Erron black surprised me a lot( especially his xray with the name on the bullet.)
I would of said Johnny but eh.

Cassie hasn't surprised me.

This thread will carry a lot more substance and weight a couple weeks following the release of the game. But for the sake of participation, based on what we've seen so far (as OP points out):

Top 5 (So Far)
1. Sonya (Based on character loyalty and the garrote counters)
2. Johnny (Fisticuffs, amazing intros and personality, fluid style)
3. Kano (Commando Counters and Grapples, Snazzy knife attacks)
4. Mileena (Flashy combos thanks to Ravenous and Piercing, huge step up from MK9)
5. Erron Black (Looks complicated to play as, right up my alley)

Will Optimistically Try:
Cassie (Haven't been impressed by her play style, cross between Stryker and Cage... But I'd like to keep the family together on my TV screen!)
Shinnok (I was a little underwhelmed by his gameplay but I want to overcome that in the name of his awesome presentation!)
Kitana (Used to like her in MK2, but that's since been on a steady decline for various reasons; however, dat Assassin variation tho!)

Bottom 5 (So Far)
1. Ermac (I'm not really wowed by anything other than his look)
2. Kung Jin (Too heavily reliant on arrows, strikes me as a monotone character)
3. Liu Kang (I've just never been a fan, and his new play style hasn't changed that)
4. Takeda (Feels a little too gimmicky and---hate the word, but---scrubby)
5. Scorpion (Meh...Nah...)

All this being said, I reiterate that this whole discussion is very tentative, and the whole list may change once I/we get our hands on the game.

I will also most certainly be trying everyone out no matter what, and will continue to play as the whole cast in casual/friendly matches with others.

TOP 5

1) Liu Kang (Big fan of, Balanced fighting styles that suits any situation, cant wait to rage quit people with his no metter resets and frame traps)

2) Kung Lao (Anti airs let me control jumps, anything else is for his zoning or mix ups)

3) Milenna (Maybe the best anti zoner in the game, her new combos will confuse the oponent and her zoning is better now with the low sai blast)

4) Kitana (Love her reach and combo probabilities, every air proyectile conected can lead to a combo so... big punishes for zoning!)

5) Predator (For me, he suits perfectly in the MK universe, cant wait to see what they did with him)

MID CHOICES

1) Johnny Cage (Awesome frame traps but now his most letal cheap damage is tied to only one variation)

2) Kotal Khan (Maybe has the best damage buff in the game, hight risk/reward character, also I like his back story, )

3) Cassie Cage and Jacqui Brigs (Dont really impresed so far by Cassies ́fighting style , but i like this characters)

4) Sonya Blade (I like Blondes and rushdown characters, so...)

5) Takeda (Awesome range attacks, im not really shure about his likenes and i hate that costume, but overall good mix ups and footsies)

BOTTOM 5

5) Reptile (Tricky, good for punishes and zoning but i l prefer a human costume)

4) Jax/ Kano ( I will use them but not too much, i like their figthing styles as well)

3) D Vorah (I haven ́t seen enought of her fighting stile yet but she seems to have tricky set ups)

2) Ferra Torr (This character seems pretty fun! also have damage buffs so hight risk/ reward character again, but i dont like Brawlers too much maybe some fun matches will be cool for me)

1) Quan Chi (He has some very interesting buffs and could be very deadly used in a correct way, specialy with cheap damage and corner punishes, even the summon demon seems pretty cool and usefull for Mix ups, he also seems to play a major role in the story, But I hate him!!! LOL So this one is only for once a month fun and for unlock things, because i like to get all endings and costumes)

1) Mileena/ Kitana - Always been a Jade fan, but both these two look hella fun to play in MKX and will hopefully serve as worthy replacements - equally excited for both.
2) Johnny - Never really been a fan but he's looking great in MKX!
3) Cassie - Wasn't initially impressed, but the more I see of her the more excited I get.
4) Takeda - Design wise he looks okay, but his gameplay looks great from what I've seen.
5) Kenshi - Not seen gameplay yet, but he's always been one of my favourites, so I'm sure he'll remain that way.

Bottom

1) Jax - Never really like him, feels like an unecessary edition from what we know.
2) Jacqui - Design looks horribly plain, hopefully gameplay will be good to make up for that.
3) Liu Kang - Always found him rather generic and bland, not a whole lot has changed.
4) Ferra/Torr- Love the concept/design, but slow grapplers aren't really my thing.
5) Reptile - Was initially excited by him, but I'm not sure I actually like his design anymore.

