What are the chances that well get more than 1/3 female characters?

At this point it seems like NRS is very strictly holding up a numbers game of 1/4 or 1/3 women in the roster. I'm not sure I love that idea, just because it feels like a sausagefest right now. I feel like no-one would have really had a problem with a more balanced roster, because when the first characters came out, it was pretty even, and no-one complained. Not to mention, Kitana and Cassie are already shaping up to be some of the best characters, with Kitana's updated design and Cassie's humor, so it's not like I'm arguing for characters to be put in just because bewbs or anything. I just feel like there's a small sense of unconscious favoritism; the better developed characters tend to be male, and that makes people think that male characters are just better, which leads to an underdevelopment of the female characters.

An example of this would be Sindel, Mileena, and Sheeva in MK9. They had pretty awkward playstyles and were difficult to use, and 2 of the 3 are probably not going to show up in MKX, despite canonically, Sindel being one of the strongest characters ever, and Sheeva being not drastically different in concept to Goro. Think about it; what really separates Goro from Sheeva? A worse outfit maybe, and story relevance, but that isn't the character's fault: Sheeva was demoted to a lackey for the entire story mode.

Then there's the fact that Jade was one of the more popular characters in MK9, and is one of the 'core' palette swaps (i.e. Scorp Sub and Reptile vs. Tremor and Noob), but ended up being killed and taking away a variation from Kitana to some extent, but Kano was given the chance to improve on his mediocre MK9 showing, and now has many people very excited to play as him. Not to even mention Quan Chi, who ranks the same as Sindel.

MKX has taken some huge steps forward, and I'm glad that we no longer have a default animation for women to act aroused at all times or to look like they should work at Hooters rather than fight in Mortal Kombat, but for the fans who like/prefer female characters, I'd say that there needs to be some more female reveals. Here's to hoping!

P.S. I'm not suggesting we should have a forced number of women to men (which is why I disagree with the 1/3 thing), but you can't tell me that it just so happens that most of the characters end up being male or that the 1/3 thing is just coincidence.

Maybe because males are used more than females in fighting games.

Does not signify.

I rather have three exceptionally well represented females ina game than have an arbitrary numerical limit.

The amount does not constitute any kind of argument: take alook at Dead or alive, where the cast is literally nearly 2/3 female, BUT most of them are nothing more than juvenile masturbatory manchild fantasies of a degenerate patriarchal Japanese value system.

And you make a good point, but no-one is looking for just MORE female characters. But why can we so easily have 20+ males that are well represented and designed but only a few females without resorting to boobs and fanfare?

I want more well-designed females. I want more along the lines of Kitana, Cassie and D'Vorah, because they've been wonderful so far and it doesn't make sense to me that just male characters should dominate the roster.

Because even in a made-up universe with dragons and wizards in it, you are probably not gonna find a lot of females who can hold their own in brutal hand-to-hand combat against killer robots, Shaolin monks and gigantic four-armed alien monsters. A fictional fantasy setting can ask the audience to suspend their disbelief, but asking them to suspend common sense is never a good idea.

I mean, sure, you can throw that out of the window and artificially inflate the number of females on the roster beyond realistic expectations, but at this point, you might just as well go play Dead or Alive.

Everyone wants to see cool new characters. I just don't necessarily see why the developers should go out of their way to make them female.

I think that AT BEST, we can expect about 7 to 8 females, not counting Ferra Torr, since they're a "they" rather than a "her."
1. Kitana
2. Dvorah
3. Cassie
4. Sonya
5. Mileena
6. Jacqui?
7. Tanya?
8. Maybe Li Mei, Sareena, Frost or someone new?

Kitana
Mileena
Sonya
Tanya
Jacqui
Frost

Li Mei and MAYBE Sareena as DLC.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I think there will be at least 2 or 3 more females in.

We probably won't get a lot of women, as the primarily straight male demographic love their sausage fests.

Only three of MK's women are iconic: Kitana, Sonya and Mileena. We've already got Kitana back, Sonya and Mileena are pretty much shoe-ins, so the only returning gals outside of these three that even seem to have a chance are Tanya and Frost, and I'd be surprised if they both came back. Any gals we get after that will likely be new ones, and Jacqui's the only new female character that's been introduced in the comics, so far.

I disagree t-rex females should be able to do things and Hold thier own. I want more female characters as well cause I feel any game needs it. A strong female presence is welcome. 3 and q half (Ferra) isn't enough.

We'll probably get the same as every other MK, which is 20-25% female cast. I don't see why it matters.

Kitana, Mileena, Sonya, Cassie, Jacqui, D'Vorah is a pretty good line-up.

Quite a few actually. Female MMA fights are actually growing in popularity especially in the US but this is all beside the point.

In regard to MKX I am fine with whatever cast NRS wants to assemble. This goes doubly since we don't know the full cast nor the official roster size. We all need to pump the breaks on worrying about characters. I advocate for quality over quantity...male, female, whatever.

How many four armed monsters do you know of?

How about sorcerers that raise the dead?

Your point about being able to suspend disbelief about monsters and robots but not about women beating them... That's absolutely ridiculous. This is a fantasy world, ANYTHING can happen. A man can shoot fireballs out of his hands, but a woman couldn't possibly win a fight against a robot? Do you realise how misogynistic you sound?

Here's what it boils down to:

Can an (average) woman take a punch to face as well as an (average) man?

You might want to think before you answer.

Zero_Jade Wrote:

OH BOY HERE COME THE SOGGY KNEES :D

Just so we're clear moving forward, how many female characters is a fighting game required to have before social justice is finally served?

Like, what's the official quota suggested by the Komissariat of Diversity?

ProfesserAhnka Wrote:

I'm aware, thank you.

Now, if you would, compare how many female fighters there are in comparison to the males. You might notice a bit of an imbalance there.

I wonder why what is. Must be those fucking misogynist MMA pigs.

Could you be any more ignorant? A character's gender goes beyond just hand combat.

No, the AVERAGE woman cannot, the same as the AVERAGE man cannot take a spear to the chest and continue fighting. This is a ficitonal setting and many of the characters in this game are not even human, let alone 'average'. My point still stands, if you can accept a man shooting fireballs why can't you accept a woman kicking ass?

I did not say anything about requiring a specific number of female characters. I was merely commenting that your point about being able to suspend disbelief about four armed monsters but not being able to 'suspend the truth' that a woman could not fight as well as man in a fantasy setting is ignorant and ridiculous.
