Aztec Greek God?

Raiden refers to the sun when addressing Kotal and the sun was the most important part of Aztec culture. The Aztecs believed that the heart of a person was a part of the sun for example.

I don't think that's Quan Chi's last name...same for Shao Kahn actually.

Is Kang a last name? It's not just donned on my how weird it is that if they ARE last names people keep never refer to them as just their first names.confused

I can take Quan-Chi out of the equation seeing is name is originally hyphenated. As for Liu, Sony, Shang and Johnny those are their last names ( Kang, Blade, Tsung and Cage) in general.

I do understand what you are saying though.

People repeatedly refer to lui, sonya, shang, and johnny by just there first names. I believe all other names are only first names or titles (aka scorpion, reptile, subzero). Jackson Briggs going by his nickname jax. Kurtis Stryker going by his callsign (and i guess last name) stryker, and can anyone remember where kabal's name originated from? I think they went over it during mk9 story mode. Pretty much only humans have first and last names. And I believe Shang is a human sorcerer correct?

That's my point. Shang Tsung is human, that's why I added him. I didn't add Jax because I know he went by that in the games. Same goes for Stryker. Stryker is more of a Swat/riot name, so they went with it instead of his full name.

Yepp. my comment was meant to back your comment, not sure if I came across that way or not.

Kotal just looks like a total badass that there's no need for him to need a tie to Shao Kahn to make him stand-out.

I hope his story is something along the lines he is now an Emperor that oppresses that people of Outworld, he is cruel and evil but very intelligent. Love the way he talks, too.

It was the dialogue between raiden and kotal that really made me like the character. The way he said "temporarily"; i was like woa

Bumping this thread in light of the recent possibilities regarding Kotal's potential connections to Shao.

If Kotal ends up being Shao's son, and is revealed to have been raised on earth, it could mean that Kotal is like Taven, Daegon and Rain, with a god as one of his parent, and a human woman (Edenian in Rain's case) as his mother. As for how that could have happened, the mother could have been a Mayan who deserted for Outworld (or pretended to), and that Kahn liked enough to have intimate interractions with. It's not like Shao is asexual, after all. It's possible that the mother then betrayed Shao and went back to Earth, with Shao unaware that she was pregnant.

The mother might have planned to use her own half-god son to eventually achieve power.

I realize that this theory doesn't explain everything, like why would Kotal, being raised in the Mayan culture and thus being old, would have waited so long before trying to seize Outworld, but again, it's just a possibility.

They specifically used the term "demon" so apparently he is an evil diety. But how would you explain that in terms of being Shao's offspring? Did shao kahn mate with an earthrealm demon?

What about Kotal's mother? Maybe she's in the game too?

That would be something...

This is gonna be really interesting speculation untill the game is being released. Kotal ́s origins became very much a thing since we know he ́s Shao ́s son!

Shao Kahn was thousands of year old and so it leads me to believe that creatures from his species also take a very long time to grow up and mature. And MKX takes place over a span of 25 years which is relatively small time for his race/species. If Kotal is his son then where was he during EarthRealm invasion. I know he could have been kept secret by Emperor's order or not.

Wow, I'm amazed by own nerd-ness.

Drop the "Kahn" and just call him Kotal. Besides, not every character in MK has or will have a last name.

Johnny Cage
Liu Kang
Shang Tsung
Quan Chi
Shao Kahn

These are the only characters that have had their first and last names used in the MK fighter series (above/in/under the power bar).

So, it's not really important for Kotal to have the name "Kahn". However, it will be staying just for the fact that he is ruler of Outworld.

If Liu Kang is on that list, Kung Lao should be too; and the announcer called her Sonya Blade when she won.

I hope Kotal Kahn's mother is the Boss of the game (the real threat), while Kahn is more of a entitled Emperor who is more egotistical than threatening.

So he can be half/half? Earthrealm Aztec mother(goddess maybe?) and Outworld ruler father? That would make him interesting.

Another possibility that could explain why Kotal is only just now coming into the picture is because he might have tried to overthrow his father at one point, so Shao, to make an example of him, had him imprisoned, perhaps even banished to the netherrealm, as a way to tell others who are even thinking of betraying him that if he's willing to banish his own son to hell, imagine what he'd do to people who aren't his flesh and blood.

I don't see the resemblance between Kotal and Shao as related. Just because they're "big and muscular" doesn't automatically speak father-son relationship. Also it's important to mention that Ed Boon himself confirmed on his Twitter (probably in some other thread) that Kotal is NOT Shao Kahn's son. I'm sorry if I'm stuck between believing the game creator's statement and a foreign magazine's "info" on an American game, I'm going to pick the fucking guy who made the game in the moment.

Also, you'd think that Kahn's physical features, his traits being dominant in the offspring (yes people I HAD to bring genetics into an MK game, but boo-boo you're reading it anyway) would appear in Kotal Kahn...they do NOT.

Firstly, I don't remember blue skin being on Kahn so that's one point taken off the relationship. Next is the eyes. In MK 2011 we remember that Shao Kahn's were orange with slit pupils. Kotal Kahn, on the other hand has circular pupils that change red, orange or yellow depending on the variation. Second line of evidence for Kahn's connection destroyed.

"Wait krajax! What about his spike head? Kotal Kahn has an Aztec helmet covering his entire topside that can potentially cover up spikes like Shao Kahn's?"

Good point then. If Kotal Kahn can have his helmet off, we both can have the chance to found out whether the father-son hypothesis gets thrown out or adds support to it. However until then, this strange coincidence doesn't add weight to the speculation. If you compare of these images of Shao and Kotal side-by-side you can tell that they have NO facial similarities at all

Shao Kahn
Kotal Kahn

So until further game info disproves this analysis otherwise, my conclusion states that there's no definite proof or evidence that Kotal Kahn is the son of the late emperor Shao Kahn.
