I've seen people around these forums say something to this affect. Many people feel like families playing a big part of the story is somehow not fitting for MK, and even a bit cheesy. I just created this thread to call bullocks to this notion.
So, this is Mortal Kombat, not Family Feud?
I'd like to remind people of a few things...
Scorpion, since day 1, has been on a mission of vengeance for the murder of his clan and FAMILY, specifically his wife and child.
He spared the life of what turned out to be Sub-Zero's younger BROTHER.
Kitana was introduced in MKII as the DAUGHTER of Shao Kahn. Introduced alongside her was Mileena, her TWIN SISTER.
Also introduced in MKII was Kung Lao, DESCENDANT of the Great Kung Lao and COUSIN to Liu Kang.
In Mortal Kombat 3 we were introduced to Kitana's MOTHER, Sindel.
Rain, who was introduced in the Sega port of UMK3, as it turns out is the SON of Edenian god Argus.
The main plot of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon revolved around the other two SONS of Argus, Taven and Daegon.
Aaaaand, in the first Mortal Kombat movie, the entire plot revolved around Liu Kang wanting to avenge the death of his younger brother at the hands of Shang Tsung.
Family has always played a large part in MK, for those of you who have been complaining about descendants. They are just a bigger, more obvious focus in this game because it's the first 'passing of the torch' type MK game we have had, covering a 25 year timeline.
That is all I wanted to say. Thanks for your time.

Yeah that's why I don't understand some of the descendent complaints, some people are acting as if MK has never had family members in it before or something.
I don't think anybody has a problem with character's back stories involving family. I don't think that has ever been an issue, to be honest. I don't know what group of people you are addressing. I think some people have a problem with the idea of entire families being playable, like the Cages if they all make it in.

I remember seeing this type of complaining in the topic I made before about, 'how many descendants do you think there will be in MKX'. And I just saw Denizen complaining about descendants on another thread on here, which inspired me to make this topic.
Also, what is wrong with having a father, mother and daughter playable? It's not like the entire game is going to be made up of nuclear family units.

I think because this game has variations, Johhny and Sonya won't be playable, and i love johnny cage, but I'm fine with that for one game as long as she doesn't completely replace them.
Besides Cassie though , i dont see any of the other descendants coming even close to replacing their older relatives. Takeda is trained by Scorpion, Jacqui is a kickboxer, and we know nothnig about kung jin(or of hes even real) but its a fighting game with multiple shaolin monks, it;ll be fine

I can take or leave Sonya but I'm going to be disappointed if Johnny does not make it into this game. He is perhaps my favorite all time character(he was DEFINITELY my favorite when I was a kid), and he NEEDS to be playable after his MK9 ending. My body is ready for a more badass, MKX version of Johnny(but still with the attitude and his quips, of course, not all super serious 100% of the time).

We only had three Earthrealm heroes survive MK9. I will be completely ticked if only one of them is playable. That would be throwing the story in the garbage. I love the MK story and really don't want it to be an afterthought when they do these games.

That's the other thing here. It seems completely idiotic to have Johnny and Sonya as the only two surviving alongside Raiden at the end only for neither of them to be playable in MKX.

Kinda why and how Cassie came along though
i mean if johnny is in ill be estatic since he's my favorite, but i'm fine waiting till Mk 11 ( 2 games in a row without him would be totally uncool though) to play him

Ah, I'm probably just outta the loop. I think descendants are a great way to progress the story. And as far as having the full family playable, I love the way NRS designs characters and I'm sure they would all be unique and fun to play as. BUT, it is kinda corny to have a father and mother and daughter all participating in a tournament to the death. It just has like a really weird, demented Brady Bunch vibe to it thats corny and waters down the "darkness" of the game imo. Any movie or show that has a whole family solving mysteries or fighting bad guys together is just inherently lame and too kid friendly to me. Who knows tho, maybe NRS can pull it off.

Hopefully he was just making a Family Feud joke as if Shao Kahn was the host.

It's not completely about families fighting together, but that's the most compelling facet of this game to the casual audience, so it's the most-advertised. The passing of the torch we're gonna see between the old and the new generations is what this game is all about. I think NRS' vision for MK11 is for the new generation to be the new protagonists. Johnny, Sonya, Kenshi, Jax, Liu Kang and Kung Lao will physically and symbolically retire, while Cassie, Jacqui, Takeda and Kung Jin will take up the mantle and begin their own adventures. MKX is the bridge where both generations interact in an effort to help the fanbase adjust to the new generation and let go of the old.

Actually I like that we have family members of older characters. It makes the game new and fresh.

Duh!
Now I get it.
I believe most of the complains were addressing something else, people didn't criticize having bonds or descending within the story as part of the plot but to having a whole family playable, simultaneously, since the beginning, it can be cheesy and having family members ripping each other apart in gruesome ways is something not all people might feel comfortable with, even Boon mentioned that earlier.
Personally, I'm not that much bothered by this, is just fact that having Sonja, Cage and Cassie playable in the same game seems kinda redundant to me (not that it necessarily has to be), since the latter already has moves and styles that reference their parents. Would much rather have some completely unrelated character with a unique moveset.
Also, wouldn't call the decision of leaving out the last survivors from MK9 after 25 years idiotic, it all depends how it's handled, imo, "passing the torch to the younger gen" is something not that uncommon in videogames, killing a bunch of characters just to have them back, playable and revealed from the start however...

In my opinion, family sometimes makes things cooler like Sub-Zero finding out Noob Saibot is his undead brother, epic.

Honestly, this might be the best method for introducing a new cast and let the old ones go without everyone going insane about it. Gotta slowly ease into the ice water, can't just jump in.
It's a cool plot idea. I mean they kinda like just started over with MK9 so this is in a way the new MK4, if you consider MK9 as the new MK-MK3. How would you guys follow up MK9 if this game had not been revealed yet and we only knew that it was in development?
