I love how some people's first reaction is to find the worse (in their opinion) costume example they can find and post it up as if it justifies why such an idea would be bad. It's like they just read the thread title and then hit reply as fast as they can.

Oh shit, seems I've struck a nerve...

Hmm, I'm not quite as fond of that one. That being said, still a phenomenal piece of artwork! I like this design for Kitana, minus the cyborg crap.

Seems like it'd be a fun publicity stunt but a waste of resources, the devs only have so much time they can spend on modelling skins, they ought to spend it on skins that either serve the story or that the fans actually ask for, like how everyone was annoyed MK9 only had retro DLC for the ninjas and none for any other character on the roster.

May I ask what is wrong with that? Have you seen the guy's other works of art?
Sure, everyone's got different opinions, but I really enjoy Midwood's work.
If every character had somewhat of a Blizzard touch, I'd definitely would be going ape shit crazy. There's some wonderful works of art I'd definitely would vote for if there was ever a competition to see who's work would get into the game.

Seconded.
Want something that looks like this? Didn't think so.

I love that outfit for Goro. Easily better than his usual get up.

I'm all for this idea . Didn't they also do somethuing similar with Lightning Returns?
Kenichi-Kitsune has some great art. Wouldn't mind seeing any of their stuff in the game.

Well NRS would still be designing the primary and alternate outfits, these would just be fun bonus outfits for some characters. But to each their own.

I think this is a FANtastic idea. Especially for a 2nd alt. I have no idea what art is out there so hopefully you guys post some more examples or where I can find some to look at.

I would be okay with the idea.
As long as these two conditions were met:
1. NRS chooses a handful of finalist (3-5 artworks) per character
2. A fan-voting system with strict 1 vote per person rules.

I like the idea. It could be a contest for one main character of Ed's choosing (probably Sub Zero or Scorpion). From Software did something similar for Dark Souls where they accepted shield design submissions and in the end From chose the winner.
I think its great to let the fans have a role in the game they follow so passionately, even if its a tiny role such as this idea.

As much as I enjoy fanart and fan-designs of MK characters, I would rather they stay that way. If NRS found someone doing a design they utterly loved and wanted that guy to make the designs for the rest of the roster, they would hire him. However, with so many talents already on the team, not to mention that WB owns DCU which is LOADED with that kind of talent, I doubt they would go for anyone on the outside.

Not second. Maybe down the line, free DLC. Also, only if I design something and it makes the list.
But, who would I design? I'd choose a new character. Cassie maybe?

Free DLC would be good. And I wouldn't mind opening it up to the newbies as well. It would definitely be interesting to see what takes some fans may have on them.

Actually, the changes aren't too different.
Kano's variation changes just have the different colored lights on his cybernetic wear, and the alt could easily still have these changes.
Cassie can wear sunglasses or have glowing hands with absolutely anything.
From what we've seen so far, the changes aren't too distinct and can be implemented with just about any costume, except maybe Quan Chi's. The only problem with his would be the spikes on his costume being red. His alt could easily be given the glowing red as long as it is on some part near the top of it.
More examples if you want even more reassurance:
-D'Vorah's alt could have a hood, which gives the option of it being off, and the venom in her skin could be included in any costume.
-Kotal Kahn's markings can change color without affecting the costume.
-Raiden's variations include lightning in different areas. There is no issue here unless the alt has Raiden without a hat on.
I didn't list Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or Ferra and Torr because I am unsure about how the variations change their appearance, but I'm sure they're fine.

Sub-Zero: One gives him a mask made of ice, one gives him ice-covered arms, and one gives him a big glowing medallion on his shirt.
Scorpion: One has swords on his back, one has fire on his hands, and one wears an item hanging from his belt that he uses for his zombie-summoning moves.
Ferra/Torr: One wears a red hood, one wears a white hood, and one has Ferra stand off to the side instead of riding his back.
