With the recent revelation that Jax has either a niece or a daughter, which means she is probably going to be in MKX as well, it got me to thinking about descendants in MKX.
How many do you think there will be?
So far we have...
- Cassie Cage*, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya
- Takeda, the son of Kenshi and a Thai woman
- Kung Jin, younger cousin of Kung Lao
- Jacqui Briggs, either the niece or daughter of Jax
That is 4. I also suspect that Ron Tan'Cho is related to Bo somehow, most likely a cousin. I think he could be Bo's evil cousin, essentially, a crime boss from Outworld. Just a theory. Why else give a new character such a similar name to an already existing character, especially one who is probably also in this game?
I also have an idea for another descendant character. If Liu is alive at the beginning of MKX, and Kitana is resurrected during the Netherrealm War could Kitana side with a bitter, cynical Liu and they have a child together? One who would be half Earthrealmer and half Outworlder/Edenian? They could have a son who could act as a rival to Kung Jin. I think that would be really interesting.
So how many do you think there will be total? I'm guessing there will be 4-6, basically half the new characters.
* - Cassie is the only one confirmed as playable in MKX thus far.

Nah...9 ba-jillion.
Seriously though, how many?
Seems like people around here generally think the less the better. It seems the idea of descendants in the game has still not grown very much in popularity around here, even though people generally like Cassie.
Whatever the number of new characters, I think descendants will make up half of them.

There's 4 so far (if Kung Jin is real) and I hope it stays that way. What could be a unique novelty can be overdone and become tacky.

Two would be comfortable, and three would be pushing it. At least in MKX. If they want to do more further down the line then sure, I'm all for it. But don't throw 7 of them at me in one game. Spread it out.

See, my thinking is the opposite. I would find it tiring if new ones are introduced in game after game. I'd rather introduce an entire group in one game, and then let them develop without introducing any more for a few games.

I am actually fairly sure it is 5. Ron Tan'Cho has got to be related to Bo somehow. Why give a new character such a similar name if he's not related to Bo?

If they are unique and there own person it won't matter, but if they are copy cats then its a bad idea, but i dont want them there to replace people, i think that is tacky and will be a failed experiment
Why does Liu even need a child?
What about his brother? You know, despite the original timeline stated that he's dead, this new timeline has yet to even bother mentioning anything about his brother.
Let Liu stay dead and bring his brother.
I honestly do not mind how many descendants we get. If they are aiming to make a "new" generation for Mortal Kombat after this game, I say I'll welcome any new descendant with open arms.

I think this is why people still haven't warmed up to the idea of descendants. The assumption is, all or most of them will be like knock-off's of or version 2.0 of the characters they are descendants of, and thus will feel way too redundant/unoriginal.
If that is the case then I agree, the less the better.
Hopefully if there are multiple descendants playable in MKX, they make them into characters that have their own merit other than just being a descendant.

Well, I guess you could have Liu's brother.
Honestly the main reason I am suggesting a son of Liu and Kitana is because he would be such a perfect rival for Kung Jin. That's the main and only reason, really.

The earth warriors die faster than everyone else so it makes sense why it's mostly the heroes. Kenshi, Sonya, jax. The others have offspring obviously but 25 years is a long time for us lol. For Bo or kitana? Not so much. I can see a few enemies of the new generation, there has to be. That's why I think fox is in.

It's most likely around this site, but who is Kung Jin again?

Pretty much this.
However, I would be fine with just four in this game. Cassie along with Jacqui, Takeda and Kung Jin. I would also accept Chan (Chow) Kang with open arms.

He is in the new Web series and a cousin/relative of Kung Lao.FerraTorr •01/24/2015 01:49 AM (UTC) •

He is Kung Lao's younger cousin who immigrated to America after the family fell on hard times immediately following Kung Lao's death. There he became a street thief but after an encounter with Raiden he becomes involved in Mortal Kombat. Honestly, his story sounds a LOT like Liu Kang's in the Mortal Kombat movie but I don't mind at all. It's a good story, actually.
I guess he is also Liu's cousin seeing as Liu and Kung Lao are cousins. I don't think he is Liu's brother though because if he was it seems like that would be more important than him being Kung Lao's cousin.

Actually I was hoping for Kung Lao and Kung Jin to side with Raiden against Liu Kang. Maybe Liu and Kitana's kid would be brainwashed to hate Raiden & company as weak and not worthy as heroes etc. but comes to see the truth, and actually ends up befriending Kung Jin by the end of story mode.
Something like that.
I wouldn't want them to just be mindless rivals for the hell of it. I wasn't really suggesting a friendly rivalry type deal either though. Meh. Just an idea.

3 or 4 descendants is redundant but (at least/about) twice as many rainbow ninjas isn't. tut tut tut.

Four or five?
Cassie Cage- Daughter of Sonya & Johnny.
Jacqui (Jacqui Briggs)- Likely to turn out to be the daughter of Jax. I'm sure Cassie was calling Jax her "uncle", not saying he was Jacqui's.
Kung Jin- Youngest cousin of Kung Lao.
Ron Tan' Cho- if he is related to Bo'Rai Cho in any way.
Takeda- Son of Kenshi.
Personally I'd be fine with more, but eight at most & only if they weren't close to being exact clones of other characters. But this is just speculation because for all we know even Salazar could be playable and be related to another character in some way.
In a way though I feel that introducing all these new characters whether descendants of older ones or not, is redundant if they're not playable. Without fans getting hands-on time with them how are they supposed to get the connection with them that other characters have gotten over the years?

Yeah I'm worried that there will be too many descendants in this game
Also hoping that the one black character doesn't come from Jax. There's other black families besides his.

How many is "too many" and why do you feel they could be a detriment to the game?

Like someone said, 3 is pushing it, 4 is too many.
It's like the creative team got bored thinking up new characters and decided that most new characters should be old ones, but different.
Cassie is a good addition
Takeda is a good addition
This new Briggs character? I think it's pushing it.
It could potentially go down the path of boring again like...just about every character from MK5-7 that starts with a D.
I mean, I know that we don't know if Jax's descendant is in the game or not or what her abilities will be, but can you think of a good fatality for her? I fear that itll tread down the "boring and bland" path pretty quick.
