yes. obviously she served onaga in deception, but was that substantial enough to give her all these dragon references in mka and now mkx which has had no mention of onaga at all? im not convinced

That and fire are really the only things she has. She was never really developed outside of Deception.

true, but she also has edenian and the whole ambassadors daughter thing, plus some sorcery (via invisibity and formerly 'purple fire').

maybe some sort of tie in where her father (the edenian ambassador) was allies with Onaga back in the day since both lived so long ago or depending on her age she, as a child she was taught under Onaga's rule or something, as her dad had some alliance with him

It's funny you should mention that because I don't know what it is about this game but I feel like Tanya is a lot older than Kitana. Not necessarily Sindel old but like that she has at least 5,000 years on her lol.

The thing is Edenians don't have clear abilities. They all seem vaguely magical but that's kind of a wide thing to work with. Teleportation? They seem to have an affinity for that. Wind? Sindel can fly and Kitana's fan lift how looks like a magic wind storm. Actually I suppose Rain fits into that too with the whole storm thing.

I'd hoped they'd latch onto the whole sorceress angle that fans seemed to like and hype up.

That's the wonder of not being too specific with the abilities of certain fictional species/races, they can give pretty much any character any power and it can work lol
