Male ninja's specifically, the female ninja's fall in the "other" category for this thread.

I am a big ninja mk fan, I dont try and hide it. I love the costume designs and abilities. But i was just thinking about why I like them so much? what is the real reason? Then I thought this:

Anyone else notice that besides the male ninja's every character's design/costumes are pretty stagnant. I mean, no one changes their look at ALL. With every new game you can count on every male ninja getting a make over.

If other characters evolved and changed as frequently as the male ninja's, I might become more fond of them. It seems as though other characters are stuck in a mold because they were created in originality and the male ninjas were palette swaps with no originality besides their abilities. So therefore each installment of MK is trying to separate the male ninjas further apart and as a result we get new updated looks.

I hope with mkx and the emphasis on this being a completely NEW mortal Kombat (emphasis is on NEW characters, NEW story.. etc.) we see the returning members of the cast to get NEW exciting looks. (Even though I can almost guarantee that when Raiden is shown he will be sporting the asian rice hat and blue satchel with white kata suit..) Here's to hoping for a fresh take..

Was Zombie Liu not good enough for you? Lol.

Reiko did also change a lot from MK4 to MKarmageddon.

Same with Fujin, Tanya and Kai. Geez Jax even gained steel arms in MK3, talking about change.

But many, MANY characters like Havik and Hotaru and others like that, they only appeared in 1 game, and just kept their old models during Armageddon.

I'm sure that Tanya, Havik, Fujin and all others look very different in 2D, they will shift extremely.

Raiden had his dark look btw, which was pretty different.

It's better to have the "ninja" characters to get more work on with their appearance than anyone else, mainly because we've all known them as nothing but the palette swappers. They should get a bit more work on just to get them away from the same look they've had for several games.

But everyone has had a pretty good change from their earlier looks, I mean look at Mileena. Who would have thought that when Mortal Kombat 3 came out, she'd be more sexualized in the future? I can assume not that many people would have thought that.

And if any other recurring character appears in this game, I'm going to assume they'll have a newer look.

I consider dark raiden a separate character from raiden as well as zombie lui and normal lui. Their character was ultimately changed due to the narrative of the story. Raiden essentially died and lui died. You don't see me saying subzero has changed his look a lot because he turned all black, No, noob saibot became a new character just like dark raiden and zombie lui.

Tanya added a side loin clothe and let her ponytail down. Thats not a major change that i am talking about.

Once jax got his metal arms (which only happened because thats how the story worked out) he hasn't changed.

Reiko did change but only because he was a palette swap ninja without a mask and needed to have an original look. So.. you added to my point.

My ultimate point is that I really want to see some big changes in costume design for returning characters. Anyone else feel the same?

Well the female ninja's and cyber ninja's changed.

And I think Tanya changed a lot, first she looked kinda kind-hearted and boring, then she was like this evil chick with awesome style and clothes on.

Very big change for me.

I don't see a major change in Reiko's garb. They just added details(spikes) to it really.

The cyber ninja's I suppose changed after their palette swap days, yes. Sektor and Cyrax both look unique compared to each other. But they have not changed much following the end of the palette swap days.

Female ninja's as well got some cosmetic changes after the palette swap days and then remained stagnant, And their changes were mostly small pieces of fabric scantily adorned in slightly different ways.

Does anyone else want big changes to come? or better graphics on the same old designs?

Why should they have drastic change? They should have some distinguishing features to tell who is who without keeping them looking like palette swaps, but nothing that makes it difficult for people to recognize who is who.

Sonya and Kano the old veteran characters have had TONS of revamps to their cosumes. I think it has more to do with how long someone has been in the storyline and how many appearances they got. Quan Chi too has had a few distinct looks, not to mention young-again old-again young-again Shang Tsung.

It just makes sense that the "ninjas" got overhauled too, being included from the very beginning.

Agreed. There definitely needs to be that little part of each character that makes them who they are. I just hope we see some cool original costumes for older characters. And i may be appeased by the alternate costumes where the developers have more leeway to push the boundaries.

Baraka had 4 different attire looks since MK2. My favorite is his MK9 Alt.

