sleek stealth outfit, to his token headband, all of which come together to give him a visual, yet realistic, flair that sets him apart from other generic heroes. The villains, likewise, (specifically Psycho Mantis) are usually visual standouts too.
Rayne:
To be fair, Lara Croft was the "original" video game babe (but I think even she is undermined by Chun-li, and Chun-li by Samus Aran), but in terms of raw, video game "babe"ness, Rayne has no equal. The pseudo-black bondage outfit she wears with the spiked, steel stiletto heels only accentuate the switchblades on her arms. But its her fire-red hair and green eyes that gives her an etheral color in contrast to her black & white attire.
Raziel:
While the finale of his "series" was relatively lackluster, there are few main heroes like Raziel. He is a character who has "died" twice and twice been "reborn", each with a more horrific design. His design is rather wraith-like, his skin burned blue, leaving nothing but bones and tight muscles and sinews where skin once was. His eyes burn an unholy yellow, and his shredded wings give the impression of a fallen angel. His gargoyal like claws and vampiric fangs on his jaw-less face only serve to further his grotesque design, while his only real scrap of clothing is a tatter banner of his non-existent vampire clan. He is both human, vampire, undead, ghoul, and angel, and serves as one of the most memorable and original character designs I've ever seen.
There are far more than I care to mention, but I'm also quite partial to Master Chief, Sonic, Ryu (the ORIGINAL karate guy), Link (OoT version), Pyramid Head, Nemesis, Fulgore, Shinobi (PS2 version), Pious Augustus, and Squall Leonhart.

Quite an interesting choice. I never would've thought of it, even though I love the Brothers-in-Arms games.
My favourite designs would probably have to be: Psycho Mantis, Liquid Snake, Vamp, The Sorrow, and The Fury from the Metal Gear Solid series; Cyrax, Reptile, Mavado, and Sub-Zero's primary outfits from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance; Odin from Final Fantasy VIII; Dagoth Ur from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind; Havik, Hotaru, and Ashrah from Mortal Kombat: Deception; and Scorpion and Mysterio from the Spider-Man movie-based games.

Best design? Well hell, now you're asking a 25yr old man to "remember"...stuff.
Aheh, np....In fact, gladly...Let's start wiiiith:
A. Street Fighter:
1. Guile(the high-top was a sign of the times for me, let alone a reference to the way military protrayd themselves outside of the...miltitary. Rough, tough and so on..)
2. Vega(Probably the first "Unique" character I came to identify with. Sleek, the Claw ect)
3. Chun Li(I was surprised to see a woman/girl fighter at all back then...nuff said)
4. M. Bison (First real type of "God Character" I ever came to realize)
B. Samuri Showdown:
1. Jubei Yagyu (#1 favorite from that series...and it started from the look. I think his look is the perfect medium between the "ninja" - Ninja Master - and congenial poster-boy for the game. Add a little spice with the eye-patch and there you go. )
2. Hanzo Hattori( first "ninja" I was forced to take seriously)
3. Ukyo Tachibana ( If there ever were a blue-print for Kenshi....)
C. Eternal Champions:
1. Larcen Tyler(was he with the Mobb or the Cops?...Interesting. There were complesities in his design I liked. The Clawed nuckles, the Trench Coat and slacks...pointed shoes.. Made him unique for me.)
2. Xavier Pendragon(Playable wizard of sorts)
3. Trident(I was into Mythology at this point, he seemed to be an adequate video game character for whatever my interpretation of a "Posiedon Minion" was back then.)
4. Mitchell Midleton Knight "Midknight"
Umm....I'll do some other games including Mk later.
