Will the MKX newbies go the way of most post-MK2 characters?
Will the MKX newbies go the way of most post-MK2 characters?
Yes, post-MK2, since the only MK3 characters to make more than one appearance in non-compilation games as playable ones were the Cyborgs and Ermac.
Anyway, which MKX newbies do you think might return in the next game, assuming it won't be another compilation game?
Not who you hope returns, but who you think has a better shot.
I know Kotal, Erron Black, Cassie and D'Vorah to an extent were welcomed by the fanbase before MKX came out, but I don't know if they're still popular now.
Even if they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they still went the way of popular Post-MK2 newbies like Kabal and made very few appearances in the future.

I'm positive those 4 you listed will be back, 100%. It's a good chance we'll see a giant ferra with a new rider too.Maybe she won't be as massive as tor so she might be a little faster and more well received gameplay. Takeda is also a good chance for a return. Only newbies likely to hit the npc bench would be Jacqui and a lesser chance kung jin.Yes, post-MK2, since the only MK3 characters to make more than one appearance in non-compilation games as playable ones were the Cyborgs and Ermac.

I probably would have said the way of most post MK4 characters since most of the MK3 chars are still better off than most of them.
Anyway Erron Black, Kotal Kahn, D'vorah and Cassie will most likely return as playable, the others might skip a game or just be NPC or something, but those 4 stand out as people who will likely be back.

Minus Erron Black. I'm not sold on the idea that he is "super" popular yet, but maybe its just wishful thinking.

I think Kotal, D'Vorah, Cassie, Takeda, and (ugh) Erron Black are auto returns.
Kung Jin and Jaqui are a maybe, and Ferra/Torr is probably not returning.
I hope they make Tanya return, she wasn't who I had hoped would make the cut, but boy do I love what they did.

I agree. Every game had at least one, maybe two or three, well received characters, but this is the first since MKII to have a majority.

Ironic a scorpion mainer calling another character annoying.
I don't know how to feel about erron black. I personally don't find him intersting to use and it seems on the rare occasions I do face him online its some little kid who does nothing but spam the rifle from a distance the whole match. Hopefully if he does return they'll get rid of that garbage.
I've got about 200 matches online and it seems like I rarely run into anyone using the newbies with exception of takeda and kung jin. Prob a handful of cassies and maybe once or twice dvor or jacqui. Don't think I've yet to face a ferra

These characters got a huge shot in the arm that hardly any of the other MK3-MKA did, in that, they had a story well crafted story mode with cutscenes and dialogue to give them recognizable personalities that stay in people's memories.
Many of the older characters never had that advantage. MK4 guys had short ending cutscenes that a lot of people never even saw. MKDA-MKA only really gave Shujinko and Taven anything close to that (and even then, they weren't nearly as well crafted. Just low-poly side-content.)
If the old sequels had been made as well and told in the style of the last two games, a lot more of the characters would have stuck around. As it happens though, they weren't (obviously) so the characters did nothing to get a foothold in people's memories, beyond the hardcore fanbase.
So yes, there are already people who will know, remember and expect Cassie about 10x more than they would saaaay... Nitara. or Sareena.

I have a feeling most of them will return, but I'd say it's almost a dead guarantee with Erron Black. The FGC loves the character, and he's widely used in tournaments. He may not be popular with casuals, but he definitely has a following.

I think Kotal will be back based on popularity and story relevance.
Cassie, Takeda, and Erron Black will likely return just on popularity alone.
I'm not totally sold on D'vorah returning just based on her situation at the end of the story. Unless we get another big time jump I predict she skips MK11.
Jacquie and Kung Jin I wouldn't be surprised if they get stuck in cameo hell, but also wouldn't be shocked if they returned. They could go either way.
Ferra/Torr in my mind is a one and done for sure.

There was no way of knowing character popularity in those days. Pretty sure Frost, Kenshi, Havik and a few other 3D era newbies were just as popular at the time.

The only news ones I should see returning are....
- Kotal Kahn
- Cassie Cage
- Takeda
&
- Erron Black
I should see Kung Jin & Jacqui turned into revenants.

