I'm more surprised it outsold Arkham Knight. That was probably the one I was betting on being the biggest seller since it's such a critically acclaimed franchise and everyone seems to have reignited their love of Batman these days.

The game was shit compared to the other 3 but still, expected it to blow the competition away.
so arkham knight isn't as good as Aarkham city or origins? I thought I made a big mistake by getting elder scrolls online instead of arkham knight at launch, I like ESO, it's a good game overall. Being a huge marital arts fan & practitioner is why I loved the Batman games so much, to see Batman fuckin wreck some noobs with some spinning kicks and nice throws. I'm definitely gonna get it eventually, probably when the full version comes out. I bet the horrible PC launch definitely put a huritin on arkham knights sales numbers

I'm surprised no one is mentioning GTA 5 is still pulling down sales like that, it's unbelievable how much money that game has made. Hell I bought it midnight release for ps3 then got it for ps4 when I bought mine back in January. not to even mention the fucking crazy amount of microtransactions they have made. Can someone please find some data on this, I bet they've made half a billion just from in game currency purchases

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about.

"Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is the game topping the mid-year list. Mortal Kombat has been around for some 25 years —and while there is still a strong fan base for the game, it wasn’t expected to be the best-selling title in the first half of the year. "

here is the top 10, MK was released in mid April so its managed to top the list in just two and half months.

"The best selling games of the first half of 2015 are as follows:

1) Mortal Kombat X (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
2) Grand Theft Auto V (Publisher: Take-Two Interactive Software)
3) Battlefield Hardline (Publisher: Electronic Arts)
4) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Publisher: Activision)
5) Minecraft (Publisher: Microsoft)
6) Batman: Arkham Knight (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
7 )Dying Light (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
8) NBA 2K15 (Publisher: Take-Two Interactive Software)
9) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Publisher: CD Projekt Red)
10)Super Smash Bros. (Publisher: Nintendo)"

I'd expect NRS to keep on supporting the game with Paid/Free DLC for some time.

To be fair and honest, its not really a surprise, at least to me. Look at the Top 10 games on that list.

GTAV- A game that wasn't new and came out OVER a year ago.
BF:Hardline- BF4 launch issues probably hurt that franchise a lot and the new direction, a lot of fans weren't sold on it.
COD: AW- From what I hear, the weakest COD release and it also came out last year in Nov, I'm sure that total sales is absurdly high.
Minecraft- Game is like 8 years old it seems like. I'm surprised it STILL sales as well as it does, granted the fact its on just about every device imaginable.
Batman: Arkham Knight-Game has been out a month
Dying Light- Special niche type of game. Surprised its in the Top 10
NBA 2K15- Makes sense. Great basketball game. Hell I actually purchased it in Feb. I normally get it every 3-4 years.
Witcher 3- Doesn't appeal to everyone. But glad it made it in the Top 10
SSB- Thought it would've been higher, but then again, not many people have a WiiU

Please factor in that MKX:

Launched only 2.5 months ago

MKX launched only on PS4 and Xbone whose install base is limited. Pc launch was botched

NPD sales do not take into account digital download

Therefore, nobody expected a fighting game dominate so decisively and were surprised as to the result.

I agree with most of what you said, except the above quote.
Mortal Kombat II is STILL the only game ever launched in the US in which people lined up in the streets to pick up on console launch. And lots of those cuatomers got nothing. That used to be common practice in Japan for new Final Fantasy games and such, but it only happened once in the US. MK 1 &2 were proverbial monster hits for their time, even more so than COD is today if you think about how many less games and gamers there were, back then.
