As long as Jason is canon (and you'll never convince me he isn't), it's all good.

I can understand them having human forms but it kind of doesn't make sense for Liu and Lao to have aged primaries. But they had to have them if they wanted to show off the characters before release and not spoil anything.

Well you could say that about every villain in the last game not named Shao Kahn, Sindel, and Quan Chi. You could say it for a few in this game as well. I don't think a more minimal/supporting role should exclude you from being in the playable roster.

Agreed, but that didn't stop them excluding Fujin, Rain etc. and saving Tanya for DLC when they all appear to have larger roles in the story than Kitana and co.

As much as I like Kitana, it's certain people obsessing over their favorites not returning Kitana and the Kung Fu twins could have been Tanya without DLC, Fujin, and Rain. Make them DLC at least.

Safety more than anything sadly. I'm actually really frustrated by the roster. The cameos are honestly just painful reminders of the cast that honestly should have been...and still might but only if we pay up for more DLC if they decide to do a second Kombat Pack.

I had guessed Kitana's living form was a non-canon alt to throw us off months ago, when I began to realize that we hadn't seen, nor heard, nor even been teased with an ounce of story involving a living Kitana in present day. In point of fact, the ONLY footage we'd seen of her from story at all was a still undead Kitana fighting an adult Cassie, in a 3rd costume that WASN'T the one NRS had suggested to us was her main OR her alt.

And they flat out TOLD us in a Kombat Kast that some of the costumes we'd seen and assumed to be mains, were in fact actually alts.

I brought up the idea in other threads that the living costume could just be a fan-service alt, like Liu Kang's living costume in MKD. People said, "Well her mournful variation proves she gets ressurected! Or else why would she mourn!?" and I said, "It's just a variation name. Those don't have to be canon. Cassie doesn't have to be a Movie Star just because she has a Hollywood variation. Sub-Zero doesn't have to be Grandmaster. (Though turns out he is)).

So hey, I feel vindicated.

I didn't suspect Kung Lao because I thought he was somehow tied into Kung Jin's present day story, and was obviously aged. Which I guess was just to throw us off.

I didn't think too hard into Liu Kang either because he'd only been recently revealed, and again, the aged thing.

After all these leaks and spoilers, I find it very disappointing that Kitana doesn't have a story in MKX. NRS has really shit on a lot of fans with these past two games.

I've been defending the roster since Jax was revealed, but ever since these last few leak streams I've come to realise how badly NRS fucked up. Liu Kang and Kung Lao being old was fucking pointless. Those two and Kitana should have been NPCs, with Revenant Liu as an unlockable (maybe) whereas Jax (as much as I love him) shoudn't have been playable but an NPC. Liu, Lao, Kitana and Jax should have all been replaced by Fujin, Tanya, Rain and Sareena. People who we know have something to do with the story. 'Safe' is the nicest way to talk about the roster. It's more like NRS bending over to the casuals and tourney players faves. I'll enjoy the roster for what it is, but it'll be bitter to see Rain and Fujin in story mode and imagining what SHOULD have been. There's always MK11 though

Hell they could've still have added Tanya, Fujin, Rain and maybe Baraka without replacing anyone. That would've took the roster to 28 pre-DLC. I don't see how that would've been too much considering its the same roster number as MK9 and including DLC we're at 28 now....

It's just confusing to have Mileena be this big antagonist with Tanya and Rain as her two right hand men that you battle throughout storymode only to have Tanya and Rain not even be in the actual roster while other characters who aren't even bringing anything to the story are seen in promotions and on the initial roster front and center.

Even if Fujin, Tanya, Rain and others made it in as DLC- it would still feel odd having characters who are playing huge roles in the story be "bonus". Just 'really odd. Especially considering characters like Kang, Lao, and Jax would have been ideal for DLC considering their minimal roles and the amount of huge sales they'd do.

Idk. It boggles the mind with the roster choices. I just thank the sweet Lord above for DLC. They have a shot of at least trying to make up for their odd choices. I really hope they use it. Tanya is a good start...but not enough.

I don't think any characters should've replaced any others lol. We can't have Jax AND Kitana AND Fujin AND Tanya. It's 2015 NRS has a publisher that gives them the time to make a really great product by their own admission. The excuse that they maybe didn't have time or went to develop other things really doesn't hold up since they clearly always planned to have some characters in the game. Mainly Tanya and Li Mei.

That said it's more than just story that dictates who becomes playable. Kitana holistically was going to be in. Fan fav, developer fav, casual fav, AND tournament/competitive fav? She'll probably always be in regardless of her roll in the story which seems largely similar to Tanya's until the set up at the end.

Really we should be directing our fury at Kano lol.

Oracle, do not worry, I LOVE Kitana and as much as I might be a hypocrite for this, I wouldn't have changed Kitana's inclusion. Mainly because she's literally the best she has ever been, looks wise, attitude wise, and move wise. So I'm biased lol But yeah, Kitana I don't mind, but it's characters like Jax, Lao, and Kang that grate on the nerves. I really don't think Jax fans would've "raged" if he was kept as DLC considering not too many people were demanding his return anyway.


But yes, Kano is another that could've definitely be saved as DLC. *facepalm* But as you said, we could've had everyone without any changes or replacements- different day and age.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I'm a Kitana fan and I'm glad she's in. BUT I can't help thinking why they didn't save her for the kombat pack and add Tanya in the main game - Kitana is far more iconic and would sell a lot better among fans and casuals alike. Same goes for Liu Kang and Kung Lao etc over Fujin, Li Mei (if they become DLC).

That way everyone would have been happy - we get lots of 3D characters reimagined and playable out of the box, and the promise of our iconic favourites as DLC as incentives for their hardcore fans to buy the game straight away.

I should have vocally predicted that so I could boast I was right! Lol. Once we were getting story trailers, it became apparent that Liu, Kung, and Kitana were going to stay revenants the entire game. I'm not surprised to hear that.

Now I wonder what makes Jax so special and this is grating as Sub Zero could have been Bi Han too. The ninjas aren't going to go away anyway since they're the Ryu and Ken of the series.

Honestly, based on what I've seen of story; this could've been the roster and could've been better just by a few simple changes;
