The renewed speculation about the story and final boss thanks to the Quan Chi reveal got me thinking. Some people have mentioned it could be a possibility that the game has multiple bosses when you consider the 25 year timeline and I think that is a good point.

MK2011 managed to cover the entire MK1-3 timeline, re-telling the whole thing in an altered fashion.

What if MKX is actually going to do something similar but with the 3D era games(minus Armageddon)?

With Quan Chi playing a major role in the story as a manipulator with his "schemes fully realized" it could make sense. Quan Chi was instrumental to the plot of MK4 as Shinnok's right hand necromancer. He was also of course instrumental in Deadly Alliance as one of the two main villains. And he was important to the plot of Deception, too because of his possession of the amulet.

That brings me to another character who could be very important to MKX: Kotal Kahn. The game is going to tell of his rise and fall as emperor of Outworld. Outworld had another famous, green-hued emperor who rose and fal from it's throne. If you will remember correctly that same emperor manipulated the 'protagonist' of Deception, Shujinko over a period of decades in order to resurrect himself.

Could MKX replace Shujinko's role with Kotal Kahn? Could the new emperor of Outworld be manipulated by 'Damashi' in a similar fashion to how Shujinko was manipulated?

This could mean that this game's story mode would cover MK4, with Quan Chi and Shinnok(as well as perhaps Goro) as the first round of bosses in the first portion of the game, the second portion could feature the Deadly Alliance(Quan Chi and Shang Tsung) and Kotal Kahn as bosses and then the final part of the story could be a reimagining of Deception, with the resurrected Onaga as the final boss of the game.

Thoughts? Is this theory crazy and/or stupid, too predictable etc.? Or could it work?

It's kind of funny if you think about it. Quan Chi spends the entire storyline manipulating others...only for it to turn out that he was being manipulated by Onaga all along. The word 'deception' would certainly fit.

I sincerely hope not.

I want a new direction. New storyline, new events, and new interactions. I'm fine with MK4 being briefly covered in the first part of the story, but I think after that it should be taken in a completely new direction.

I liked Deadly Alliance and Deception, but I have no interest in seeing the Dragon King ever again, nor do I want it taken down that path towards Blaze and Armageddon etc. Deadly Alliance is as far as I could see myself wanting to go, but I'd prefer MK4 and then somewhere new.

Redoing MK1-3 20 years later, in a far updated generation, was a cool feeling. It was a nice way to reboot the series. But going forward, I don't need to see the 3D games all retold as well. It'll likely be another 4 years until a new MK after MKX, I don't want to wait that long for unexplored territory. I also don't care to see a majority of the characters introduced in those games either. But that's just me.

Unlikely.

And I hope it won't be. I want something new. MK9 was retreading the same ground and with MKX I want something completely fresh. MKDA is my favorite game, but if I want to experince it, I play MKDA.

When I play MKX I want to experince MKX, and not remake of something-something.

I couldn't agree more. Lets do MK4 then after that a new direction.

Good points, guys. It was just a thought. The whole thing about the final/main boss being a returning character just leads one to speculate and this was an idea that I came up.

It's unlikely, but I would love to see Onaga return in the future as a boss character (perhaps MK11).

I would think that MK4 would be the last remnants of any similar storylines from the previous timeline, and afterwards it'll move towards the future with many new characters (such as some already revealed) and thus new directions. Still, the "deadly alliance" idea was a powerful image and to evoke a similar alliance perhaps with new characters depending who they are would be great.

If MKX revolved around MK4, DA and D, then we wouldn't be getting all these new characters...right?

So it's not happening.

I could see the first part of the story being somewhat like MK4 with Shinnok's invasion, but that's where I think the similarity would end. That's what I initially thought anyway, and then a kamidogu was mentioned in one of the comic book teasers.

Onaga may very well return. I recall Shujinko's narration in the Deception intro: "But it is said that there is only one true ruler of Outworld..." And with Outworld embroiled in a civil war over who will succeed Shao Kahn as emperor/empress, this could be setting the stage. And who even knows if Onaga's ascension would be the end of the story (assuming it does happen).

Loosely and simply, I could see the plot being Shinnok's invasion -----> Unknown new stuff -----> Dragon King's Resurrection (----> maybe even something else!).

I'd be shocked if they revisited the Deadly Alliance arc, considering what happened to Shang Tsung in MK9. They kind of left the door open for him to return (in a way), but that's where I think it'll be all new. Just my 2 cents.

Hasn't Boon said in a few interviews that this will be pretty much a new story?

I'm not saying he's in, but if Taven should be in, I can certainly see Blaze showing up at some point in the story.

We all remember that Liu died at the start of MKDA, by having his neck snapped. In MK9, Kung Lao had the same treatment. They took a piece from MKDA and implemented in MK9, where in MK 1-3 Liu never died.

So who knows, there could be a lot of major twists within the span of 25 years.

More than likely Onaga will be back no matter what. I understand many do not want to see him again but, he was nearly the vessel of the One Being if he had fused the Kamidogu together. I believe he's a very important figure to the story.

In all honesty the deadly alliance is gone already as it is. MK4 could be one of the plots throughout the story. Mortal Kombat Deception may not even happen either. Due, to the implications of Kotal Kahn and his "successor" whom ever that maybe.
