I had main Smoke in MK9 but since he is not in this game, I had to get someone else.
I had only touched a few characters and out of everyone: Cryomancer Sub-Zero is becoming my fav.

Sub-Zero all day everyday. Grandmaster variation is my fav, but i see everyone playing Cryomancer.
Mk9 was Sub-Zero also ofc
One of the things that bothered me was the stance sub-zero fought in mk9, but i could layout serious combos with him, in MKX i am still finding it hard to be able to push forward and into a combo string with him, i hate having start a combo without going in first with the forward button.

Sonya was my number 1 in mk9 and so far her covert ops is my main in mkx. Sindel was my number 2 and Mileena 3rd but with Sindy out of action, I am falling in love with Mileena's piercing variation. It's my number 2 and until I get used to the new military stance, she could be coming for the top spot.

I've been able to string lots of long combos with Sub by engaging with an aerial attack. Yes it puts you at risk from anti-air characters (D'Vorah and Wrestler Jax) but if you land it it pays well.
Here's some videos I checked out after hitting practice, they mostly agree that indeed, Cryomancer is the best for combos:

However grandmaster is a lot smarter, the cunning of the variation is good enough to fool new players as well as experienced players. Again all I can recommend is to lead in with air, to make the air easier, you can first juggle them but it will lower the combo potential. Risk is reward, and risk pays victory.
