From German Gamepro magazine:

"Not only have we seen the MK series grow up, but we will see some well-known aging heroes. In conversation, Ed Boon told us that there will actually be several versions of Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Liu Kang. Liu Kang?" (Something here like "but sure," "safe bet," IDK.) "Make no mistake about it: although the Shaolin monk has not been announced, the poster-boy of Mortal Kombat will certainly be playable."

"The aged heroes, according to Boon, will differ not only in appearance from their younger versions, but will also play differently, and will master moves" (something here like "used in the other incarnations").

This makes it sound like some of the human characters, like Sonya, would get different variations based on their age.

Now this screenshot from the Story trailer, shows a character laying on the floor, which many people have speculated that it may be Sonya (vest, boots, blonde hair, ponytail, fingerless gloves). That scene takes place during Shinnok's invasion, which would be only a shot period of time after the events of MK9, and would be Sonya's youngest variation:

Now this recently leaked screenshot from the story mode, shows an aged Sonya (that still doesn't look too old) wearing the costume she's wearing in the comics, which takes place 15 years after MK9:

FInally, this screenshot from the Generations trailer, shows Sonya's portrait from the factions mode, she looks the oldest here, and is wearing a beret instead of the cap she wears in the comic, i think this may be the oldest variation, and that she may had been promoted within the special forces:

But this is only speculation, what do you think?

I think Cassie > Grandma Sonya grin

Seriously though, i have no idea. I do recall Boon or somebody saying something about age being a factor in some variations a while back so its possible and it would make sense storywise.

Things might have changed since that old interview. At some point they wanted different costumes assigned to variations but then decided to make them different skins as to not restrain players. I don't remember the exact interview tho.

I think we'll see the younger/aged versions as costumes that will be used throughout the story mode's time span. At least I hope so. I find aged version as visual cues for variations kinda silly considering all the one's we've seen so far are so much more subtle.

I'm totally with you.

Think about how restricting it'd be to have such blatant visual departures depending on the variation. I'd want to play as the younger Sonya most often, but maybe her "Young" variation doesn't have the moves and tactical advantage that suits my play style.

Also think about the pure oddity of having an intro of Sonya Vs. Cassie where Sonya looks as young as her daughter. You know their dialogue will relate to their--well, relation...ship...It would be very off-putting if they could suddenly look the same while speaking to each other.

I'm hoping and betting that her model will be the same throughout all three variations with only subtle costume changes, and then in Story Mode, they'll have her go through transitions to suit the passage of time. I also doubt her playable model will be very aged; you'll be able to tell she's older, sure, but I doubt NRS would de-sexify one of their females by any means.
I feel like Jax/Sonya/Special Forces types would have alt costumes that are different ages rather than their variations changing their age.

Sonya and Jax's variations probably change their gear with slightly different miliary esque things, like berets or Jax's arms looking different with each one, which would be dope.