I agree with the post. LiuKang and Raiden are probably the most unchanged. Which is y I thought Raiden's MK5 alt was so freakin awesome! Get rid of that hat already. LiuKang should invest in some armored boots, those slippers aren't very Kombat efficient. LoL

Jax remained unchanged til MKvsDC, which was his best look IMO. The QuanChi Koncept for MKvsDC was the same look for every game except MK4 (if I remember correctly)

I said this in a few different posts already, I think MKX should have a Kustomize Option. Just something simple and easy like Unmasking a ninja, removing Raiden's hat, or putting a shirt on Jax and LiuKang. The 2 different renders of Cassie's hair gives me hope NRS has already thought of this.

Yeah, it's rather ironic that the ninja characters catch slack almost nonstop to this day for having been palette swaps while Liu Kang has looked the exact same for 21 years.

I agree with ORION about Raiden. He practically had the same attire since the start. His MKDA alt was a fresh change.

I disagree with this. The male ninjas changed and evolved so much because they had to. They all looked the same and the team had to differentiate them eventually. Characters like Raiden, Cage, etc were memorable enough so big changes in their look weren't really needed. Yet their oufits were updated just enough in each game so that we didn't get the same thing over and over.
Yes the male ninjas have gotten nice updates but if you think about it they all still wear masks and loincloths. Their looks are generally similar, it's just that each one has a few details that fit their personality. Just like the cyborgs and the female ninjas. Rain has some golden armor to fit his "prince" persona, scorpion has the bug details, Smoke has the typical MK ninja look with the Smokey hair, etc. Just like Mileena got noticeable updates from her original MK2 swimsuit but sluttier to fit her seductive persona, Jade got a more "tribal" look since MKD, etc.
Most characters have evolved from their original look. You can't deny that just because you're a fan of the ninjas. Plus there's no reason to compare them. If you ask me, Quan Chi us the only character that desperately needs a new outfit.

For all characters, the first costume is usually kept as just an updated version of their most classic look, and that is completely fine, so you can recognize characters easily. There are a few characters who haven't been that consistent, Sonya comes to mind, her looks in MK3, MK4, MKDA, MKvsDC and MK9 are all pretty different from each other. Most characters don't change as much, but a lot usually have an alternate costume where the inovation is, like NIghtwolf, Sindel, Sheeva, in MK9, or Raiden and Kung Lao in MKDA.

I don't think I should have been so polarizing in my original post. I want to steer people towards a discussion on costumes rather than a ninja flame thread.

I had originally started thinking about reptile (my favorite character) and if he was to be included in the game how he would look, because he, out of any character, changes the most from title to title. And then I started thinking about my other favorite character's and what they would look like (Ermac, Smoke, Noob); and I am really excited to see (hopefully some) of these new renditions.

Then I started thinking about Raiden (because of the cryptic reveal message) And I am pretty sure I know exactly how he is going to look if he is revealed saturday. I think I can say that about most characters... And then this thread was born.

Anyone else excited to see how there favorite character is going to look? Does anyone want a drastic change?

I like how they're taking the ninjas in different directions costume wise. The design changes will be even more prevalent now thanks to the different cloth textures they're using. It might be subtle, but it's the little things that matter.

I will agree that some characters have become a little stale in the costume department (I'm looking at you, Raiden!), but that doesn't mean that there won't be a revamp for this game. I, for one, would like to see Raiden in more god-like combat attire. Some type of armor wouldn't hurt.

Raiden's best look by far is his MKDA look as it really stood out from his other appearances and fit his character very well. I really hope to see something very similar for him in MKX

See that would be awesome. I have hopes that mkx will bring about design changes for characters we are used to seeing.

I have said this in another thread.. I can't wait til tomorrow because more than likely it will be a returning character; and we will get to see even further the direction of the character design in mkx. So far all we have is scorp and sub to base our opinions on. I cant wait!

Agreed. it will be subtle but will give such a deeper, rich, costume design. We can see a huge difference already between mkx and mk9. In mk9 every character model looked smooth and of the same material. In mkx we see scorpions vest looks like a sewn clothe material and his mask looks hard.

D'Vorah's skin is what stands out most to me. Her skin looks like a bugs exoskeleton and compared to other characters skin looks completely different.
