Back before the most recent MK game, there wasn't a dedicated "story mode" where actual events played out during the experience. During these times, you had to use the story intro, character bios and arcade endings to glean just what was happening, what had happened and also what had NOT happened.

What's nice about a story mode as that it takes a lot of the guess work out of MK timeline. Instead of simply having Liu Kang winning two tournaments, Khan invading Earth, etc, you really got the sense that, through story mode, many of the characters took action, fought battles and had canon endings (for better or worse).

The problem I have with this though, is that while I LOVE the idea of a coherent story mode, the arcade endings in this same game have virtually nothing to do with it.

They're still the same "what if" endings for each character. Some of them even linked together, like how in Liu Kang and Shang Tsung's ending, both have Liu Kang becoming a god and unseating Raiden.

So my question to you is this: How would you fix arcade endings? Would yo make them canon, so the we get even more of a picture of what happens? Do you think it's possible since it's not like every character will ACTUALLY defeat the final boss?

Would you keep arcade endings separate then, as they always have been? Keep them "what if" or is there some way around the whole idea of beating the boss in arcade mode to see the ending? Would you want to explore that idea?

Let me know what you think!

I'm all for making them canon. I think it would be an interesting idea to see what happened to characters after story mode. Like what exactly did Raiden, Johnny, and Sonya do after the invasion? Johnny's and Sonya's look like they could be canon-ish but it's still uncertain.

I think NRS should use the arcade endings to further the story. For instance maybe show Mileena's rise to power in Outworld as her ending. That is if she does become the ruler of Outworld.

I liked in the old days when we used to have to wait till the next game to see which endings came true.I liked how Deception have it. The Konquest was like a story mode, as in having the story played out as the players do the quest but it ended without giving a specific endings. So we still played the arcade and speculate on who's the true winner. Armageddon was disappointed as it did ended with Taven defeat Blaze. I'm still confuse what really happened in Armageddon ending. Did Shao Kahn just win and defeated Blaze. Or was Taven ending true, in that every warriors just became that much powerful, and that Shao Kahn emerges from them all.

But I think the reason why story mode was most effective for MK9 was because we pretty much know how the story is already, since it's base on the events of MK1-3, most of us already know about it. From what I see, not much have changed, especially leading to the next game. Shinnok will still try to take over.

So the next game will incorporate what was MK4 going forward. I think unless they really change up the next set of story line, I am expecting story mode finish again. However, whether story mode or not. I still enjoy playing the arcade, and I think some endings may work together. Maybe not the part, where character x beat the main boss, but some of the surrounding facts.
