More comic-book-ish characters for next-gen? Or what other type would u prefer?

posted03/13/2007 07:40 AM (UTC)byQueenSindel(TheBitch)You know how lots of the MK characters between MK1 and UMK3 appeared very much like comic book superheroes or supervillains? Well, I'd personally like to see more distinct, boldy-dressed characters like those for next-gen as oppose to the more realistic-looking characters like Kobra and Bo Rai' Cho.
The charactes that looked comic-book-ish to me were Shao Kahn, the male and female ninjas, Baraka, Sindel, Goro, Kano, the Cyborgs, and a few others. Now, that doesn't mean I don't want characters like Sonya and Johnny Cage to be made for next-gen, I'm just talking about the look of the characters. Sonya and Johnny didn't dress like superheroes but they were still very cool.
Anyway... Here are some pics from the movie of some of the comic-book-ish-dressed characters.
Assassin
Supervillains
Exterminator
So if you don't want characters that dress/appear like MK versions of comic book superheroes or supervillains, what type of characters do u want for next-gen? And please don't say "realistic" looking charactes.

Oh, you must upload those first. And, you don't need the quotations in the formula to make a picture appear:
If you don't have one, get an account at photobucket.com It's pretty easy.
====================
To answer your question though, I think it's a fantastic idea, but I would only prefer it effect some characters... I reaaly do want "realistic" characters back finally, but it doesn't have to be all of them I guess...

Comic book characters was more of John Tobias' thing. He got a lot of inspiration from comic books and movies. The newer character artists are more inspired by real life, as it would seem.
I have nothing against cool looking 'Comic book-ish' characters, but I'm just saying that you shouldn't really expect it. Tobias is gone for good.

I dont see how mk characters were inspired by comic book heroes and villains....
They've always looked like they were inspired by the martial arts, mythologies, and movies...

Kabal's speed is influenced by the Flash. Scorpion is largely inspired by Ghost Rider. Blaze is kind of influenced by the Human Torch.
Anyway, I'm not sure if we should see more comic-bookish characters or not, but I think they need to really delve into interesting archetypes like Bo' Rai Cho or Hotaru.
I'd also like to see more of the mythological influences like in the old days (e.g. Raiden). It doesn't have to just stick to the more Chinese and Japanese mythologies, but we can also things from Indian mythology, Greek mythology, etc.

i love the fact that you are using images from the crappiest movie ever... ha ha!
but no, i really don't see having MK having comic heros/villains in their next game. They should stick with the types of characters they have now. but to make things a lot happier, they should add one... or two, have that second guy be the hero's villain. make things more interesting!

Hey, the movie was overall crappy but some visuals, fighting scenes, and effects were cool. Okay, so I take it you guys can see the pictures now.
Well, anyway, I've always considered the comic-book-ish-looking characters to be the most eminent in MK. They are the characters that are the most memorable to people and it's because of their bold and creative appearances.
So Tobias was the genuis behind the comic characters? Fuck. And now we're never gonna have him back?
Does anybody even know why he left exactly? All I know is that there were some conflicts between the MK team or something.
And also, I'd like to remind you guys that MK has always ran with fantasy looks, settings, and stories. So I think that shows comic-book-ish characters fit into the MK Universe better instead of the realistic ones. Now, that's just my opinion.

He left on good terms. He just wanted to do other games. It would be interesting if he came back, but I'd prefer it if he didn't.

Yea, I can see the pictures Qs(tB)...
======
Take a Look at this....
I know I really sucked at cutting those out....But Yes, they're all real Mk Comic characters. If you didn't know, now ya know.
and does anyone here remember this?
both of those pages were shaped differently, and I didn't wanna touch it other than to put it up...
===============
I find it hard to believe people prefer against it so much....but eh.
My question is: Who wouldn't want to play with Siang?

Kabal was influenced by a character from Star wars (steve berran is a fan of those movies), but I suppose his speed might have been influenced by the Flash.
Scorpion was only partially influenced by Ghost Rider in his MKDA alternate custume....the flaming skull.
I do agree that blaze was a rip off of human torch though. They initially wanted to name Blaze Torch even...

MK has always had a great mix of real and fantasy characters. I say i want MK8's characters to be mixed as well, i want that dark realistic but yet amazing gothic fantasy that DA brought us(but was pushed to the side by deception's cartoony feel). I would really like MK8 to be simelar to DA, but i want a unique mix of new characters for mk8, i want monsters, humans, creatures, cops, vampires, souls, werewolfs, centaurs, minotaurs, wizards ect. I just want an amazingly mix of the darkest realism and the darkest fantasy. Its time for MK to leave the humor behind and return to its true dark roots.

I know. It's mind-boggling.
Hopefully, though, MK8 will feature more characters with superhero/supervillain visual qualities.

Did you click the links in my last post?
And too, aren't those wrestlers in your sig? How much more a medium between comic-book fanatsy and real life character-dress could you get?
Wow.

I think that they still have the comic book-ish look in the current games, it just doesn't slap you in the face. Kenshi, Nitara, Havik and Blaze all seem that way.

Well, it's not so much of the "superhero to villan" thing.....it's more by conceptual design....Not to approve of the "cartoon" or anime qualities, but more of like, making a character like Siang a reality. "Comic-bookish"
How cool would it be to see Sing and Sang (one with a yellow costume, one with a green costume) merge into one radical looking dude with a mohawk?!?
Aheh, he'd look real, like a Mk character is supposed to be, but you'd be able to tell where his concept came from....the comic book.
I'm all for something like that...
In which case...

This is perfectly correct. I didn't notice that about a couple of them actually until I read that.. I think it's a part of the disaproval in that "glossy cartoony" look the last few games had.
I also think that there's a nostagic connection people make in having Renders before the game comes out. Like: "Ooo I wanna play with that one cuz he looks the cool-est"....Y'know, or...whatever, because they have that comic-book feel to them then.
The Raiden Render on the right side of my current sig would be an accurate example of what I should've seen first...instead of that shiny 3D render...
meh..

Yeah, i can see two sides.
At first my reaction was- NO! MK should be dark and moody, but the idea of a playable siang (gosh, that comic came out a LONG time ago...) is great.
I thought MK3 was rubbish with cartoony fatalities like Jax's, Kabals's and whichever cyborg blew up the planet- what trash.
don't want cartoony nonsense like that.... but a playable siang.... kool

Siang doesn't really have a superhero/villain look to me. I suppose his personality seems fitting for a comic book, but not his appearance really. That striking, instantly-memorable quality and charisma isn't there.
I really like how Mileena looks in the picture though. Very comic-superstar qualities to her in that.
