It would be quite a twist if it was the first slain Sub-Zero's, (an offering from Scorpion) which he wore as a trophy of Bi-Han's accomplishments. Maybe this was him showing his homage to the dark side as that's what the skull symbolizes. Or it's steel armour that strengthened his necromancy, hence his energy was going more purple than green as his power intensified.