Sonya: due to characters loyalty.
Kano: loved his design, he feels fresh.
Quan Chi: I like his design as well
Kung Lao: I love fast characters.
Kenshi: character loyalty

Bottom:

Cassie Cage: if I want a funny characters I go as Johnny, If I want a blonde I play as Sonya, If I want missiles I play as Sektor, If I want guns I play as Stryker or Erron Black.

Ermac: I hate his stance.

Takeda: don't know why really, I think it's his design

Shinnok: I expected a lot more from him.

Ferra/Torr: Ferra is annoying.

Lol @ people putting Jacqui at bottom 5 and Goro at their top 5 without having even seen their gameplay!

Anyway as for mine (based on looks AND gameplay)

Top 5:
1.Mileena - Biggest improvement both looks and gameplay-wise since MK9.
2.Shinnok - I'm sorry but he looks and plays amazing. Impostor will be sick!
3.Kitana - First time I like her
4.Quan Chi - Besides the stupid bat, I love his gameplay
5.D'Vorah - I find her tools very interesting

Bottom 5:
5.Scorpion - Where'd the fireball come from? His moves are more gimmicky than ever
4.Cage - Stunt double is pure BS!
3.Reptile - He looks so weird and clunky
2.Ermac - I used to love him but he honestly looks so slow and useless in MKX
1.Liu Kang - Besides his dark form his gameplay is yaaawn. They're always failing to do something interesting with him

Based off of what we have seen so far who are the characters in your Top 5 and Bottom 5?

TOP 5

1. Kung Jin
At first from the "arm and bow" teased picture, I was afraid he would be a cop-out Nightwolf relative and I would to immediately hate the character if this would be true regardless of my interest in a bow user.

But instead, he's related to Kung Lao. And I'm okay with that, because besides the Dive Kick, he doesn't remind me of Kung Lao. He's that unique for a relative character which cannot be said for Cassie Cage. Which honestly disappoints me on the thought, why does he have to be related to someone when he's THAT unique?

Gameplay wise, it was no surprise that he would remind people of Green Arrow from that Injustice game.
He can change his arrows and they have special properties.
But the variation I am so happy they made real is using the bow as a staff weapon. This was an idea I wanted the moment they teased him. And as expected, it's suitable to my play style, one combo happy aggressive fuck, and he delivers. NetherRealm Studios, delivered.

Another surprise is the discovery that two of Kung Jin's variations are what could have been for Jade if she was to return from the dead.

Bojutsu, where the Bow acts like a Staff weapon.
Shaolin, where he throws around an item hosted on his side. Enhance projectile acts like Jade's Boomerang in MK9 too.

2. D'Vorah
Everything about her I find unique. Above all, her character design is very unique to me as a bug-like creature and the moves that follow. It's something new and fresh to the roster and to the MK Universe. And her dialogue is just as unique.

3. Kitana
Sucks that we have resurrected dead characters taking up spots of what could have been a new character. But she was definitely worth it to be brought back. If Kitana didn't look the way she did now, I probably would had been singing a different tune about her. But she finally looks like the assassin she was created to be and her new persona and the returning voice actress fucking nailed it.

In the end, Kitana plays like Kitana. But the additional fun for me is that she has a Parry in one of her Variation. And while this sadden a lot of people, she has a variation dedicated to Jade. Understand that we have two characters in one.

4. Quan Chi
I strongly believe that he will be up there in the ranks. Variation wise, I see any Variation as icing on the cake to this character. As in, he doesn't need it.

5. Kotal Kahn
I'm looking forward to see how much of a power house this guy will be. And his origin/story wise, he was not what I expect it to be. I find it to be quite interesting to the point that, besides Mileena, these are the only characters I'm curious to know what happens to them in their story which is something I haven't cared for in a long time.

BOTTOM 5

1. Jax.
Jax's gameplay from MK9 felt like he was overlooked and lacked variety to me, mainly in the combo department and just felt like you can't do anything but rely on superman punches and air grabs.
MK9, as a game itself, truly felt like they tried their hardest with every character to make them good with their gameplay, even the underdogs. But Jax, just didn't cut it. I really have no faith in Jax's gameplay in Mortal Kombat X. If they couldn't deliver in MK9, I don't see how they could deliver with three variations.

2. N/A

3. Erron Black
I just hate his character design. Make him a gunslinger, that's cool, but damn, don't be unoriginal and cliche with the character design by making him a straight up Cowboy. Here's hoping to his alternate.

