MKX and that Classic MK Feeling

This ain't a bitching thread, not about the roster, story, or any of that.

In fact I think MKX looks great technically, story wise, new character wise, gameplay wise, etc. Everything looks awesome. The only thing is, I feel like the game is lacking that kind of cheesy kung-fu aesthetic that the older games had. Looking back it seems like they all had that except MK vs DC and so far I'm not getting it from this either. Some of the games had it more than others but it was fairly present throughout the series.

It might be too early to say that and I love the series so it's not like I'm trying to find stuff to whine about, but I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same, or felt we'll see more of that later.

I don't feel the kung-fu aesthetic since Mk2, really.
It feels like they changed the atmosphere from mk3-4, from there on it turned into a darkish kind of game for me, FOR ME, my opinion.
Yet, I'm in love with mkx atmosphere and the kind of game we're receiving

I know what you mean. For me, the more asian inspired MK is, the better. However I think we're going to see much more of that stuff moving forward. So fingers crossed.

They're definitely taking a more futuristic approach, not just in terms of story elements, but in presentation. I think there will be characters who will bring a touch of that old Eastern Kung-Fu feel to the table, but this new angle of Action Sci-Fi Vs. Fantasy in 2015 will resonate a hell of a lot more with today's audience than if they went Full Cheese Wheel.

Yeah I like the asian inspired stuff. It doesn't have to be overwhelmingly present obviously, but I feel like a nice amount of it was in each game until now. MK3/UMK3 was mostly modern styled city areas but a few remixes of The Courtyard and some Outworld stuff helped there. MK4, Deadly Alliance, Deception had a nice amount of it. Armageddon had a bit less but still I could see it.

For MKX I'm not feeling it much at all, even with the Lin Kuei stage and ruined city. I think it might be the music affecting that since the music in this game feels a bit more generic? Maybe that's the problem of using realistic sounding instruments on tracks instead of sound chips though. I don't think the presence of Special Forces characters is making it feel less MK than some people though. It does sorta feel like they're taking it a bit more seriously. I'll wait until the game comes out but if it takes itself too seriously for MK it might wind up being unintentionally weird

Earlier in the week I was thinking about how MKX seems to be shifting somewhat westward in their cultural focus, what with cowboy Erron Black, Aztec-ish deity Kotal, and a buttload of American Special Forces thrown in for good measure.

I don't have a problem with any of these, but I would like to see more nods to MK's wuxia/1970s Hong Kong action flick origins. It would be nice.

I feel like we lost that with MKII, TBQH, and only got a little bit of it back with Deadly Alliance. I definitely hear you, though.

Exactly what i was thinking. I feel like they did this to bring more balance in the roster, but instead shifted the balance.

As a weaboo I have to concur with you guys about missing old school MK's kung fu flick atmosphere. tongue

Seriously though, I miss it.

And I would disagree that it has been gone ever since after MKII. It did kind of go away during MK3, but it came back in MK4, DA and Deception. DA and Deception especially had that mystical kung flu flick type vibe back.

This game seems very Special Forces-centric, so I expect a more High-tech, military feel, like some of the most popular games during the last gen. Coincidence?

No, I'm sure it was very much on purpose and calculated, as that kind of thing has been very popular in gaming over the past decade or so now. I'm not the biggest fan of it necessarily but story mode looks awesome anyway so I'm not gonna complain.

I love the direction MKX is going in. MK9 was so corny and watered down story mode-wise. the characters didn't curse and even when people died it had a PG-13 vibe.
MKX it looks like theyre bringing back the grittiness with lots of gore kind of like MK4. there will probably be lots of betrayal and unexpected shady stuff going on throughout the storyline. i love it. its rated M for mature so they might as well go all out.

oh and fight scenes are SO much better than MK9. man i cant wait to pick this game up.

Well... not to argue cause I do get a feel for what you are saying... however.. we have more Asian based characters in this game than really any other MK..

Kung Lao
Kung Jin
Kenshi
Takashi
Human form Scorpion
Even Sub-Zero is looking more Asian in this than he has in a long time.
and possibly Liu Kang.

I thought they were doing a decent job, while incorporating some western influences, also bringing back a bit of the Asian mysticism that MK started with.

but then again, we have seen 7 minutes of 1 chapter and just gameplay... So there could be much more Asian influence than what we have seen, which will make the game seem closer to the original feel, or it can go the opposite way... Its really too early to tell.

But I DO get what you mean.

I think it's just all the Special Forces stuff they're focusing on now. Once the lore of MK gets going in the story I'm sure that will change.

I kind of get what you are saying, that's why I have been hoping we would get some sort of temple or kung fooey like stage soon lol
the special forces stuff has always taken away from the mk feel of the games and unfortunately it seems to be a bigger focus this time in story and with characters. Kotal Khans side of the story should be pretty interesting and hopefully has a more outworld/mk feel to it.

The focus on the Special Forces has only been in the story trailer because it also served as an introduction to the new team. If there's as many chapters as the last time they won't hog all the story. Let's not forget about Sub-Zero, Raiden and Kung Lao. But the main force defending earthrealm now IS the Special Forces so they're bound to be important.

What about Earthrealm's music from Deception's Konquest? I thoroughly enjoyed that one.

In the overall games though, I agree. I tried to explain this to a friend the other day, but just couldn't find the right words. It's like it's become too...idk, Americanized? Needs more of those Guzheng feels.

Konquest had the best themes ever. Got Earthrealm, Edenia, Outworld, and Netherealm themes on iTunes.

I like that the game is evolving, though. Though I also miss that classic MK feeling, this new direction feels fresh.

Hell yeah it did...well...from the 3D era. But might just be nostalgia taking over. It was the last to come, unfortunately. The only track or theme from Armageddon that jumped out at me was The Bell Tower's (dat intro). Seriously...that's it.

For MK9, I just always hit select (is it select? o.O) for the klassic tune.

Classic soundtracks on MK9 FOR DAYS.

Every match I played online I selected the arenas that had the classic MK soundtracks. I always felt it pumped me more and gave me an advantage in the match XD.
Deception and Armageddon's Konquest modes actually had some great themes here and there.

Armageddon's Botan Jungle always stuck out to me. Man, this game wasn't as bad as people said. It was at the worst a good party game. Sure it lacked depth, but it had some cool shit here and there.

Technically Sub-Zero used to only be partially Chinese. His mother was American so he could've been whatever else, that was used to explain his looks when John Turk was playing him. Him being full Chinese in the reboot is cool but one of the reasons I joke about it being an alt universe.

I still don't get why double-posting is such a big deal.

Someone explain.
Sometimes it looks like you're trying to bump a thread out of impatience, adds to clutter, etc. Just don't look that good. Edit: Like quoting the post just above yours damnit I keep doing that
