Well I'm sure I'll try all of Scorpion, Raiden, Cassie, Kotal, etc.'s styles to figure out what I'm most comfortable with, since I generally prefer speed and flashiness, and in those cases I'm not yet sure how they're going to play (actually, I'm fairly certain I won't use Ninjutsu much. I've just never liked Scorp with swords.)

I'm not really the kind of person who counter-picks though, I'm not good enough to look past "do I know how to do all of my moves, have I perfected my timing on these combos?" and think about what the other guy is going to do too on top of that. It's why I play casual instead of being an FGC guy. (Except in Smash, but Smash is easy.)

Sub's other 2 just don't look as fun or fitting for my playstyle as Grandmaster though.

I mean fair enough. Some people sit down with MK to play checkers where other people are playing chess. I get that, and you know what? That's totally fine. People play these games the way they want to play them. I'm just pointing out that one of the biggest key features of the game (as of right now) is the depth and strategy that lies in character variation.

I mean it's literally what most FGC heads are buzzing about across FGC communities and is arguably the single most unique mechanic MKX is introducing into its fighting engine.

That's the beauty of MK these days. Its appealing to everyone.

Oh yeah absolutely. I'll be messing around with everyone to see who I like as well. I'm not one of those to proclaim "I'm maining such and such character" before the game is even out even if I'm a fan of the character (like Sub-Zero). No offense to anyone who does. Honestly extreme hype behind a character makes me shy away from him/her and look at less used/played characters.

There's a lot more grey area than you think as far as skill level goes. It really just depends if you find the depth fun or not.

I despise counter picking. I understand it's strategic value but it really kills the fun for me. I tend to ignore match-ups and just grind out characters I enjoy playing. From a spectator perspective (watching offline tournament streams) it's also a serious buzzkill to watch people counter-pick and tier-whore. Character loyalists are infinitely more hype.

That's why I'm excited about variations though because it (at least seemingly) removes the strategic necessity in swapping to another character. You get the best of both worlds with variations.

Sub's other 2 just don't look as fun or fitting for my playstyle as Grandmaster though.

I was immediately interested in a "Khori Blade" style since it looked like his rushdown variation and one of the biggest bummers about Subz in MK9 was that he was more defensive/turtle. Clone is a badass move though so I expect Grandmaster to be super popular.

Well Variations are essentially a developer-endorsed form of counterpicking. You get to stick with the same character but half of his moves are different, and the whole reason this engine was created was to rock-paper-scissors the other guy, which means to use it effectively, you have to know what HIS moves do on top of knowing your own.

Personally, I don't have the capacity to memorize three different movesets for the same dude. I'm gonna have to pick a favorite and stick with it forever.

I can't even play more than 5 MK9 characters properly without constantly pausing to re-read the moves list, because I don't use them nearly often enough for it to transfer from my shortterm memory to longterm...and I've owned that game for 3 years.

I'm pumped about the whole variation system.

I'd see myself picking my variations like I pick my characters...ones that are not commonly used, have creative zoning or defensive potential, and/or are flashy with magical effects. I'm all about style.

This system may very well have me using characters that I may have never considered. I'm not a Raiden fan, and I was kind of "eh...." throughout his reveal trailer until I saw those traps that can be linked. Now I'm seriously thinking about at least trying him out. I never thought I'd say that about Raiden before.

Stances + Tag Team + Hara Kiri / Fatalities would be anything you like in terms of gameplay. Do not need anything more. And 8-Kombat (UMK3).

Instead of learning five or six characters,I will probably main two with all variations.

That doesn't even make sense. NRS did EXACTLY that by including 3 selectable variations per character. If your point is that the variations cant be swapped in-match like stances then that still doesn't negate the fact that you have the option to switch styles yet retain the same character BEFORE or AFTER the match.

DURING. The point is during.
It would be nice to have all three.

@weapontheory Agree to disagree it is then. You're right, we both would just end up repeating our previous points over and over again lol.

Like i said earlier I mained 5 characters mk9. And while I would like to do so again, I don't know if, logistically, it will work out (with all variations, so 15 total). After repetitive play I was able to learn and remember all 5 characters moves by heart. It will be interesting to see if I can learn more than that. Time will tell I suppose.

Well in MK9, the only people whom I couldn't combo with at all was Jade and Jax, but still, I think I'll stick with one or two variations of the characters, based on my gamestyle :)

I hear ya about Jade. My girlfriend tho would sometimes play with me and she would use Jade. She was a button masher but for some reason it just clicked with Jade's move sets and my girlfriend was actually pretty good haha. Kinda funny

I kind of couldn't handle Jax either. Jade was my second best character though.

Huh. I actually found Jade rather easy to combo with. I could pull off some pretty mean tricks with the Lady in Green. grin

But yeah, oh god, Jax. Couldn't do jack shit with him, even though I really wanted to play him more often. lol

Jax isn't much of a combo character if I remember right, he just have hard hitting short attacks that work out.

Jade, I had so much fun learning to combo with Jade. One of her staff attacks alone is a easy combo juggling starter.

Are you talking about the Forward-Jump-Square, Back-Square, Down-Back-Triangle, Back-Triangle combo set-up? Love it. So fluid, and sets the foe up for some serious follow-up pain. grin

(Using PS3 buttons, of course).
