I think the story should be continued 10 years or more after Armageddon, and the realms are in crisis. I pumped this idea out of my head, but I picked the returning characters I felt were still useful to the story...
After the events of Armageddon, Taven replaces Raiden as the Protector of Earthrealm and forms an alliance with the Special Forces, the Edenians, the Lin Kuei, and the White Lotus Society. When many of Earth’s heroes are killed in Armageddon, Taven is responsible for finding new warriors to compete in the next Mortal Kombat and defeat his brother Daegon, who is building an army in Outworld.
In Outworld, Daegon devises a similar plan, recruiting new warriors from the remains of the Red Dragon, the Tekunin, and what’s left of the various species of Outworld, still loyal to the cause of destroying Earthrealm.
Meanwhile, Quan-Chi has returned to the Netherrealm after he is killed in Armageddon. He has managed to regain his human form and created the Brotherhood of Shadow, becoming the new ruler of the Netherrealm and gaining ultimate power. Quan-Chi wants to destroy the realms so the Netherrealm will be filled with endless souls for him to control...

Noob: after his memories from his past life are restored by Quan-Chi, the shadow assassin vows to kill Scorpion
Sektor: has upgraded himself and the Tekunin into the perfect killing machines, more powerful than ever now

A new Oni created in human (female) form by Quan-Chi
A new Saurian: the Red Dragon used Reptile’s body to clone and recreate these vicious, lizard-like assassins to complete an experiment they created prior to Armageddon
Just my idea.. I like the idea of replacing Sub-Zero by his son, if the MK team goes with all new characters

Gemini should be a sexy African American girl. A new female Oni is good too. The New Shokan should be a female because there are already 2 male Shokans and this Shokan. There should also be a new female centaur as well a new male vampire character who is from Nitara's realm. We need more centaurs and vampires. A female cyborg will be great as a companion of Sektor.
Who I'd definitely want to return is Jade and Mileena as secret characters. Kitana thought Jade was dead but was really recovered by a holy man who told her to call him Brother, was also very specialized in Bojutsu. Not only that but he read a bad future for Edenia. He told her that he needed to train her for a new threat that is about to come up and that Kitana will need her help to save all the realms. So he trained her for a couple of years until he and Jade were ambushed by Tarkatans and a mysterious woman in a hood. The woman said, "You probably don't remember me now do you Jade?"
Jade: Tanya?
The mystery lady took off her claok and to Jade's surprise, it was Mileena.
Jade: Mileena!
Mileena: Oh yes my dear. You remember me.
Mileena was also thought to be dead but she went hiding somewhere in Outworld just to plan a new threat to conquer all realms and to take control of the realms by herself with her own army of Tarkatans.
Mileena: Soon, all the realms will be mine.
Jade: Never!
Jade and Brother faught hard against the gang of Tarkatans but there were only two of them and 15 of the creatures including Mileena. Brother got impaled at the chest and Jade was badly beaten up by Mileena. Jade wanted to go to Brother but he told her to find a way to escape and help Kitana. So before she left, she gave Mileena one powerful smack with the Bo and knocked out all the other Tarkatans out of her way so she can make her escape. As Jade fled, Mileena and her warriors feasted on the holy man.
Jade: I must help Kitana. (She wipes tears off her eyes and heads to Edenia.) Hopefully I'm not too late.
To Unlock Jade and Mileena, beat them in Story Mode/Arcade Mode.
You guys can add into that if you want.
