I'm talking about the prison of souls, the giant cyborgs and all other high-tech characteristics of MKM: Sub-Zero's netherrealm. I found that interesting and original. Pretty much every games post-MK4 have ignored the netherrealm's technological roots. I liked that the only world other than Earth to be seen using technology is Hell, of all places.

Don't get me wrong, I did like all the other takes on the netherrealm. MK9's Hell is one of my favorite stages, and it's theme one of the best in the series. But I want to see the netherrealm's technological side again. They should just combine it with all the other versions of Hell.

Earth-based stages include the urban backgrounds, the Wu Shi Academy, and Shang Tsung's whole island. Outworld has Shao Kahn's arena, the deadpool, the kombat tomb, and the armory just to name a few. No reason the netherrealm couldn't be as diverse as well.

When the Netherrealm is usually shown, with all the lava as seen in places like Scorpion's Lair, I believe it's normally referenced as the "Fifth plane of the Netherrealm".
I'd be in favor of incorporating a concept like Dante's inferno.
Having nine circles (layers/planes) of the Netherrealm.
Each layer like the original concept representing a sin of what brought the corrupted soul there.
For example:
The fifth layer (wrath) is the usual fire hell warworld we're used to seeing, but the prison of souls would be another layer.
The last layer being absolute cold and darkness would be a fitting place for Noob Saibot (Bi-Han) to emerge from, after the high crimes of killing Gods in Sub-Zero Mythologies.

Its still has the High Tech side that you said you loved in MK:M and MK4. The side of Neatherrealm you saw in MK9 was just a part of the realm not the whole realm.

I believe there's mention in Deception that either the city area you visit in Konquest mode, or one of the fighting arenas, is on the First Plane of the Netherealm. There probably are indeed 9 planes like Dante's Inferno, though we haven't seen most of them.

All that said, I definitely miss the Mythologies version of the Netherealm with the industrialized prison area and the pyramid and the whole story of "Shinnok uses his magic to make Hell look more like Earth because he wants to rule Earth so bad."

I also miss it being spelled with only one R. That's how Tobias wrote it.

Yeah, I remember something about that too. I'm pretty sure it was in text.
That would be nice to see if the idea of the Netherrealm planes still exists, it would give room for lots of design choices.

It would be great to see how creative NRS could get with various areas of the Netherealm, since I'm guessing it's going to be the main setting for the next game.

Cue the Because Poor Literacy is Kewl.

As for the high-tech aspect of the Netherrealm. Fuck it into oblivion and beyond, to me that is the single most offputting element in MK.

For once I would like to see a hell which is not some sort of modern arcoscopic metropolitan allegory, or Dante's fanwank about layers and how Cocytus is frozen over with Satan. Fire and brimstone...

You know, there are alot more interesting and not used underworld concepts, such as the Yama Kings and the chinese afterlife, the frozen hell of Tunguzka people, ....

Hell, I would even be up for some vodoun elements, a la Shadowman and Gabriel Knight.