4. N/A

5. Shinnok
I'm just disappointed in the lack of a system variation that would have him summon skeleton warriors into play, after Qaun Chi failing to deliver. "No, I can just summon a fucking bat, though".

Imagine how let down I was when I saw the name "Necromancer" and saw that it had nothing to do with what I hoped for? Don't get me wrong, the ground hands needed to return but still.

Top 5:
1. Johnny Cage. Also surprised me, I like the fisticuffs and how he can still (from what it looks like) keep pressure on.

2. Kung Jin. He surprised me, and as a couple of other people mentioned the staff variation looked pretty cool.

3. Kitana. Has always been one of my favourites, but I feel she hasn't been improved as much as say, Johnny Cage has this time around. That said, I really like her new outfit, but I am still iffy about her game play.

4. D'Vorah. I like how different she looks. It is hard to judge what anyone's gameplay will be like, but I think DVorah will be second new character I try.

5. Ferra/Torr. I kind of liked Bane in Injustice and it looks like he plays similar. Some of their comments make me laugh, I think I would have fun throwing the little girl around.

Bottom 5

1. Liu Kang. Not impressed with the way his game play looks so far. No major improvements from what I've seen, and I think they could have done something cooler with his Dualist variation.

2. Cassie Cage. Cassie looks cool, I like the attitude, but I don't know about the game play. None of the variations sound overly appealing. I will definitely try her out but I'm not expecting her to be one of my favourites.

3. Raiden. I don't see anything awesome and new here either. The teleporting and storm trap variations seem cool, but I'm not overly impressed so far.

4. Reptile. Again nothing that really caught my eye and impressed me. I actually thought the differences in his variations were kind of cool, how they only make a small difference but could potentially change the way you play him.

5. I dont know, I like a lot of the characters so far, even these ones on my bottom I have mostly something positive to say about lol. For the record that means that Liu Kang is my least favourite, and so on.

Top 5:

1. Kotal Kahn - very excited to see what Ogre from Tekken will do in MK.
2. Shinnok- my favorite villain in all the series, now with Maleficent horns!
3. Sub Zero- what can I say, I never get tired of down, forward, x.
4. Erron Black- intrigued to see what this gunslinger's variations will be.
5. Tremor- was ambivalent about him before, but he looks legit.

Special shout out for Reiko, Havik, and Fujin!

Bottom 5:

1. Sonya Blade- we have Cassie now, mom needs a break.
2. Johnny Cage- I honestly hate his new voice and look.
3. D'Vorah- not really feeling her design.
4. Liu Kang- you got really killed in Mk9, sit this one out. Also you're still boring.
5. Kung Jin- generic new hero family member #4.

Top 5 :

1. Sonya Blade.... I am a fan off her since mk1 and always loved her moves and always mained her in every game.

2. Cassie Cage.... I love her personality and her gameplay looks interesting.

3. Takeda.... Don't know Why but his gameplay really got me excited for him. His moveset also looks badass.

4. Kitana.... I really kicked ass with her in mk9 so i hope she stays the same.

5. Liu Kang / Johnny Cage.... This one is a tie because i usually main them because they are the original kombatants. Although i must say Liu Kang looks underwhelming.

6. Tanya.... Made one for the dlc. Most looking forward for her. But if Fujin is in i Will also defenitly main him.

Bottom 5 :

1. Scorpion..... Tired of him always being frontrunner like he is something special.

2. Sub-Zero..... Same as scorpion but he seems a little more interesting this time around.

3. Ferra/Torr.... Don't know Why but i am not at all interested playing them. I Will for the ending but dreading it.

4. Raiden.... I started to dislike him in the last game. He completly lost his mind and his moves are meh to me to.

5. Goro.... As fun as it is playing as him i Would never main him just because he is so slow.

Jacqui
Cassie/D'Vorah
Erron Black
Ferra-Torr
Too many to name for the fifth spot.

Bottom

Scorpion
Liu Kang (I like him as a character, but his gameplay's a bit boring)
Sub-Zero
No one to name for the last two spots yet.

In between: Johnny. He looks fun, but he's not at his most entertaining gameplay-wise, imo. Underwhelming low-blow, and an X-ray that any martial artist could have had, in short it doesn't feel Johnny-esque enough.

I'd also add Kung Jin to this "in between" list. He's distinctive, but not as much as he seemed at first.

I cannot add the DLCs to any list yet, but I like all of them as characters. I so hope Jason and the Predator deliver, gameplay-wise, as it's both their first official appearance as guests in a fighting game.
