What do we officially know?

This should be a thread to compile all of the information that we ACTUALLY DO KNOW from the Boon interviews. From what I remember he did say ALL old characters are going to be scrapped. I keep reading on this forum that he said Scorpion and Sub Zero are returning and I didn't read that anywhere. I could have sworn he said ABSOLUTELY NO RETURNING CHARACTERS WHATSOEVER. This is a fresh start for the series, and in order for that to happen, you gotta start over. NO returning characters. Makes sense to me.

Also, he said it's going to be dark and gritty, and that he was inspired by the art direction in Gears Of War. No more silly bullcrap in Mortal Kombat.

If he did somewhere mention that Sub Zero and Scorpion are returning then could you please post a link or something in here? I think most people on here are just saying what they want to happen or just saying what they think would make sense. If Ed Boon said in one interview that there will be not one single character returning, than what makes you think Scorpion or Sub Zero will be returning. Haha, seriously. You guys need to understand that this game might not even be called Mortal Kombat. This is a complete fresh start.

Anyways, please post any other information that Ed Boon has actually said in interviews for this game.

- They will use the Unreal 3 Engine

- It will be for next generation gaming...AKA PS3 X-box360

- Scorpion and Sub-zero will be back.....and all the remaining characters were killed! (You will run into people who claim that some characters will return, but they haven't got any evidence of that)

- That is all we really know so far.

Cool man thanks. I had no idea Boon ever mentioned Sub and Scorpion returning. Well, if I want any characters to return I guess those are the ones.

give it a rest already... i'm going to basically agree with outworld right now becuase there will be a majority of the characters that will not return... but i wouldn't say dead... i would just say... going on a hiatus... but still, give it a rest already, people can say wahtever they want.

People can say whatever they want, but I can still correct them. Since this is a thread about what we officially know, and we don't know for sure who is returning and who is not, I will argue against it.

Read it three times. Where did it say that Sub-Zero and Scorpion are the only hidden characters?

Oh, and if you meant this: "and try to introduce as many new characters as possible" that statement is open to interpretation and did not absolutely state anything about who is or isn't in MK8.

Let's all just stop posting these pointless MK8 threads until we have some news of consequence. All of this "info" is open to interpretation and subject to change. We have far too many threads asking for information on MK8.

Enough of this fucking crap already,Ed Boon never said that Sub-Zero and Scorpion are the only returning characters,he said that "he can't imagine a MK game without Sub-Zero and Scorpion",it's different.

what we know:

-A lot of freshness to the game,including characters and fighting engine.

-more dark and serious game (like Gears of War,Ed Boon's comment)

-developed for Xbox360 and PS3 (right now Nintendo WII is out of the picture but maybe they develop a version after ps3 and 360,a PC version was mentioned on a site but i think it was proven false)

-according to Ed Boon MK8 is coming out around november '08.

- that comment Ed Boon made about "something unexpected that he can't talk about" or something like that.

-developed using Unreal Engine 3.

i've been saying that for the longest time, you're not going to get people on this site to stop posting threads about mk8 even though there's barely any news on who's really in it, what's the plot, and what it's going to be like. so you can't really stop anyone from posting.

outworld222: I knew that you got that idea in that way. You didn't properly read it into it, so now I know for sure why you kept spewing this bullshit. Sub-Zero and Scorpion aren't the only ones coming back. As said before, Ed Boon wants to put in as much newness as possible. That doesn't mean that those two are the only returning characters.

Yeah, Boon's cmments are rather broad and can mean any number of things. "As much newness as possible" does not mean nobody is coming back. Hell, he said that about Deadly Alliance.
"Wiping the slate clean" could just mean all current storylines are going to end...not necessarily all the characters involved.

Besides, this is the same Ed Boon who claimed Deception would have "super secret unlockables that will be a thrill for the old school fans." That claimed they hired a comic book writer for Shaolin Monks to "ensure the story fits into the continuity." That Armageddon was going to "tie up all loose ends of the storyline."

Don't believe anything until you see it.

Im not against you Outworld. I have a strong feeling that the characters will all die. MK wants to go in a new direction and keep the genre alive. All though I want some characters to return, the MK team knows how to fuck a game up. They also know how to change things to go in a good direction.

I even have the feeling Scorp, Sub, and Noob will go as well. And I dont wanna play the game without these characters. IMO these are the three most exiting fighters, and also the reason MK has done so well.

What im looking at here is info on the saurian species and im reading something which boon confirmed that it was the long-dead matriarch,
who well play a big roll in bringing back the saurian race

we do know
1 there is the unreal 3 engine which looks fun
2 scorpion and sub-zero are confirmed
3 and we do know that this well be the darkest game in history
now boon also said he has alittle suprize for us....something big
i haven't been this curious semse i was wondering who the final monsters were in godzilla unleashed

Well I just can't wait to see what happens in the next mortal kombat (8) I sure hope there are more distinguished characters with good story lines and all it sucks every body died though R.I.P. Johnny Cage but of course I knew sub-zero and scorpion because both have been in every single mortal kombat except scorpion who missed out in Mortal kombat 3 NOT Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 but anyways I hope Ed Boon gives us more details on the game.

Nothing is conclusive except for the usage of the Unreal Engine 3. Just like MKs' storyline throughout history. "Mostly inconclusive".

Boon has made a comment about not being able to see Mk without Scorpion or Sub-Zero, but that doesn't say much either. Except maybe, that we fans, wouldn't be wrong to ASSUME that those two characters "are likely" to stick around in some way, shape, or form. He has also made comments about a couple other characters that "are likely" NOT to return. Most like Stryker or Mokap.

But if you read that right, ALL of it is inconclusive jargen.

So, "What do we officially know?":

"Mk8" will feature the usage of the Unreal Engine 3.

That's it....that's all. Beyond that? A cluster of figurative speech, puns, and illustrative, yet illusive statements made by Ed Boon. I.E. he's making his rounds, selling the game to the core of fans before the mainstream public, and before the game is even remotely done production-wise. Which btw, there's nothing WRONG with that.

Bottom line? Just wait and see.
