Why would you take way one of the few distinc features of MK just so it can be like other fighting games? static rosters are awfully boring, expecting the same crap every game and the same sacred-cows permanently screwed into the roster, it kills any sense of suspense and anticipation, fans will get more conceited and expect their favourites everygame which in turn will make it even harder to introduce new characters or make changes to the previous roster, chances of a decent story will drop significantly as well. I honestly hope that never happens.
That's not true though. Soul Calibur has (had tbh) one of the best stories in fighting games and they just changed their roster. Most games manage to find new things for their characters to do instead of just getting rid of them. And honestly roster predictions/reveals have become one of my least favorite aspects of the promotion cycle. It's waiting on baited breath to see if your fav is in instead of knowing they're in and having the excitement come from what they'll look and play like and what they'll be doing.

About Soul Calibur, I've never cared enough to take the story nor its characters seriously, so wont argue with that. Most games don't change their roster because they don't believe in taking risks and aren't interested in telling a good story, it isn't necessary for them, unlike MK. Nobody is getting rid of them, they need to eventually let some characters sit one out because there's a limit to the roster, they simply can't add everyone, it's inevitable.

If you want to know what to expect and if the game experience depends on the presence of your favourites then I understand where you are coming from, but I still think that severely limits the game's possibilities in almost every way.

I count :

1- Ferra
2-Torr
3-Dvorah
4-Cassie
5-Kotal
6-Erron
7-jacqui
8-Kung Jin
9 Takeda

The same number as Deception (Darrius, Dairou, Hotaru, Havik, Ashrah, Kobra, Kira, Onaga, Shujinko)

Only Deadly Alliance had two more characters, and one of them was Mokap. Another one was Blaze without any personal style or move. And Hsu Hao of course.

Mkx is perfectly in line with both mk5 and 6. And no Mokaps or Hsu Haos this time around.

So it might not be the chapter with more new characters in the saga, but for sure is the one that introduces more characters that aren't crappy.

Considering Tobias departure and the creative crisis that hit the team from 2002, I'd say it is a huge accolade.

I agree with other users in the belief that the game has changed a lot from what they originally planned, it suffered lots of modifications along the way and tough cuts had to be made in order to ensure sells. I think the apparently unbalanced and safe roster is the direct product of that process.

Agree completely. Rumour is they halted development on Bo Rai Cho and Ron Tan Cho to focus resources into developing a couple of MK9 returnees and fan favourites instead. Sadly, that makes sense to me. You'll see "faces from later games" doesn't go from plural to singular after 10 months. Fishy.

Hopefully NRS will remedy that with the DLC after fan backlash. It's the only misfire in an otherwise stellar game and line up.