You know, It's funny how Jacqui is accused by plenty of being generic, and might not make too many appearances in the future because of that, yet Ferra/Torr, who definitely do stand out, are just as unlikely to return as her if not more so. Then there's Kung Jin, who as far as I can tell isn't generic at all, yet he too might not return.
Guess it's just more idiotic hypocrisy from the fanbase. Not to single out the MK fanbase, as all fanbases are filled with hypocritical idiots.
I just wonder why Jacqui being generic (which is a matter of opinion) is such a problem in most fans' eyes, when they're rejected so many distinctive characters in the past, like Stryker and Drahmin, and drool over Fujin.

having an opinion on one thing and having the opposite opinon on a related or similar thing isn't hypocrisy. It's just contradiction. like Walt Whitman said: people are "large and contain multitudes." Contradictions are natural.
Plus, distinctiveness is only one aspect of characterization, even in fighting games.
I love Ferra and Torr myself. They're big, loud, hit hard, and are funny. Some guys might think Ferra's TOO loud. Or Torr's TOO big. Or that they're NOT funny. Hell, maybe Mad Max 3 gave them nightmares and Ferra/Torr sends them into the fetal position. Maybe they're insane, and think Tara Strong is part of some Jewish conspiracy, thus Ferra and Torr are evil Anti-American symbols. Who knows?
Either way, you can't hold it against a guy for holding conflicting opinions on characters. It just happens.

Why is Ferra/Torr considered to be the Mavado/Kira of MKX? I know they didn't do much in the story, but neither did Erron, Jaquei, or Kung Jin. Story relevance in one game rarely guarantees making it to the next. Fujin is a prime example of that. I see a lot of potential for Ferra/Torr. Characters like Ermac, Baraka, and Reptile have made large fan bases and have never been that important. Also, Ferra/Torr easily stands out among the other combatants in terms of design and personality. I would be disappointed if they didn't make a return.

Because they added absolutely nothing worthwhile to the story what-so-ever. The first time they show up is in a QTE and the next they are quickly glossed over by one fight in the woods in Earthrealm. They added absolutely nothing and we were given not even a hint of back story to them what-so-ever. Hell, they hardly even have speaking lines for that matter. They were almost a waste of a roster spot the way they were handled. Even in the comics, their entire backstory with Kotal was glossed over by cutesy dialogue where everyone else they covered got several pages of stuff. I'm not saying they're bad characters but should they have been in MKX with the amount of time they were given? Absolutely not. That space should've gone to someone else; hell, even Tanya, Rain, Baraka and Sindel get equal (or perhaps even more) screen time than they do.
Erron Black is there defending Kotal Kahn and almost kills Rain, he leads the youngsters to Kotal Kahn, he investigates D'Vorah's deception at the docks with Ermac and Reptile and then goes into Earthrealm with Kotal and his troops.
Jacqui gets a budding romance plot (despite the argument of whether its well-implemented or not), major face time in the plot and has some genuine motivation because of her relationship to Jax and Cassie.
Kung Jin gets to shine as the prominent gay character who was well-written and extremely well handled when, given how NRS typically writes, could've been handled extremely poorly. He also gets scenes that make you feel for him (the Raiden flashback) as well as proving he's a worthwhile member of the team due to how he handles Kotal Kahn.

The story delved into Kung Jin's backstory, and he was integral to parts of the story with Cassie's team, so I don't get how Kung Jin did nothing for the story.
Ferra/Torr did nothing at all, and the way they were treated in the story kinda reflects that.

Dat build-up though.
Even though she's kind of lone wolf now since burning all her bridges, I don't think we've seen the last of her yet. NRS seems very proud of This One.
Didn't Ed also mention in an interview that she is his favorite of the new characters? We all know what that means.
But I pretty much agree about the rest of them.

Agreed about her build up but I think she'll be saved as a cameo and used as a device to later bring back Quan Chi. I think if and when (who am I kidding, when) Quan Chi comes back, they will come back together as a pair.

I meant it more as you could have written the same story without those characters. Plenty of characters have had no story in their first appearance, but evolved from there. Noob didn't have much of a story or affect the story in his first appearance. Neither did guys like Reptile, Jade, and even Kano was just "bad guy with metal eye." Why wouldn't Ferra/Torr fall in that category potentially?
