Sonya is in MK9.

Keep in mind people that this doesn't rule out MK9 being a reboot. If it is (which I am hoping), it would make perfect sense for Sonya to be back.
Fingers crossed.

I'm guessing a reboot roster would look like this:
1. Subzero
2. Scorpion
3. Reptile
4. Raiden
5. Sonya
6. Kano
7. Liu Kang
8. Johnny Cage
Hidden: Ermac
What we have here is a modern fighting game, a game made in 2010, that only has 8 or 9 playable characters. Even if you force in Shang Tsung, Goro, and Kung Lao, that's still only 12 characters. If you add more, it'll change the story fundamentally, making this less a reboot and more a re-envisioning. I'm finding myself less and less interested in a reboot every time I consider it.

I still hate that the next MK game is being referring to as MK9, but anyway, I'm not the least bit surprised that Sonya will return. I do have to wonder what kind of game this next installment is. If it's after MK: Armageddon, then I'm still not surprised that Sonya is returning.
As a character, I was never really a fan of her, and I'm still not a fan of her. She needs to really develop as a character and have an interesting story. Unfortunately, she only really comes off as the stereotypical "tough chick". I get that she's a lieutenant in the military, but we don't get a sense of various facets to her character.
However, I think it's much more likely that they'll just stick with her as she is without any real sense of development.

as a fan since the get go and an all around gamer of many genres...the only way i would even like to consider excepting a reboot is if they did a full on reboot of the story from MK1 to MKA all in one game. that would be the only way i would want it...otherwise just move on with what we got. what i just read above makes me ill...a next gen MK with only 8 fighters? SF4 made that mistake and now they are trying to comeback on that with SSF4 adding in more that should have been in the first one. imo nahh...just nahh.

You could be onto something there. They could go the route of making a simple story to reintroduce the characters to us (not just Sonya) and so keep them similar as they were previously before taking them on a new journey that gets fleshed out more fully in the follow up game(s). They'd have to lay the groundwork out for this in the new game and make it believable.
