I'm just wondering, has anyone else been assuming that some kharacters would initially only be NPCs in story mode and become available as DLC later? There are quite a few returning characters for whom it would make sense to be featured in this game's story mode but there may not be room for all of them on the initial roster. So I've always assumed some characters would start off as NPCs in story mode and be available for download later.

Anyone else? Does this make sense?

It could work, especially since it'd mean the DLC characters would be part of the story, unlike the DLC characters of MK9 and Injustice.

Absolutely I think this will happen. The first kharacters that come to mind are Cage and Sonya. With the story of MKX picking up right where MK9 left off, it's easy to assume they're going to be a fairly big part of story mode, at least in the beginning. I think NRS would want Cassie to take center stage over her parents in this game because she's the new kid on the block, but no one really knows at this point. If Cage and Sonya aren't on the initial playable roster, it's reasonable to assume one or both can be added later as DLC if enough fans demand it.

I expect this to happen with the less popular kharacters as well. NRS can get a good feel for who the fans want to see show up as DLC after some kameos in story mode. It's a great way to going about it.

I really hope this is there approach in MKX. I think it is definitely a possibility considering the backlash NRS got for not including (especially Rain) the dlc characters in the story.

The backlash for Rain is probably not significant.

If there will be a demo leak, like with MK9 it should not be a problem to discern who has coded moves etc.

However, NPC characters, like Sonya or Cage (if they are not playable but are in the story mode)still require some space, textures and other assorted stuff tends to take up place. I would not expect many NPC's though.

MK9 basically rehashed the classic ninja/monk/female ninja template at every possibility.

Care to elaborate as to why? I'm not a gaming snob so I have no idea what you are referring to.

That is very true. In MK9 they did not bother with designing characters much outside of the main roster. The rest were henchmen.

You can argue that in MK9 the story revolved solely around the main roster. Where as in MKX, who knows where the story will take us. And since the roster size obviously cannot fit the every mk character we can hope to see more cameo's, and therefore: NPC's.

But your point is still very valid, it will be interesting to see if NRS continues the theme with NPC's being cookie-cutter filler henchmen and have the story revolve solely around the roster.

For some reason I have a feeling that NRS will make this story-mode truly in depth, and not skimp on things such as NPC design. Or at least that is my hope.

But yes, it brings up problems when people are clamoring to play an NPC character because their design is so fantastic. NRS essentially creates a catch-22 for themselves. Unless they anticipate this and feature the NPC's as DLC where they have more time and fiscal means to complete full move-sets and variation balancing after release but essentially have the primary costume already complete.

Even if in demand, NRS will put in who they want and not who we want.

Pass, the PC version will have them available after mods are developed by the fan base. I only want a Rain skin to replace SZ.

DLC is unimportant to me, as I want energy to be directed towards making classic modern stages. I would hate for stage fatalities to be pushed aside when they have a lot of potential.

Plus, many story mode NPCs would be tough to balance online, unless they had their own restrictions separating them from the main roster. Why do people think that all of those who have appeal in the story necessarily have what it takes to be included within the the main roster? Are we talking about pitting people like Blanche against champions? I imagine a separate roster screen would be needed to pick purely DLC match ups so that comical or interesting generic realm fighters can fight each other.

I think most people are talking about NPC's that are in fact past characters of the franchise. For example: fujin appearing in the story mode and then later appears for DLC

I don't think so, sounds like a money grabbing move, I'm not a fan of disk locked content. Asking for DLC (real extra content) characters that play an important role in the story sounds unrealistic.

Those are all background sprites, not characters from cutscenes.

The cutscenes in MKvsDCU, MK9, and Injustice's story modes are ACTUALLY just videos the game plays, they're not rendered in real-time, despite the fact that they LOOK like they use in-game graphics.

So for example, the army soldier you see in that video isn't one from the scene where Cyber-Sub frees them from the clocktower, it's from the monster fight in the background of the Bridge stage. That's why it's so low-res.
Another example of what I mean: you'll see Kahn wearing his vsDCU costume at the beginning of MK9 Story Mode in that scene where he's beating up Dark Raiden atop the pyramid. And you'll see Motaro during cutscenes too. But neither of those things are actually on the disk to hack into and play as on PC. Because the cutscenes were video files. Those models exist on NRS's computers and were used to make animated videos, but they're not in the game. (You could theoretically import that Kahn skin over from MKvsDCU though...)
In MKvsDCU, Quan Chi appears in story mode, but he's not actually a character in the game. He WAS going to be released as DLC, but MKvsDC's DLC was cancelled due to Midway going out of business. THIS is the sort of thing MKX could do, have many characters appear in the cutscenes who AREN'T on-disk and then release them later, because 3D models of them will have to be made anyway.

Nice point, but I'm just saying...

If Johnny Cage is story mode only, as we are now lead to believe.
And you have a moment where you play as him and fight Cassie as stated by one of the NRS members in an interview back in August?, and if he's not a playable roster character, PC modders are gonna be on it immediately while some console players get salty because they had to pay $.
Same goes for any other MK character that you fight against in the story that's not playable in vs modes.

Ed implied that Johnny and Cassie would be able to do fatalities to each other.

There's no finishers in Story Modes, it would break the fourth wall.

I don't know when we were "led to believe" Johnny would be an NPC, I haven't heard anything about that...
